Tuesday December 30, 2008

We had no snow today. In fact the sun was shining most of the day. Last night Nancy and I discussed whether or not we should go to Jimmy Kirkwood's funeral. We had been to the funeral home and met all the Kirkwood.

As I was finishing running at the MAC, Nancy said she wanted to go to the funeral. She said that acquaintances go to visitation but friends go to the funeral. As always Nancy was right.

My Uncle Jim Hughes always said my Grandfather Hughes, a very devout Methodist, would go to funerals and comment after the service that it was a good funeral. As Uncle Jim explained Grandfather thought that if the service was well run and a lot of people were in attendance that the deceased was being sent off the way the Lord intended.

Jimmy's service was held at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, a beautiful church. The service was splendid and the church was packed. A lunch was served after the service. Jack and Rita, Jimmy's parents, looked as if they had reached closure and that Jimmy was in God's hands. My Grandfather Hughes would say that this was a good funeral.

We had lunch with Ruth Molenaar. Heidi and Jennifer were at the funeral. We also talked with the Kirkwood children.

Nancy and I stopped at Blockbusters on our way home and picked up several movies for over the holiday. We intend to stay home New Year's Eve.

Around 3 PM JD and I had a beer and talked about some career choices for JD. It makes me feel good when ex-employees want my opinion.

It was a busy day. It started to snow about an hour ago. I had better get to bed so I will be ready for shovelling tomorrow. I got my 30 in.

Monday December 29, 2008

It froze last night. But no snow, so no shovelling. Judging from the crowd at the MAC a lot of people are taking the week off.

The Detroit Free Press today blasted the Detroit Lions. 0-16 is nothing to write home about. The dismal record is because of the Bobby Layne curse. The good news for Detroit is that SPS bought a Saturn.

This afternoon Nancy and I went to the funeral home to pay our condolences to the Kirkwood family. The funeral home was jammed. Nancy and I talked to all the family members. They are all still in shock. It is so sad.

I checked by facebook page and only my sister wants to be my friend. I am looking for a current picture to post on facebook. I got my 30 in today, did you?

Sunday December 28, 2008

I forgot to mentioned that Tasha set up a facebook account for me. I put in Alpena High School in my profile. None of my classmates have a facebook account.

This morning Nancy and I head for the MAC for our Sunday swim. I swam 30 laps using only the crawl. It took me 37 minutes to go 1500 yards. This is my best time for this distance. It is only the first time I used the crawl exclusively for this distance.

When we got home at 0930 Tasha was ready to head for Cleveland. She took some cookies, ham and other Christmas goodies. Petunia stuck with Tasha like glue. No way she was staying in GR.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I took my nap and then Nancy and I headed for Kohl's. We found nothing.

We got a piece of bad new today. Jimmy Kirkwood passed away. He was only 40 and played with both Tasha, Sasha and SPS when they lived across the street. It has to be a tragic blow to his parents.

I watched a portion of the Lions game today. They set a record of 16 losses in a season. I might have mentioned earlier that I like the new chemicals used by the MAC in their pool. Now it appears as if my nose has rebelled against the chemicals. I am plugged up and cannot breathe. The same happened after my Wednesday swim. I will have to start wearing my swim mask that covers my nose.

Tonight we will finish the Christmas ham and bean soup. It will be an early evening. Nancy and I have a busy week ahead. Remember busy is a relative term for retired folks.

Saturday December 27, 2008

I started the day with a 3 mile run at the MAC. It started to rain last night and the rain continued all day. The rain on the snow has created a very foggy condition.

Tasha and I head for cousin Peg's in Rosebush at 0930. Even though it is 20 miles further we are taking the freeway to Rosebush. The fog was bad from GR to Lansing and from Alma to Rosebush. The Lansing to Alma portion of the trip was ok. Tasha and I did not talk for the first 60 miles because we were concentrating on the road. After the fog lifted we relaxed and even talked. Our conversation centered on the stupidity of driver. Visibility was less than a 50 feet and yet cars passed us going 70 mph. Many cars did not have their lights on. Despite the bad conditions we did not see any accidents until we got off the freeway at Rosebush. There was a bad accident on the off ramp.

Cousin Peg was glad to see Tasha. Tasha and Peg got caught up and then we headed for lunch at the Diner. The Diner is located on Mission Road about 4 miles from Pegs. Peg and I had breakfast and Tasha had a burger.

The fog was bad from Rosebush to Alma but the rest of the trip home was clear. Almost all the snow is gone. We had ham sandwiches for dinner. The evening was spent reading and watching TV. I did get my 30 minutes with two 1 mile walks.

Friday December 26, 2008

We had freezing rain last night. I had to salt the drive early this morning. After my morning routine, Tasha and I walked to the Kava House for coffee. We had a ham sandwich for lunch. The ham was left over from the Christmas meal.

This afternoon I had to put the back seat in the Aztek. We need the additional seats when we go out to lunch with cousin Peg on Saturday. I also got the car washed (inside and out).

This evening Nancy, Tasha and I had dinner at the Belt Line Bar. Tasha and I had the wet burrito. The place was jammed. What bad economy?

Tasha helped me set up a facebook page. We noted that no one from my high school class is on facebook. No computers up north?

It will not get below freezing this evening. Tomorrow is will get to 50. Most of the ice on the roads should be gone by tomorrow night. I got my 30 in did you?

Thursday December 25, 2008

Merry Christmas everyone! We had a white Christmas. You know everyone in your home is above 30 when everyone sleeps in on Christmas morning. I slept in to 0800. Nancy, Tasha and I opened presents around 0900. It was a great Christmas. I got several gift cards, a cool vest, swimming caps, bedroom slippers and a book on construction of the Panama Canal. I also got a cool electronic gps/watch/heart rate monitor/etc from Sasha and the Scott Team. It is a great tool for biking, kayaking, and walking. Tasha printed out my blogs and put them in a really clever notebook. Thanks everyone.

Nancy made her world famous poached eggs. It was so good and filling I had to take a nap. After the nap I snacked, played with my GPS, snacked, read my blogs, snacked, and finally took a walk.

We had ham for dinner. The dinner also included gourmet potatoes and green beans. Christmas cookies were dessert.

Nancy and I have had 43 Christmas days together. Each one was special. We have never been separated. I have only spent 2 Christmas days away from my family. The first was 1961 on Midway Island and the second was 1963 in Vietnam.

I remember 1 Christmas my Dad spent hours making a scale model of a dragline crane. The crane was on wheels, the boom could be lowered and the bucket could be opened and closed. My Dad was crushed, I seldom played with the crane. The next year I got a small radio. I listened to that radio every night. On cold winter nights I looked forward to going bed and listening to my favorite radio show.

The weather man says that we have had less than 8 hours of sunshine this month. For comparison we had 8 hours of sunshine after 12 noon on the fourth of July. Just remember the days are getting longer and the sun is still in the sky.

Nancy and I want to wish every one a very Merry Christmas.

Wednesday December 24, 2008

Christmas Eve 08. Our crack snow shovelling team starts at 0630. The temperature is at the freezing mark so the snow is heavy. We got about 3" over night. We finish a little after 7 and head to the MAC so I can get in the pool before the seniors' water aerobics class. I swam 1100 yards.

I forgot to put my eye in so I head home and pop in the contact. I hurry back to the MAC to pick up Nancy. We have breakfast at the Omelet Shop. Tasha call and tell us her sump pump is not working right. I recommend that she call a plumber. I also head to Home Depot to see what a sump pump costs and how to install one. They are inexpensive and quite simple in their operation. I call Tasha and she says the problem is solved and she is on her way to GR.

At home I dug out some old family material that HC had and was surprised to find a family tree for the Hughes. Did you know the Hughes were from Inch, Ireland? Grandfather Hughes was born in Treadwell, Ont. His father was married to a Darlington as was our great-great-great grandfather. Intermarriage?

I also found material on the Sanborns. My paternal grandmother was a Sanborn. I have some good news for Sasha, I have found a family member who was in the Continental Army.

Tasha got to GR about 6:30. She brought petunia. We had a great dinner of lasinga (sp?). We watched some TV and then headed for bed so we will be bright eyed for Christmas. We could not get the close-caption to work on our HD TV. Any ideas?

Tuesday December 23, 2008

Yes folks the great snow shovelling team of Bob and Nancy cleaned the drive and walks in record time. We have had plenty of practise.

After the MAC I headed for the Kava House. We have had so much snow that the snow banks along the side of the road has narrowed the road width. Parking is difficult and it is impossible to get on the sidewalk because of the deep banks.

After lunch I again shovelled the walk. It took over a hour. I was so cold that I turned my electric blankee on and jumped in. It took 30 minutes to warm up.

I talked with cousin Peg today and I told her that Tasha will come over and visit this Saturday, weather permitting. She said that this will make her Christmas.

I am trying to get my XM radio on line. It cuts in and out. I called their tech center and had difficulty understanding the support person. I have the tunes but they cut in and out. I will put this on my list for Tasha to figure out. Tasha will also help me with my facebook.

Tonight Nancy and I were going to Russ's for soup and burgers. However, the weather is so bad Nancy decided to defrost some pea soup and burgers. Sounds great. I got my 30 minutes did you?

Monday, December 22, 2008

Monday December 22, 2008

Guess what Nancy and Bob did first thing this morning? You guessed it, we shovelled snow. About 1" fell overnight. As a result of the shovelling I was about 40 minutes behind schedule. Can a retired person have a schedule? Any way I got back home about noon. Nancy and I headed to the mall to finish Christmas shopping and to get a universal remote for a TV. We were unsuccessful. I did get a slice of pizza at the food court. The mall was jammed. I think most people want to get every thing done before tonight's snow storm. Yes we have another storm coming.

I stopped by the office to pay my fee for the football bowl pool. I also got a Christmas gift from the office. Of course I spent a lot of time talking sports with the guys.

When I got home I shovelled and went on a short walk. I am now in my nice warm office and will not leave the house. The temperature did not get above 20 today.

Sunday December 21, 2008

Happy Solstice. Remember the days are getting longer so spring can't be that far away. The great snow shovelling team of Bob and Nancy had to shovel 5" of snow this morning before heading to the MAC. It might sound weird swimming when the temp is in single digits. Actually the warm water felt good.

After the MAC we did our weekly shopping at Meijers. Despite all the snow and heavy drifting the store was full. Everyone has to get the goodies in for Christmas. As usual Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast.

After my PM nap I again shovelled the walk. The wind chill is below zero.

We bought a brick of bird seed. I don't know what they use to cement all the seed into a brick but I'm sure it is tasty. I hung up the brick this afternoon.

The snow in the backyard is 21" deep. I got my 30 minutes did you?

I keep reading about the head trauma suffered by our troops in Iraq. They say that the head trauma will lead to dementia. Not a happy thought. I have been thinking about the dementia suffered by my father. I have alway thought it was caused by old age or a series of mini-strokes. However, after reading about the head injuries in Iraq I now think that maybe Dad's dementia was caused by a serious accident that Dad suffered while working on a construction project. Dad was working on the second floor of a building under construction when a crane carrying a heavy load hit dad in the head. Dad was in the hospital for about six months and in a coma for several weeks. Any ideas?

Saturday December 20, 2008

I am still trying to figure out what to do on these cold snowy Saturdays. I will have to find some good walking trails. Today I walked to Breton Village and had breakfast at the Omelet Shoppe. They have the best oatmeal in GR. I also finished my Christmas shopping.

When I got home I drove Nancy to Costco. I filled up with gas, $1.52 per gallon. Costco was crowded just like any weekday in CA. Plenty of free samples were available.

We are using the all wheel drive Aztek during these snowy days. The wimpy Congress is blasting the American car companies because they don't make more teeny cars. Most people in the snow country like a big SUV because it is safe and can plow through the snow drifts. GM is just meeting consumer demand. Eat our snow Waxman.

For the first time I actually wrote out some Christmas cards. Is it my decrease in testosterone? I walked over to the post office to mail my cards.

Nancy and I went to the Namey's for dinner. It was a good evening. Good food and conversation.

Friday, December 19, 2008

Friday December 19, 2008

I looked out the window at 0230 and saw bare pavement. I looked out at 0600 and saw snow. Nancy and I started shovelling at 0700. We had 6" of snow. It took us 45 minutes. We drove the Aztek to the MAC because it has 4 wheel drive. No plows were out on the local streets.

I finished my workout before Nancy and stayed at the MAC because I found a copy of the Free Press. At 1115 we headed home. I parked in the street because since 0700 we got an additional 6" of snow. This time I shoveled the entire driveway while Nancy made Christmas cookies.

I worked on my computer for several hours and at 4:30 the snow plows finally came down our street. In our 35 years this is the latest we have had our street plowed. I shovelled the snow piled up by the plows. Nancy completed the Christmas cards so I walked to the post office to mail them. It was after 5 when I got to the post office and the line was out the door. They must stay open later during the holiday season.

Nancy made me beans and rice for dinner. It was great. I also opened a bottle of 2 buck chuck. Wine goes straight to my head. No snow tonight but we can expect some later on Saturday. It is not even winter yet.

Thursday December 18, 2008

Boy did I oversleep. I woke at 0630 and had to hurry and get the coffee made for Nancy. I got to the MAC a little after 9. The crowd at the MAC changes after 9. Retirees and moms who got their kids off to school replace the working people who have to be to work by 9.

I went swimming yesterday I swam 1050 yards in 31 minutes. The MAC recently changed the way they disinfect the pool water. This was a great improvement. I no longer have to cover my nose or worry about having severe dry skin.

The Detroit Free Press is suspending home delivery on Monday-Wednesday. They are trying to get more people to go to their on line site. Today the sports page had a picture of the All-State football players but did not give their names or school. This data was available at their web site. As a boy reading the Free Press funnies and sports before school was a big event. Ah the world of RHS is slowly disappearing.

I spent this afternoon trying to see if I could find a simple CD player for cousin Peg. I went to several visually impaired web sites but had no luck. I also filled out a football bowl pool card. I was surprised how much I did not know about this year's football teams. Old age or just not interested?

At 3:30 Nancy and I headed to the movies. We saw the new James Bond movie. I liked it Nancy did not.

At 9 I am going to watch the Madoff story on CNBC. I find this story very interesting.

Attached is a photo of over house with all the lights ablaze. I might take a picture tomorrow night showing the additional 12" of snow that is forecast. I can't get the jpeg to load, I will try tomorrow.

Wednesday December 17, 2008

The alarm goes off at 0535. It had snowed last night (3"). I had to move fast to get the drive cleared so I could get to a 0700 breakfast. I was a guest of Dave Despres, my old boss, at the breakfast. The club is called the GR Early Breakfast Club. They meet every other week at the Women's City Club. The breakfast was great and they had a funny speaker. I actually knew several people. The average age is about 74. I am going to join.

After breakfast I headed for city hall for the last GR Building Authority meeting of the year. This is also the last meeting for the city manager who is retiring. Since I have been on the authority, 15 years, we have constructed $154,000,000 worth of projects.

This afternoon I spent most of my time cleaning up my desk. At 4:30 I again shovelled the walk. We had about 1/2" of snow since this morning.

I have a cheap CD player. I put in a disc and play several tracks (tracs?). When I turn it back on it starts at track 1. The only way I can have the machine resume playing at the place where I turned it off is to push "pause". If I do this for any length of time does it damage the disk? I am trying to find a simple machine for cousin Peg that will resume where she stopped. It has to have large buttons.

I am thinking about applying for an opening on the Kent County Road Commission. Nancy and I went to dinner tonight to talk about the pros and cons of applying. The term is for 6 years. The commission meets twice a month so we could not take a vacation over 2 weeks.

Tomorrow night we are suppose to get over 6" of snow. It is not even winter yet.

Tuesday December 17, 2008

We got a light dusting of snow overnight. I had an easy shovel.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days I do my dead lifts. I am back to my normal routine by doing 3 sets of five using a 100 pound barbell. The rest of my routine is at 75%. I will be back to 100% on Monday. After the MAC I drove home and then walked to the Kava House. It takes 20 minutes to get to the KH. The walk gives me my 30 minutes.

In the afternoon I drove to Best Buy, Circuit City and Costco to price small TVs. I took notes at each store and found that Costco was $100 cheaper. I bought a 23" set for Nancy.

Nancy and Mary Namey had to work at Meijers Garden from 5-9. Ed and I went out for a hamburger and beer. Prior to going out I set up the new TV. It works great and I did not screw up.

The weather has been very cold. I am having a hard time keeping my feet warm. Last night I went to bed with very cold feet. I think it is a family thing. My Grandfather Hughes use to keep a light bulb under the covers to warm his feet. This action started the house on fire. I hope my electric blanket works better.

Monday December 15, 2008

Yesterday when I went to bed is was in the 40s. Overnight the temperature dropped over 20 degrees in a very short time. The wind was howling all night. When I got up this morning the temperature was in the teens with very high winds. The roads were glare ice. I grabbed a bag of salt and spread it over our drive so we could get down our hill. A few degrees colder and the salt would not have worked. Because of all the ice and snow I again had to drive to the MAC. The parking lot was full.

After the MAC I ran some Christmas related errands. I had to wait 40 minutes at the post office in order to mail some packages. I also stopped by the office to give some money to the ,adopt a family for Christmas, program. The roads were in tough shape with near white out conditions.

This afternoon I did some work on the computer. I say it was work but it really was just messing around. I checked on Bernie Madoff and his money fraud. I find this scam very interesting. It is amazing all the smart people that did not know what was going on. Where is Madoff? Is he in jail? Did he spend the money on cars, boats, condos, girls? A lot remains to be determined.

My eye doctor let me try a new super-duper contact. It is comfortable but not as powerful as I would like. This afternoon I picked up a contact that was made to my prescription. I put it in and alas I can see clearly now.

I have been harping on getting 30 minutes outdoors every day. So around 5, I went outside and shovelled the walk and then went on a short 1.25 mile walk. I did get my 30 minutes.

Tonight is a poor TV night so I am going to bed to continue reading a good book. It is called "Paris, 1919" and is about the peace conference after WWI. With the bad economic times I see a lot of references in the papers to the Joad family.

Sunday, December 14, 2008

Sunday December 14, 2008

Sunday is swim day. Nancy and I headed to the MAC at 0745 so that we could be first in the pool when it opens at 0800. We accomplished our mission. It was 15 minutes before anyone else arrived. We swam for 45 minutes.

After the swim we headed to Meijers for our weekly supplies. For breakfast Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs. I read the first section of the GR Press and then took my Sunday nap. After the nap I went to Best Buy to check out TV's and computers. I noted that HP has a new desktop that has the 24" monitor and computer in one unit. It looks neat. It has a touch screen and web cam all built in. I also checked out the TV's and noted that the prices have dropped in the last several weeks. How come all the TV's less than 27" are all 720P? I could not find a 1080.

It has been above freezing all day. I took out a steel spade and opened up our storm drain. I then cut a channel for all the storm water to reach the drain. I enjoy this. How come a 70 year old man still likes to play in the water?

I helped Nancy tape some packages for mailing to CA. She has been working hard on getting her Christmas shopping done early.

I told Sasha that in 1 week my biorhythms will start to go up. I always note an increase in energy and enthusiasm after the winter solstice. The days are getting longer and spring is on its way.

After January 1 I will add some comments on my blog from my great grandfathers diary that he kept in 1938. I got my 30 minutes in today did you? My spell check is not working so I have to use the dictionary that my mother gave me in 1956. It is indispensable. Thanks Mom, I love you.

Saturday, December 13, 2008

Saturday December 13, 2008

It was 17 when we got up this morning. The snow, ice and cold kept me from riding my bike or kayaking. I walked around Reeds Lake. It is about 6.5 miles. I was surprised that despite the cold a lot of runners were out. I bought a NY Times and had coffee at the Kava House.

It looks like GWB is going to bail out the auto companies. This is good.

The story on the collapse of the Madoff fund was very interesting. Even rich people get robbed.

I liked typing on SPS's under desk keyboard so much that I bought one. This afternoon I installed it and rearranged my office. Change is good.

This evening Nancy and I went out to dinner with the Moleski's. A good time was had by all. Good food and conversation is always fun.

Gas has gone up $0.20 in the past 2 days. I predict that it will reach $2 by the end of the year. I still have some Christmas shopping to do. I think I will wait until next week. Speaking of Christmas I talked to Tasha today and she said weather permitting she and petunia will be in GR for Christmas. Nancy and I look forward to seeing her. I got my 30 minutes in did you?

Friday, December 12, 2008

Friday December 12, 2008

Today I set my alarm clock. I had to have my car into the shop by 0800. After delivering the car, I walked to the MAC. I had coffee at Breton Village waiting for the call from the shop. I got the call and they gave me the bad news. About $500 now and probably $2800 in the near future. Should I trade in now? I love the car and it does everything I want (carry my bike and kayak). We use Nancy's car whenever the two of us travel. How about I trade in Nancy's car for a nice new Taurus?

After picking up my car I headed home to catch up on some unfinished items and update my blog. I have been having a hard time keeping warm despite multiple layer. Is it old age?

Tonight Nancy and I ran some errands and stopped at Panera Bread for a quick bite. The rest of the evening will be spent reading the paper and watching TV. I got my 30 minutes did you?

Thursday December 11, 2008

I am still driving my car to the MAC. I don't have enough nerve to try and ride my retro. I see other folks riding their bikes but I am gun shy. Every time I have a lay off from exercising, when I return, I follow this sequence, 50% day 1, 66% day 2, 75% day 3 and 87.5% day 4. This takes 1 week so at the start of the second week I am back to my normal routine.

Today is a busy day. After my morning routine, I had an eye doctor appointment at 2. The doc is giving me a new contact that is suppose to be state of the art. Generally my eyes are ok.

At 4 I had an emergency Grand Rapids Building Authority meeting. The emergency was a non issue. We did resolve a long going legal action against a contractor and designer.

At 5:45 Nancy and I meet the Horling's at Leo's for dinner before the Civic Theater. The play was the musical version of "A Wonderful Life". Nancy and Hal gave it a 2.0. I gave it a 3.2. I think Karen agreed with me.

Wednesday December 10, 2008

Ah! Wednesday my easy day. The footing is so bad because no one shovels their walk, I drove to the MAC. I swam for 30 minutes (1000 yards).

When I got home, after breakfast at the Cheri Inn, I decided to string some Christmas lights outside. I started stringing lights along the eve located along the front of the house. Then I did the breeze way and garage. I still had some lights so I did the evergreens each side of the front door and strung lights directly over the door. I will send a photo. It took me almost all afternoon.

Since it was book club night, Ed Namey and I went out for pizza. We solved all the world problems.

I am back reading the Detroit Free Press. The Detroit paper has a vastly different point of view regarding the GM bailout than the LA Times. The Free Press has made some good arguments. Unfortunately the auto bigwigs have not been able to articulate their point.

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

Tuesday December 9, 2008

I have some jet lag. I got up at 0615 and headed outside to shovel. We had about 2" of wet snow and ice on the sidewalk and driveway. It took about 1.5 hours to get everything cleaned up. Nancy and I are a great snow shoveling team.

Because of the snow on the sidewalks I did not want to take my bike to the MAC. I walked. It was misting when I started but was raining when I got to the MAC. I noted that gas was $1.59 a gallon. After the MAC, I visited D&W and bought a club sandwich at their deli. The sandwich was my breakfast and lunch. Nancy did go to the store to stock up on supplies for the rest of the week.

This afternoon I tried to get caught up on my e-mails and regular mail. I have a long ways to go. We have winter storm warning in effect until 10 this evening. Today is Tuesday so we will watch NCIS this evening before heading to bed.

Sasha says that is takes 1 day for each hour of time difference to get rid of jet lag. I have 2 days left. Did we have a prop lag before jet planes?

I got my 30 minutes in today. My weight gain was about 5 pounds. I hope to lose this weight in 3 weeks.

Monday December 8, 2008

Today is our big travel day back to GR. We left Sasha's at 0930 and headed for SF International. Our flight is scheduled for 1215. The flight was on time. Boy! did Bob and Nancy luck out. For the second time, nobody was sitting in the window seat. This was great because we could stretch out. The flight was smooth and took only 4 hours. The flight east is about 45 minutes shorter than the flight west. Headwinds, etc.

We waited about an hour in Cleveland and then headed for GR. The plane was only 50% full. GR had plenty of snow on the ground and the temperature was 29 degrees. The taxi could not get up our driveway. We had to carry our bags. The first thing I did when I got inside was to turn my electric blanket on. I did not spend my 30 minutes out doors. Tomorrow!

Sunday December 7, 2008

Today is the day that Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. I knew someone who was there. He worked for me on Midway Island. His name was Nick Carter. Why do I still remember this?

Today is also a travel day for Bob and Nancy. We took I5 North to Sasha's place. This trip was uneventful. We had dinner at the hamburger place near Sasha's home. I had the 3/4 burger. It was good. Tomorrow we head for snow and winter.

Sunday, December 7, 2008

Saturday December 6, 2008

LA slept through the night. He did not call out for mom or dad. After coffee we loaded LA up and headed for Adventure City. It took us longer than usual because we had the wrong set of directions. However, we finally made it.

Adventure City is a small theme park with rides only for little kids. LA and I rode on the roller coaster 2 times. He also went on every other ride. He had a great time.

When we got back to LB, Vera and SPS had just arrived home. They said they had a great time in BH. I got SPS to help me finish LA's RR track and round house for toy. When we finally got it erected I have to say that it looks like a fun toy. SPS went to the Outback and bought us takeout. It was good. We did observe that we all think the portions were smaller. Is it the economy?

Tomorrow is our long trip back to Sasha's. Nancy is feeling much better. SPS did tell me about UM beating Duke in bb. I checked the weather in GR and noted that the temp had not been above freezing for several days. I will still follow the 30 minute rule.

Friday, December 5, 2008

Friday December 5, 2008

A beautiful day in LB. The day started with a clear blue sky. It warmed up to 71. After coffee, I took LA to the park at Signal Hill. Nancy is still under the weather so she stayed home. LA spent 30 minutes on the swing. He only agreed to stop after told that Grandpa's arms would fall off. We also spent considerable time on the merry-go round.

SPS came home early today to make reservations in BH for tonight. Nancy and I are taking care of LA all night.

Got a call from Tasha and she explained her less than fruitful week. I am amazed at her ability to solve problems. Her move with the congressman is brilliant.

Tonight Nancy and I loaded LA in the car and headed to Belmont Shores. We had dinner at BJ's. It was good. After dinner we walked along Second Street. It was very busy. The economy in the area must be pretty good because we saw a lot of families eating out.

Tomorrow we go to Adventure Land. We hope to get LA in bed by 9. Lots of luck. He took a 3 hour nap. SPS and Vera should be home by noon.

Thursday December 4, 2008

Started the day at the blue collar Starbucks. Bought a LA Times, I like this paper and it is cheap compared to the NY Times.

When I got home Nancy and I decided to take LA to Huntington Beach. LA and I walked the path along side the beach. The path has a lot of bike traffic, even for a week day. Nancy stayed in the car because she is still under the weather.

When we got home I make a quick trip to the grocery store to purchase some supplies (beer, etc). Nancy and LA took a nap and I started assembling a "Classic Train Table with Roundhouse". I got the table assembled. Tomorrow the roundhouse.

SLS is feeling better and Vera and I never really got the bug. Tomorrow SLS and Vera are going to "Wicked" and then will stay the evening in Beverly Hills. Nancy and I will take care of LA. It should be a fun weekend.

At the beach we had clear skies and warm temps. At SLS's the day was overcast and cool. Go figure.

The news reports in CA regarding the GM bailout are not as intense as in MI. I think most people in CA could care less. It does not look good.

Wednesday December 3, 2008

While drinking coffee this AM I get a call from Nancy telling me that we have to take LA to see Dr Kim. LA appears to have the flu. Dr Kim confirmed that LA did have the flu. Nancy also has the same bug.

After the Dr visit we took in a movie. The movie was Madagascar 2. LA enjoyed the movie. I gave it a 3.5. LA fell asleep on the way home. Nancy put him down and he slept for 3 hours.

A cheap plastic mud flap on the rental car came loose. I tied it up with a steel hangar. After my repair job I took a 2.5 hour hike.

This evening Vera, Nancy and I took LA to his gymnastics class. LA likes this class.

SPS has also been under the weather. Nancy and SPS are now in bed (8:48 PM). Tomorrow we may go to the beach. I want to rent a bike with kid carrier so I can take LA for a ride.

Tuesday December 2, 2008

Our first full day in LB. The day started overcast (foggy) and cool. It remained that way all day. The temperature did not reach 70.

I walked to the Starbucks on Willow. Every Starbucks has its own identity. The Willow store is a working mans coffee shop. Not too many newspaper readers. I bought a LA Times. I like this newspaper.

After Starbucks Nancy, LA, and I head for story hour at the LB library. LA was a little hyper. This was according to Nancy. I read a children's book on Michigan. It was quite good.

After story hour we went to a park in Signal Hill. A small town loaded with oil wells. The park is on top of Signal Hill and it has a great view of the LA area. Of course our view was not good because of the fog. We had lunch at Costco.

After lunch, LA and I took a nap. I did make a trip to Walgreen's to get some tooth paste and shaving cream.

SPS came home from work not feeling well. He went right to bed. Nancy cancelled her pork chop with stuffing dinner and we had her world famous poached eggs. It is 8 PM and I must watch NCIS. Remember 30 minutes outside each day.

Monday December 1, 2008

Today is a travel day. We got up at 0600 and I made a quick run to Starbucks. We loaded the car for our trip to LB.

Apollo had an 0820 appointment at the vets. Nancy and I arrived on time and immediately met with Dr. Littlehale. He said Apollo was responding to the medicine. After we dropped Apollo off, we hit the road.

The traffic on all roads was very heavy. For the first 200 miles we encountered fog. Once we got close to LA the fog lifted. This year is the first year that I noticed the deterioration of the CA roads. In the past I was impressed with the good maintenance. I guess money shortages are hitting all states.

When we got to SPS's house SPS was waiting for us. We walked over to the day care to pick up LA. I took a short nap.

Tonight Vera brought home a beef, chicken, rice dish and a salad. It was good. We just got back from a walk around the block. It is a pleasant evening. Everyone is tired from all the travel so it will be an early night.

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Sunday November 30, 2008

SPS got up early this morning to get ready for their long drive to LA. At 0830, SPS, Vera and LA headed out. They have a 5 hour drive if the traffic is light.

Nancy and I cleaned Sasha's brass table and chair. It took about 1 hour. The table looks great.

This afternoon I took a walk down to Santana Row. The temperature was in the 70s. I stopped at the Orvis Store to see if they had any leather vests on sale. I was amazed at the number of people shopping at the high end stores along Santana Row.

After a short nap, Sasha, Nancy and I headed to Mimi's for dinner. It was Sunday night but we still had to wait 20 minutes. The food was good.

Tonight I have to pack for our trip to LB. Nancy and I will leave after Apollo's Dr visit. Sasha say is should only take about 20 minutes. I hope to make the trip in 5 hours. We are taking a lot of food left over from the holiday weekend.

Saturday, November 29, 2008

Saturday November 29, 2008

Day started normally, coffee at Starbucks and after reading the paper I brought Nancy a decaf and Sasha a hot chocolate. For exercise Nancy, SPS and I headed for Ross's. After a short time at this store we headed for Stan's donuts. Nancy had the glazed and I had a fried cake. SPS declined. We walked back to Sasha and of course the walk negated the calories of the donuts. Yea right!

This afternoon Sasha, Vera, LA and SPS loaded the van and headed to a park off Pruneridge. Nancy and I walked to the park. After about an hour at the park we headed to Holder's for lunch/breakfast. We all took a nap after this large meal.

After my nap I took a short walk. We all watched the movie "Happy Feet". It was ok.

SPS and Vera are now packing and getting for their long ride to LB. SPS wants to start at 0800. Tomorrow Nancy and I will polish Sasha's brass table and stool.

Friday November 28, 2008

Today is called Black Friday. I started at Starbucks and noted that most people were going to work. On my way back to Sasha's, Nancy pulled up in the rented Avenger. I got in and drove Nancy and Vera to Target and then I drove them to the mall. We drove around and around trying to find a parking space. None was available. I dropped Vera and Nancy off and headed back to Sasha's.

After an hour of shopping Nancy called and I headed back to the Mall to pick up our shoppers. The traffic was terrible.

When we got home, Vera, Sasha, SPS, LA and I walked to Circuit City to pick out a TV for Sasha. We also looked at computers. No purchases were made.

After lunch SPS, Nancy and Sasha headed to Costco to look at TVs. I took and nap as did Vera and LA. I took a 1.5 hour walk after my nap.

This evening we are relaxing at Sasha's. Tonight we are having pizza. LA is taking a long nap. I hope all readers had a great Thanksgiving.

On this day in 1961, I left Hawaii for Midway Island. This plane was a 2 engine prop DC3. I remember looking out the window as we approached Midway and thinking I am going to spend 1 year on this postage stamp in the middle of the Pacific.

Thursday November 27, 2008

Thanksgiving in CA. I started with coffee at Starbucks. Yes Starbucks was open on Thanksgiving. The weather was cool and cloudy. LA woke up in a good mood. I had the opportunity to play with him in the morning.

At 1130 we piled into SPS's van and headed for downtown SJ. His van was big enough to hold, Nancy, Sasha, Vera, LA, SPS and yours truly. Dinner was at the Fairmont in San Jose. The food was presented in buffet style. The food was great. I had traditional turkey and dressing. The others had a more mixed meal, eggs Benedict, roast beef, etc.

After dinner we walked around downtown SJ. They had all the displays up for Christmas in the park.

When we got home I took a well deserved nap. The rest of the day was spent relaxing and snacking. We had chips and dip, a sandwich tray from Costco and of course some beer.

In 1961 I had Thanksgiving dinner at the BOQ, Pearl Harbor Naval Base. I remember I had to wear my uniform. The weather was very tropical.

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Wednesday November 26, 2008

It rained all night. Mud puddles are everywhere. I had coffee at Starbucks (what's new). Today is errand day for Bob and Nancy.

We start out going to Cosentinos for cheese spread, then to Trader Joe's and then Safeway. After unloading our goodies, we load Apollo, the cat, in his carrier and take him to the vet. We left Apollo at the vet and headed to Costco. Surprise! Costco was not that busy for the day before a holiday. We had a hot dog at Costco. Gas was $1.82 per gallon.

We picked up Apollo at the vet and headed for home. The vet had given Apollo a new prescription, so we headed back to Costco to get the meds.

Sasha left the office early and got home at 6. We contacted SPS and family and found out they were stuck in traffic. We, Sasha, Debbie and I, headed to Armadillo Willy's for dinner.

SLS and family got to Sasha's at 9:30. The 5 hour trip from LA took 10 hours. We learned that Vero is going to have a little girl. Everyone has a name for the little girl. It will be great having a new grandchild.

In 1961 on the day before Thanksgiving I boarded a military plane near SF for Pearl Harbor. I spent Thanksgiving Eve in the Pearl Harbor BOQ.

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Tuesday November 25, 2008

Jet lag is over, I woke up at my normal 0555. After coffee at Starbucks, Nancy and I headed to Lucky's for some groceries. We then departed for the Bart depot at Milbrae. The subway trip into SF was easy. We got off at Powell Street. I called Sasha to see what time she wanted to meet for lunch. She said 1145 at 555 Market. Nancy and I looked in several stores on our way to meet Shasa. Shasa took us to Cafe Bianco. It was great. I gave it a 3.8. Remember that I grade on a 4.0 system.

After lunch we walked up Powell Street and stopped in several stores. SF is a great city.

I mentioned to Nancy and Sasha that in 1961 on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving I was driven up to SF from Port Hueneme, CA by fellow USN, CEC officer, Ensign Duffy. I cannot remember his first name. All I remember is that he was from MA and attended RPI. He was going to visit a relative who lived in the Bay area. We drove around SF and then he dropped me off at Treasure Island Naval Base.

Nancy and I took the BART back to Milbrae. It took us about an hour to get to Sasha's house. Nancy wanted to go to DWS and I wanted to get a CD at Barnes and Noble. We walked to the stores. I purchased the sound track from "O Brother Where Art Thou". I loved the music. I am now listening to the sound track.

Nancy and I have a busy day tomorrow. We have many errands to run and must take App0l0 to the heart doctor.

Sasha got home at 7 tonight. Another long day. Right now it is time for NCIS so I am signing off. Remember get outside for 30 minutes.

Monday, November 24, 2008

Monday November 24, 2008

I still have jet lag. I heard Sasha moving around at 0500. I got out of bed at 0530 and was at Starbucks at 0600. I am amazed at how busy this SB is early in the morning. They all seem to be regulars. Tomorrow I will try another coffee shop. Starbucks coffee is too strong.

I brought Nancy a small decaf. After breakfast we loaded up the Avenger and headed to Gilroy. Gilroy has a large discount mall. We spent most of the morning looking around. You see 1 discount mall and you have seen them all. I had a slice of pizza for lunch. It was overpriced.

I was yawning heavily on our way home and Nancy kept talking to me so I would not go to sleep. I took a short nap. I slept very sound for about 1.5 hours. I think the dark, gloomy day had something to do with my lack of energy.

After my nap I took a 1.5 hour walk. I walked up Stevens Creek Blvd and noted all the car lots had some really good prices on used cars. It was dark at 5 PM.

When I got home Nancy had started dinner. I had two chicken sandwiches and a small salad. Nancy had a salad. Sasha got home at 7 PM. She puts in a very long day. Tomorrow we are going into SF. We will take the Bart and have lunch with Sasha.

Sunday, November 23, 2008

Sunday November 23, 2008

Ah jet lag! I woke up at 0430 (0730 GR time). I knew Starbucks was not open until 0600 so I rolled over and slept to 0530. I was surprised that Starbucks was very busy on a Sunday morning. After I finished my coffee I brought Nancy a decaf.

Sasha, alias DLS, said that she wanted a hot chocolate so I returned to Starbucks. The temperature was in the high 40's with sunny skies.

We decided to make a Costco run. Unlike in GR, cars were backed up in the street trying to get into the store. The lines at the gas station were 10 cars deep. California Costco's are like a mini UN. The New world order has arrived. Sasha and I had a slice of pizza. Nancy had a hot dog. Sasha purchased some groceries and Nancy bought a coat. We also looked at computers and TVs. Sasha bought a rotisserie chicken for dinner. A quick stop was also made at Lucky's.

Around 4:30 PM, Nancy and Sasha walked to the Cost Plus and I took a 4.5 mile walk. Sasha fixed string beans, potatoes and chicken for dinner. It was great. It is now a little after 9 PM Sasha has to work tomorrow and is getting prepared. She gets up at 0450 and heads to SF at 0550. Nancy and I are watching "cold case". Tomorrow we are heading to Gilroy, CA to visit a discount mall.

Saturday November 22, 2008

The alarm goes off at 0435. Today is our big trip to San Fran to see DLS. Our taxi arrives at 0515. The flights to Cleveland and SF were smooth. We were lucky on the flight to SF to have 1 of the 3 seats in our row empty. Nancy and I took turns stretching out.

At SF we took the monorail to the rental car area and picked up our Dodge Avenger. We walked around the car and noted several bad paint chips and it looked like the side of the car had been keyed. We noted these damages on the provided form. We thought we were suppose to leave the form at a booth on our way out. There was no booth. We headed south but Nancy was worried about the damages to the car so she called Thrifty. They said we had to return the form in person and could not mail it in. We complied and returned the form. What a pain.

We got to DLS's at about 2:30 PM. The first thing we noted were her new wood floors. They look great. We also rode with DLS to the grocery store. I bought some beer.

We had dinner at the Red Robin. I had a salmon burger and Nancy and DLS had the chicken burger. We topped off the evening by going to Yumi Yogurt. Enough said.

The day started with the temperature at 21 degrees. We got to Cleveland and the temperature was still in the 20's with heavy snow on the ground. We had to spend 15 minutes getting the plane de-iced. In SF the sky was blue and the temperature was 70. This change in just 5 hours. My grandparents never flew on an airplane and they would be amazed at the distances we travel in just a few hours. I sometimes wonder what their comments would be if they could see all the changes in the past 40 years.

Friday November 21, 2008

Boy was it cold this morning! I performed my exercise routine at home. I went on a short 1.5 mile run followed by a bike ride around Reeds Lake. I wore mittens but my hands still got cold. My mittens are wool and I think I need to purchase some leather covering for the wool. The leather covers used to be called chopper mitts. I have googled chopper mitts and had no luck locating the manufacturer. None of the local outdoor stores carry them.

When I got home Kim was still cleaning so I drove to Costco to top off my gas tank. I also had a pizza slice.

This afternoon I spent some time on the internet. I looked up bios on John Dingell and Henry Waxman. I also checked our stocks. Very discouraging.

I purchased a UM engineering school directory. I found an e-mail address for a Norm Schram. I roomed with Norm Schram in the fall of 1960. I sent an e-mail to see if they are the same Norm.

Nancy and I are all packed for our trip. I called the taxi company and they will pick us up at 0515.

Tonight we are going out to dinner with the Nameys. We are going to Great Lakes Brewing. I will try to keep up the blog while on vacation. Remember to keep a positive thought.

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Thursday November 20, 2008

I encountered snow flakes on my bike trip to the MAC this morning. I have finally learned how to dress for the cold. So riding the bike on cold mornings is not unpleasant.

I continue to read the Detroit Free Press with my morning coffee. The crisis with the car makers is front page news. Of course the Free Press is very supportive of the auto industry. I get very passionate about the future of the car industry. Having spent most of my life in MI I know how important its survival is to the state.

When I was in HS we played a football game in Flint. There were 10,000 people at the game. Most of the people had ties to Alpena. It was very common for young men right out of Alpena HS to head south to Flint for a job in the auto plants. The pay was good and overtime plentiful. No experience needed. Starting UAW workers made more money than starting teachers or engineers. At my 50th HS reunion I was surprised to learn how many of my classmates were retired from an auto plant. Most had returned to Alpena. If GM or Ford goes bankrupt their retirement pay could be reduced. This is not a pleasant thought.

This afternoon I took a 3 mile walk. I stopped at the bank and renewed a CD that had come due. The current interest is 4%.

Nancy is on the OHNA board so she had a 6PM board meeting. At 7PM an open meeting of the OHNA was held. There was a good turnout. Nancy was reelected Treasurer.

Tomorrow we must finishing packing for our trip to DSL's and SPS's. I am looking forward to the trip.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Wednesday November 19, 2008

Ah Wednesday my easy day. I did 1/2 of my normal exercise routine.

We had a light coating of snow this morning. The news reports mentioned slippery spots on all the local roads. The temperature has been low enough for the past week to lower the temperature of the road surfaces. Any moisture results in ice and not puddles.

This morning I had a GR Building Authority meeting. We had a full agenda and have several interesting projects. All the project involve parking structures.

After my meeting I met with JD at the office to discuss some past projects. SCECO is updating their resume and needed some information on projects in the 80's and 90's. JD bought me lunch.

When I got home I began packing for our trip to CA. I am 95% complete. I also took a walk around Reeds Lake.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

November 18, 2008

My natural alarm clock woke up at 0615. Helen and I left for Gaylord at 0720. It was cold in GR but no snow. When we got to Cadillac it was snowing hard. All the road agencies had their plows out. Going east on M55 the road was only partially cleared. By the time we got to Houghton Lake it had quit snowing and the sun was out. We got to Gaylord at 1030. Don C arrived about 5 minutes later. I talked to Don a short time and then headed south. The trip south was uneventful.

After I got home I took a 4.5 mile walk. It is turning cold. I expect snow on the ground tomorrow.

Tonight we watch NCIS, the only prime time show I watch regularly. Usually a long car trip tires me out so I expect that I will head for bed immediately after NCIS. Remember on these dark gloomy days to get outside for 20 minutes. No excuses.

Monday, November 17, 2008

Monday November 17, 2008

It was very cold this morning. I rode by bike to the MAC. I have to find some new shoes to keep my feet warm on these cold morning. It is 9 PM and my feet are still cold.

This afternoon I spent some time catching up on my reading while I was waiting for a call from Helen. She was travelling from AZ. I was scheduled to take Helen to Mt Pleasant or Gaylord. The plane got in at 4 and Helen said the weather was terrible in Gaylord. Heavy snow etc. We changed our plans and we will leave first thing in the morning for Gaylord.

Right now we are all sitting in our back room watching a rerun of House. House is a certified jerk.

We are having a lot of lake effect snow. Holland has 4" on the ground and Grand Rapids does not have any.

I am heading upstairs to turn on my electric blanket. There is nothing better than getting into a super heated bed. Nancy hates electric blankets.

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Sunday November 16, 2008

The alarm went off at 6:56. I bounded out of bed and looked out the window. Yes folks it was snowing. The snow was sticking. Nancy and I headed for the MAC to start our 0800 swim. I felt pretty good this morning and swam 1600 yards in 45 minutes.

After swimming we headed for Meijers to purchase supplies for our short week. Next Sat we are heading for DSL's. I am looking forward to the trip to CA. Despite my age I still get excited when I travel. It is like a big adventure. I also get excited when I see a deer.

I took a short nap and then went on a 3 mile walk. It was snowing when I started but after 20 minutes the sun came out.

Tasha called and told Nancy about being served a notice that she was involved in a case of mistaken identity. Tasha has contacted a neighbor who has given her the name of a lawyer. Tasha has the matter under control.

Tomorrow I have to pick up my sister at the airport and drive her to Mt Pleasant where Jen will take her north to the big house. Both Nancy and I have a full week. It is good because is will make the time go fast.

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Saturday November 15, 2008

November is a dark, gloomy month. Today reinforces this observation. It was 34 when we woke up. I tried the new Omelet Shoppe on Michigan Avenue. The oatmeal was good but the coffee was luke warm. I gave it a 2.9.

Today I decided to ride my road bike to Cedar Springs. I put on 2 pair of wool socks and carried my back pack with some warm clothes. The wind was fierce going north. I got 2 miles north of Rockford and it started to rain. I turned around and headed for the car, a distance of 15 miles. I made good time with the wind at my back.

When I got home I noticed that a lot of leaves had dropped last night. I headed for D&W to purchase leaf bags. The store had 2 bundles left. I raked enough leaves to fill 3 bags. Also got the snow shovels down and filled and put up the bird feeder.

For dinner Nancy and I went to the Brandywine. I had the liver and onions and Nancy had the scram-d-ham.

I am now watching football, Stanford vs USC and Miss State vs Alabama. I am pulling for Stanford and Miss State. We have the heat on in the back room and it is putting Nancy to sleep.

Remember kids try and spent at least 20 minutes each day outside. It is good for your mental health, especially in the fall and winter.

Friday, November 14, 2008

Friday November 14, 2008

The day started with a light rain. Today I am going to Rosebush so I had to hurry my exercise routine. I decided to walk 4.5 miles. For breakfast I stopped at the Bagel Beanery and had 2 bagels and a coffee.

On my way north I noted the heavy traffic. It finally hit me, today is the day before hunting season. November 15 is a magic day in Michigan. When I was in high school all the guys got an excused absence for school. No luck for girls.

My dad use to spend a whole week getting ready for deer season. His office was even closed on the 15th because all the men were hunting.

Cousin Peg was in a good mood. She loves her satellite radio. We had lunch at Bob Evans and talked about family. After lunch we stopped at the Rosebush library to get Peg a card. She can walk to the library from the Manor. I have to buy her a CD player that has large buttons. She must be able to push one button to start and stop the machine. I also want the machine to stop and start where she left off.

Tonight Nancy and I had dinner at home. She fixed me some soup from Trader Joe's. It was good.

Today I bought a book on 1938. In 38 the life expectancy was 59 years, a new home cost $3,900, new car $860. A gallon of gas cost $0.10 and a gallon of milk $0.50. No TV and we burned coal for heat. Instead of dial phones we just picked up the receiver and told the operator the number we wanted. Jimmy Ms phone # was 484. Phone operators were usually high school girls.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Thursday November 13, 2008

Today started out rainy and cool. I hurried my home program so I could get in the MAC pool before the 0900 deadline. I made it. I swam 1500 yard.

The Detroit Free Press continues its doom and gloom articles. Can GM and Ford survive? Did the ex mayor improperly use money from his charity? Did the head of the Wayne County Board of Commissioners hire people for jobs that required no work? Can the Lions win a game?

After lunch Nancy and I made a Costco run. I was out of beer and Nancy needed to get a prescription filled. Costco was crowded but nothing like CA. Costco gas was $1.92 per gallon.
Beer is $6.72 a gallon.

Tonight Nancy and I went to "Great Lakes Shipping". We took our 1 meal free coupon. Tomorrow I am going to Rosebush to visit cousin Peg. We will have lunch and go to the library and get Peg set up for books on tape.

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Wednesday November 12, 2008

We woke up to some heavy rain this morning. However, by the time I was ready to go outside the rain had stopped.

Wednesday is my easy day. I loaded up my retro and headed for Riverside Park. I rode my bike to Rockford and had breakfast at Arnie's. Along the way I had a deer run across the trail. The gloomy weather must have kept all bikers inside because I did not see one bike on the trail.

I took a short nap this afternoon and then spent some time on my computer. I downloaded the manual for my camera and refreshed my memory on how to operate the camera.

I was standing in line at the bank and overheard, ok I was eave dropping, several women my age talking about their facebook entries. I will have to talk the Tasha and DSL about facebook. I know nothing.

Tonight is book club for Nancy. I had pizza with Ed Namey. We discussed the GM situation and disagreed on what should be done. I am for bankruptcy. We also made our predictions for BO's cabinet. I said neither the Gov or Bonior will be in the cabinet. Only time will tell.

Tuesday November 11, 2008

Happy Veterans Day. I started the day doing only my push ups, chin ups and leg raises. I will not do the others until my pulled muscles get better.

I talked to several old veterans at the Kava House and they all remembered their service number. Today's Free Press was very depressing. GM and Ford were going to fold. MI, Detroit and other states and cities with American auto plants would die. I don't share this doom and gloom.

After my coffee I headed for the MAC to try swimming during the 12-1 open swim hour. I had the pool to myself.

At 5:30 PM Nancy and I headed to H and K's home near Silver Lake for dinner. I brought my laptop with our elderhostel photos. H had his 50" TV hooked up as a monitor for our laptops. Everyone viewed our elderhostel trip and H and K's Med cruise that included stops in Venice, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Naples, Rome, Florence, Nice/Monaco, and Barcelona. They had some great pictures. Both H and K are good cooks so the meal was great. We had a good time. Fine food, wine and conversation with old friends is always enjoyable.

Monday, November 10, 2008

Monday November 10, 2008

I looked out the window this morning and our green grass was white. We had our first sticking snow.

Did you know that today is the Marine Corps birthday? Semper fi!

My fall from my road bike last week pull a muscle in my rib cage, so I had an abbreviated work out this morning. I also have a pulled calf muscle, cause unknown, that has limited my running. Getting old is not for sissies.

After lunch I raked leaves in our strip between sidewalk and curb. I filled 5 bags. I think tomorrow is the last day in 2008 that the city will pick up yard waste.

I walked around Reeds Lake. It takes me exactly 2 hours.

Yesterday Nancy and I were looking for DVD's and I saw a "Looney Tunes" DVD. Nancy said she was not going to purchase it. I sulked and said ok, I will put it on my Xmas list along with a 3 stooges DVD.

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. If you know a veteran ask him if he remembers his service number. I think about 90% of vets know their number.

Sunday, November 9, 2008

Sunday November 9, 2008

Nancy and I woke up to a rain/snow mix. It was cold and dreary. However, like good troopers we headed to the MAC for our Sunday swim. I felt pretty good and tried all my Mike Phelps moves. I think the lazy day I had yesterday had something to do with my high energy.

After the MAC we headed to Meijers for our weekly fill up. We filled up all three of our reuseable canvas bags. See even us old folks have gone green.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. The GR newspaper was not as gloomy as the Detroit paper. After the newspaper I took my Sunday nap. In this cold weather I use my electric blanket. The instant warmth puts me right to sleep.

After the nap I took a 3 mile walk. I am following my grandfathers advise that no matter what the weather you must spend 3o minutes outdoors every day. I think this is good advice.

Please note that I have not mentioned the Detroit Lions. I have not watched the team all year. I do know they lost. I think the Lions and their owner William Ford are emblematic of what is wrong with Detroit and the auto industry. They are living in the past. They have lost their edge and are no longer competitive. The fire is gone. Only a ruthless change will correct the situation. I no longer support a bail out. Let them go bankrupt.

On a lighter note, Nancy is fixing that great soup we got at Trader Joe's when we were at Tashas. We are also having that great American staple hot dogs. Doesn't that sound good for a cold, gloomy November night?

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Yes folks November has returned with a bang. It rained and snowed all day. It was too warm for the snow to stick.

This morning I ran several errands. Nancy has a sprained foot so I picked up a few items at Meijers. I also checked out some CD players for cousin Peg. I want to get one that is easy to use so she can listen to books on CD. I think I might try a $30 unit I saw a Best Buy.

At 12 I drove Nancy to Meijers Garden so she could work at a Holiday sale. I filled the Taurus up and paid $1.99 per gallon. The Taurus is getting about 22 mpg in the city.

I stopped by Schuler Books to read several chapters of a bike repair book. I am trying to figure out how I can make the bike frame Tasha gave into a super duper single speed.

When I got home the UM game was on. UM won!! I also took a short nap.

At 5 I picked up Nancy and we joined all the senior citizens at Russ's. I was going to watch TT vs OSU on TV but I scrolled by the western channel and saw Rooster Cogburn was on. I ended up watching John Wayne in his best movie.

Friday November 7, 2008

It rained last night but the sun was up by the time I pedaled to the MAC. I pulled a muscle in my calf while running so I had to cut my run short. I was kinda glad because it is Friday and I was tired.

The Detroit Free Press continues to write about the problems in the auto industry. It is very serious for MI. I think that perhaps bankruptcy is the best option. However, the Gov and UAW will not let this happen.

On an up note I am enjoying reading about the pres-elect and his young family. I think that the BO family are a good model for the USA. I think they should get a poodle.

After much hectoring I finally called Phil Dougherty to get our door bell fixed. Phil came within a couple of hours and had it fixed in 20 minutes.

It was such a nice day that Nancy and I decided to drive to Grand Haven and walk the pier. By the time we got to GH the clouds have moved in. The temperature had dropped about 20 degrees. We started the walk but after a short distance we played penguin and said this sucks. Nancy and Bob headed back to GR. We had dinner at the Brandywine.

November weather is returning tonight. Snow is expected.

Thursday November 6, 2008

Yes folks another sunny 70 degree day. The Detroit Free Press today was huge with all the election returns. The east side of the state was a blood bath for republicans.

The election is not a day old and already the dems are fighting. Representative Henry Waxman of CA is trying to unseat Detroit's John Dingell from being chairman of an important committee. Dingell, the longest serving representative, is a favorite of the auto industry. I agree with many of his positions. He may be a UAW man but if a power plant or a new bridge creates jobs he is all for it. Waxman does not want power plants he supports solar power and diapers for cows. I think Dingell serves MI well. (good English?)

It was too windy for kayaking today so I walked around Reeds Lake. It took me 2 hours.

Nancy needed a new swim cap, so before dinner we stopped at MC. Dinner of course was at Great Lakes Shipping. I had the wet burrito. I watched "My Name is Earl" tonight and then I started writing this blog. My 1956 dictionary does not list "blog".

Wednesday November 5, 2008

All hail!, the silly season is over. In Michigan, the Democrats totally creamed the Republicans. We had 2 state wide proposals on the ballot. Legal marijuana for sick folks and stem cell research. Both proposals passed, despite the best efforts of the religious right.

Today was another sunny warm day. The high temperature was 73. This is November in Michigan?

I had a 1000 appointment to get my stitches removed. It took about 5 minutes.

I took advantage of the nice weather to go kayaking. I put in on the Flat River at South County Line Road in Montcalm County. It was great.

When I got home Nancy reminded me that we were going to a paper product sale. The annual sale is held in the factory of Designer-Designer. The sale started at 5:30. We got there at 5 and the line was already a block long. I held the bag as Nancy purchased various paper items. I felt out of place because the crowd was about 98% female. We spent 1 hour at the sale.

The news this evening was all about the election. It was nice to hear all the positive reactions overseas. The last time we had young children in the White House was when JFK was president.

I did predict that the election would be decided by young people (young being the age of my children). Young people voted and major changes were made. The USA is no longer an euro-centered nation. I think this is good. Now just bring the troops home.

Tuesday November 4, 2008

Election Day! The day started warm and sunny. I cannot recall the weather on any of the previous 13 elections I took part in . I have voted for 7 winners.

I decided to ride my road bike this morning. My front brake seized up and I took a tumble. I have decided that the best bike brake is the old fashioned coaster brake, like on my retro. I think I pulled a muscle in my rib cage. I am amazed at how fragile I have become.

Everyone at the MAC was talking about the election. I think the turnout will be huge. This is good for our democracy. Everyone is participating.

It was such a nice warm day I decided to cut the grass. I set the cutter blade up to 3". It took 1.5 hours to complete the cutting. Usually it takes over 2 hours.

Tonight Nancy and I will watch the returns. I am interested if the Dems reach 60 in the senate. If this happens beware of the unions. They will get legislation that puts small firms (like mine) out of business.

I was sorry to hear about BO's grandmother. It was interesting to read about the greyhound bus tour she took BO on. They visited Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and other western points of interest. I don't know if any of my kids have ever been on a greyhound bus. Grandma sounds real cool.

Monday November 3, 2008

I love the end of DST because now my ride to the MAC does not require a light. The weather guy is very confused. We had brilliant sunshine and warm temperatures (60+) today, November 3. The outdoor patio at the Kava House was full.

After running several errands I headed for Reeds Lake. The lake was smooth. I love to paddle on the lake this time of year because all of the docks have been taken in and I can get close to shore. Also there are no jet skis or pleasure boaters.

We had rain last night so it was too wet to rake leaves or cut the grass. Tomorrow Nancy and I will work in the yard.

Election day eve has finally arrived. I can remember in 1948, Dick Kurrash, a cool high school guy (mayors son), showed us 10 year old kids his big bottle of red pop. Dick said that every time he heard about a vote for Dewey he would take a swig. I don't think he finished the bottle. Did you know Dewey was from Owosso, MI and a graduate of UM?

Although Nancy and I have voted we are very interested in some local races. So like everyone else in the USA we will be watching the returns. I will be especially interested to see if California votes to eliminate small houses for egg laying chickens.

Sunday November 2, 2008

Ah the end of DLT, we got an extra hour of sleep. We headed for the MAC at 0745. Nancy went swimming but because of my stitches I could not swim, so I used the recumbent bike.

We did not need groceries at Meijers so we headed right home. Nancy fixed poached eggs on toast. After breakfast I read the newspaper and then took my nap.

I did take a 3 mile walk after the nap. This evening we will watch 60 minutes and probably head for bed early. Sunday is still a day of rest?

I am glad DST came to an end. It was so dark in the morning that I had to use my bike lights. I hope that I will now be travelling in broad daylight.

2 more days left in the silly season. Like every one in the US, I will be glad to have the election over with. Why doesn't my spell check work? Probably a commie plot.

Saturday November 1, 2008

Another unseasonably warm day. After a big breakfast at the Brandywine, I loaded up the kayak and headed for the Grand River. I put in at Lowell and paddled upstream 2 hours and downstream 1 hour. The day was perfect and the river was like glass. I did not see any mammals but did see plenty of waterfowl.

When I got home Nancy was busy getting ready for this evenings dinner party. She was out of cream cheese so I mounted my bike and headed for D&W to purchase said cheese.

I did watch a part of the UM game. It was the wrong part because I saw Purdue take the lead for good. Speaking of Purdue, my Grandfather Scott had an uncle who taught at Purdue in the late 1800s. It was intended that when my Grandfather finished high school around 1892 that he would head for Purdue. However, my Grandfather contacted pneumonia when he was 17. The doctor told him that he should find work in the woods because it would be good for his lungs. Grandpa headed for the clear air of Minnesota and started working for a lumber company and eventually had his own company and sawmill. My father was born in Virigina, Mn, the location of the sawmill. The mill was in operation until around 1916 when the supply of timber ran out. They returned to the family farm at Hubbard Lake, Michigan around 1917.

Nancy's dinner was to start at 6:30. At 6:27 the first couple arrived and at 6:33 everyone was in attendance. I thought being late was fashionable?

The dinner was a success. A good time was had by all. Like most old folks we just sat around and talked.

Friday October 31, 2008

Halloween. I hate Halloween. The basic premise of asking a stranger to give you a treat is not a good example.

The day was warm and sunny. I went kayaking this afternoon on the Rogue River near Rockford. I was surprised that the leaves are nearly gone. The up side to this is that my visibility is greatly increased. I saw homes along the shore that I had never seen before. Fall kayaking is great because all the boaters are gone. I did not see another soul on my 2 hour paddle.

The kids started at 6 PM. I gave out over 120 treats. I thought we would have many more because of the nice weather. I was pleasantly surprised that most of the kids were accompanied by an adult. Trick or Treating is a 6 to 8 event. At exactly 8 I ran out of tootsie pops and candy bars. Great timing.

I remember the first time we went T/T at 1555. It was 1973 and Tasha, DSL and I went with JK and Mollie. It was very warm. The sidewalks were jammed with Dads and their kids. Moms stayed home to give out the treats. We had been in the house for only a couple of weeks and I was not familiar with the neighborhood. I think DSL, Tasha and Dad were very impressed. This is our 35th year at 1555.

Thursday October 30, 2008

The temperature was in the mid 20's this morning. I am still running instead of using the erg machine. I ran 7K this morning. I mailed Nancy's ballot today so voting is complete at our household.

Nancy had a hospital guild meeting this morning. It was a brunch so she brought me home a piece of cake.

After lunch we headed for Costco. We restocked our mouthwash and dishwasher soap supply.

Nancy is an Ottawa Hills Neighborhood block captain, so this PM we delivered the newsletter. After we completed the deliveries it was brass polishing time. We polished the brass table and stool. I washed the kitchen window and the side door windows. We are nearly ready for our Saturday Night dinner.

It was a sunny fall day. The temperature reached the low 50's this afternoon. A one of a kind day. I celebrated by taking a 3 mile walk.

It is Thursday so for dinner we headed to "Great Lakes Shipping". I had a beer (22 oz) and French dip sandwich. Nancy had the sesame chicken salad. With our coupon it cost $19.50, including tip. In these tough economic times, we must watch our pennies.

I am writing this blog from Nancy's computer. I cannot figure out why the Internet is not available on my computer.

Wednesday October 29, 2008

At 0730, I headed for the Dematology Center to have a small basal cell removed. It took Dr Mary about 20 minutes to cut out the spot and stitch it up (5 stitches). I had breakfast at Marie Catrib's. I had their world famous oatmeal. It was not very good. I rate it a C-.

I stopped by the office to get caught up on all the projects and future work. It is not as grim as reported by the press. I also answered all questions about the failing UM football program.

This afternoon I loaded up the retro and headed for Riverside Park. I rode my bike to Rockford. The highlight of trip was my near collision with a deer. It takes 1 hour to get to Rockford and 1 hour back ( I timed it).

I use to watch "Hardball with Chris Matthews" but I get very tired of Matthews. Lately I have been watching CNBS. I like Larry Kudlow. He had Jack Welch on his show tonight and Welch gave his opinion of the BO tax plan. He really thinks BO is bad for business. I somewhat agree. The unions are pushing for non-secret ballots in union elections. I strongly disagree with non-secret ballots. I would not like some union thug telling me how to vote. The secret ballot is a cornerstone of our democracy.

I did not watch BO's 1/2 hour commerical. As I mentioned earlier I have already voted. I did not vote for any left hander.

On a lighter note, Nancy and I were very happy when Veronica told us about her being pregnant. I am sure her mother is also very happy. Babies are great.

The earliest presidential election that I remember was the 1948 Dewey/Truman election. My grandmother Hughes was very conservative and thought the world would end if Truman got elected. Every evening she listened to Fulton Lewis Jr on the radio. He had a 15 minute radio show. FL could be compared to Rush Limbaugh. Grandmother thought he was great. Of course he was also very conservative.

Tuesday October 28, 2008

It was cold this morning. I had to wear my lined pants for my bike ride to the MAC. I did not go to the Kava House this AM because I had an early lunch with John Kraus. John worked for me at Kent County. He has been self employed for over 20 years. We had a good time.

In keeping with the cold weather I purchased a new snow shovel. It was a cheap plastic model at Meijers. They are the best shovels. You use them for a year and then buy a new one at the start of a new snow season. I also purchased some filters for the furnace. To celebrate the cold weather I took a 3 mile walk.

Nancy cooked boneless pork chops with dressing for dinner. It was great. Gas was $2.67 a gallon today.

It is Tuesday night so we watched NCIS. NCIS is the only show I watch regularly. Tomorrow Dr Mary will remove my basal cell spot. I have to be at the DRs office at 0730.

Monday, October 27, 2008

Monday October 27, 2008

Another cool windy day. I had to modify my routine because my spill from my bike has caused some back problems. So I decided to forgo my morning 5 K on the erg machine. It was raining when I headed for the MAC. I wore my super duper Nike rain pants. To satisfy my 40 minutes of aerobics I ran 4.2 miles.

After my morning visit to the Kava House I headed to the East GR library to catch up on some reading, Field and Stream, Runner's World and a bike magazine. Lunch was a peanut butter and honey sandwich, a hard boiled egg and an apple.

This afternoon I cleaned out my dresser. I have a large penny collection. I decided to roll them and much to my surprise I had $10. To celebrate I took a 3 mile walk.

Not much on TV tonight so I am going early to bed. I will read several pages of my current book, "Cold Mountain". I just finished "Shibumi" by Trevanian it was recommended by Esquire as a great summer read. It was terrible. I gave it a F. It was even worse than Grisham's "The Appeal".

Sunday October 26, 2008

Sunday is swim day. Nancy and I got to the MAC when it opened at 0800. We swam 45 minutes.

The day started cloudy and mild. As the day progressed it because very windy. This evening it started to rain and snow is predicted for the morning.

After the swim we did our weeks shopping at Meijers. Nancy had to buy a lot of stuff for our dinner party on Saturday. We are having seven people over.

After my nap Nancy and I went to a battery store to get a battery (what else) for her garage door opener. We stopped at the mall so I could look for a vest to wear under my coats this winter. No success.

I went for a short walk, 45 minutes. The colors are great but if the wind keeps up the leaves will be gone in a day or two.

We had hamburgers for dinner and then watched the news and 60 minutes. It is early to bed because next week will be busy. Eight more days and the silly season will be over. I think both JM and BO have run out of gas.

Saturday, October 25, 2008

Saturday October 25, 2008

The day started dark, cool and rainy. It remained that way all day.

I purchased a NYT at D&W. $1.50 for a newspaper! However, it is the only paper that has good international reporting. The Detroit Free Press is small by comparison. I think all newspaper are feeling pinched. The Grand Rapids Press which has no competition was absolutely tiny today.

After breakfast I headed to the MAC to give blood. After answering a zillion questions, blood pressure tests, the nurse pricked my finger and tested the blood. I was told that my iron level was too low, 34 vs 38. So for the third straight time I cannot give blood. I think my blood letting days are over.

It was still raining after my rejection so I ran a few errands. I have been looking for some warm winter clothes. I had no luck today. I will purchase the clothes online. Online is not in my 1956 dictionary.

My back has been bothering me today and I can not determine the cause. Was it my tumble from my retro yesterday? Did I use the ERG machine improperly? Is my dead lift form wrong?

For exercise I walked around Reeds Lake. It took me 2 hours.

For dinner Nancy and I took a coupon and headed for Russ's. I had the perch dinner and Nancy had prime rib. The entire bill (with the coupon) was $ 10.50.

I am watching the PSU/OSU game. I am pulling for PSU.

Since MSU won today I think my mother would have to prepare my Dad's favorite meals for the next week. Oh, what an idle mind remembers.

Friday, October 24, 2008

Friday October 24, 2008

It was a cold rainy day in GR. Sounds like I am writing the great American novel. I wore my rain gear for my ride to the MAC. I got careless trying to mount a curb in my retro. I took a tumble. No damage done.

It was pouring when I left the MAC for the Kava House. My rain gear kept me dry and warm.

This PM I stayed up in my office all afternoon and caught up on my reading. It was very relaxing.

This evening Nancy and I went to a neighborhood TGIF. I got the opportunity to talk with all our neighbors and sample some good food. We left at 9. I must get to bed so I will be well rested for my blood letting tomorrow. Go Blue.

Thursday, October 23, 2008

Thursday October 23, 2008

Today was sunny, windy and cool. The morning routine was normal. I did sign up to give blood Saturday morning.

This afternoon I waited around for the furnace repair man. He arrived around 2 and performed a preventative maintenance check. Everything was normal so we are set for another winter.

Tasha gave me a bike frame and I have been trying to find parts to make me a super-duper city bike. I stopped by my favorite lawn mower and bike repair shop to see about buying a coaster brake assembly.

A coaster brake was the only brake system on bikes when I was a boy. They are still being made for fat tire bikes but are hard to find. A coaster brake works by pedalling backwards. The brake is located in the rear wheel hub. The beauty of the coaster brake is that the entire assembly is within the wheel hub with no exposed part. The brake lasts forever. The shop owner said he knows nothing about bikes and the repair man only works mornings. All questions fell on deaf ears.

So instead of pedalling home with a coaster brake I decided to relieve my frustrations with a ride around Reeds Lake. Despite the high winds it was a great day for a bike ride. We are losing tree leaves rapidly. Next week the trees will be bare.

Nancy and I went to Great Lakes Shipping for dinner. The place was empty so we got a seat near the fire place. I hope the lack of customers is not caused by the bad economy.
