Saturday December 24, 2011

Wow, Christmas Eve already. Did you know that in my 73 Christmas Eve's I have spent only two away from family. I was very lonely on those two occasions. This morning Nancy and I slept in. We got up about 0730. We had breakfast at the Cheri Inn. It was very good.

When we got home I started packing. I was 1/2 complete when I got a call that my AT bike had been repaired. I got in the C2 and headed to the shop. My bike is now ready for winter riding. Speaking of winter we finally got a thin covering of snow. Snow makes it look like Christmas. Although it is now 1500 and most of the snow is gone.

I have a bill to pay so I will walk to the post office. I also need to get my 30 in today. I finished packing and was surprised to get everything I need into one small suitcase. Nancy is fixing hamburgers for dinner tonight. I earlier stopped by D&W and got some coleslaw. D&W was jammed. Everyone must need one more thing for the Holiday meal.

I will watch some football and then we will head to bed early because 0430 comes early. I want to wish all readers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Friday December 23, 2011

Friday already! I got up with the 0600 alarm. Today I begin winding down so I will be fresh when we start our trip. I did everything at 2/3. I thought that the streets might be icy this morning but a quick check indicated that they were dry. I got on the retro and pedaled to the MAC. I ended up at the Kava House. Both the WSJ and the DFP had articles on Detroit's money problems. The problem is extremely serious. Detroit has significantly more debt than they have assets. By example, Grand Rapids has $0.35 in debt for every $1 in assets. I also read articles on the problems in Syria and Iraq. The nightly news does not report on these problem areas. Most of NBC's news is now fluff.

I got home before noon a record for me. I just started having lunch when Nancy walked in. She had been to the beauty shop. She really looks good.

Tonight we are going to Great Lakes Shipping and then to Kohl's. Nancy wants me to look at a coffee pot. Ours has been acting up.

At 1700 we got in the Taurus and headed to GLS. The place was jammed. Last minute Christmas parties. We did buy a coffee pot at Kohl's. We ended the evening reading the GRP and watching some news.

December 22, 2011

Happy Solstice! Good news although today we have exactly 9 hours of daylight the days will start getting longer. It was still very mild this morning. I rode the retro to the MAC. Today was test day. I obtained a PB in the 2K row by hitting 9'51" and a year's best time in the mile of 9'19". I did not time myself in the 750 yard swim. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. I said I was not going to the Kava House till spring because it is so cold. Old habits die hard. I spent a lot of time talking to several folks at the KH so I did not get home until 1315.
I get very cold when I ride my bike. I think all the lotion I put on in the winter contributes to my heat loss. Does anyone agree? After lunch I took a quick nap, 30' to warm up. Nancy and I are going to the 1700 movie this afternoon. It is a good day for a movie. I think that if you took an outdoor photo at noon today the flash would go off. The movie we selected was "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". Based on popularity of the book we thought the movie would be very crowded. It has only been out two days. Much to our surprise the theater was nearly empty. It was a good movie. I said good not great. For your interest Stockholm has only 6h35' of daylight in December.
The movie got out at 2000 and so we decided to go home and Nancy would cook a pizza. It was a good idea because the frozen pizza we had was great. We opened a bottle of wine and watched some TV and read the paper. We watched "Person of Interest" and at 2200 headed upstairs.

Wednesday December 21, 2011

Today is my easy day so I did not set the alarm. Nancy woke me up at 0715. I slowly got dressed and got on the retro and pedaled to Bill's. It was cold and damp but still above freezing. I had the weekday special and read my papers. Can I still call them papers if I read them electronically? The WSJ had an interesting article on Holland. Holland was one of the first proponents of the Euro. They are now having second thoughts. Are Europe's money problems solvable? I think so but it will take some political courage. Speaking of political courage, a recent Time had a very interesting article on Rhode Island's Treasurer and her successful effort to reform RI's public pension fund. She bucked the unions and the entrenched Democratic Legislature. She is also a Democrat. It was a very good article and shows that every problem has a solution if the right people are in charge.
In order to get some more exercise I changed my route home to include a trip around Reeds Lake. I had 12 miles on the odometer when I got home.
Nancy had a list of questions I was to ask the United/American folks at the airport. We had United tickets to Aruba but United put us on a American flight from GR to Chicago. I think I got most of her questions answered.
This afternoon I am cleaning off my desk and catching up on some reading. Nancy is working at the Gardens this afternoon. I recently found a letter dated 21DEC1961. I was writing my weekly letter home. I had been on Midway Island a little less than a month. I did mention in the letter that Midway was 836 acres. I was the Transportation Officer in the Public Works Department. I had 33 sailors and 8 civilians in my command. I told my Mother to watch Sgt Bilko on TV to see what running a motor pool was like. I think we had 200 sailors in the entire Public Works Department. The officer running the Department was Commander Tinklepaugh. (try singing the Mickey Mouse song using Tinklepaugh). Commander Tinklepaugh was a fire-breathing officer who came up through the ranks. As a mustang he could advance no higher. I really liked the guy. In fact I was known as Tinklepaugh's Ensign.
One of my duties was seeing that the garbage was picked up. I was also in charge of the dump. The other day the dump caught fire and the smoke was so intense they had to close the runway. The Transportation Dept was also responsible for maintaining every piece of equipment on the Island (325).

I mentioned that we are having a crime wave on Midway. Six sailors are in the Brig for kicking Gooney Birds. This is a no-no. Speaking of Gooney Birds I am also in charge of pest control. We have a sailor going around the island picking up dead birds. I wished Mom and everyone a Merry Christmas. This was my first Christmas away from home. I signed off by saying "remember that your son a leader of men (garbage that is) is on some remote island, protecting the Nation in their time of need and helping America progress on the NEW FRONTIER". I think this is sarcasm.
I took a 1.5 mile walk to end the afternoon. We had a light dinner and then read the GRP and watched the news. We were in bed by 2100.

Tuesday December 20, 2011

It is still very warm for this time of year (above freezing). I get on the retro and pedal to the MAC. Today I did my tri: row, run and swim. I was done by 1000. I was going to Breton Village because the Kava House yesterday was very cold. I thought better of it and gave the Kava House another chance. The Kava House was cold. I might have to discontinue my visits until it warms up. I just checked GR's daily averages for temperature and we have been above average for the past week. In fact it does not look like snow until next week. All the big storms have been south of us. The shortest day of the year is Thursday. We will have exactly 9 hours of daylight. Today we have 9h01'.

After lunch I started running some errands. My first errand was to the LMCU to renew a CD. I am getting 0.6% on 9 month CD. Big deal. I then stopped at the GR Bike Co. I am getting a front wheel bike on my bike. This brake in addition to my coaster brake will give me better stopping power. I stopped at the MAC to exchange running shorts. My final stop was at Macatawa Bank on Burton to put all our valuable papers in a safe deposit box.

Nancy just called so I have to go down to dinner. Do not want to be late for dinner. Nancy fixed spaghetti for dinner. I also had several glasses of wine. We read the GRP and watched NCIS and 1/2 of the LA version. Bedtime was at 2135.

Monday December 19, 2011

I get up with the 0559 alarm and get ready for the MAC. It is unseasonably warm today so I am riding the retro to the MAC. I had trouble sleeping last night but I was surprising spry this morning. My times in the row and run were very good. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. I encountered a very strong west wind. I read several articles about the dictator of Korea dying. I cannot believe that his under 30 son will have a smooth transition. 2011 has been the downfall of many long serving dictators. I hope the world will be a better place.

I had a quick lunch and then headed upstairs. I spent several hour catching up on my reading. At 1600 I took a 2 mile walk. Right now I am watching the Swedish version of the "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". This is the first time I have watched a movie on my TV screen. The picture is quite small. Can I enlarge it? The movie is in Swedish with English subtitles. It is very good.
We had our normal Monday light dinner. We started the Monday and Wednesday light dinners when Nancy was teaching. On those days she had to work late so in order to get her exercise in she took a class at the MAC. I was on my own so of course I did not fix anything I just had a bowl of cereal.

After dinner I read the GRP and watched some news. I then headed upstairs and watched the end of the movie. I hope the English version which comes out this week is as good as the Swedish version. I headed to bed abut 2130.

Sunday December 18, 2011

Today is blog number 1,161. I cannot believe that I have kept this up so long. I really enjoy writing. I think that the great enjoyment I got from reading my great-grandfather Sanborn's 1938 diary is giving me incentive. I also enjoyed my grandmother Hughes diary of her 1927 European trip. I hope my great-grand kids will be able to see what life was like in 2011.

The alarm goes off at 0656. We get right up and head to the MAC. Nancy and I had the pool to ourselves for most of our swim. When swimming the crawl (freestyle) I usually breathe every two strokes. I breathe on my left side. I have been told that good swimmers breathe every three strokes and alternate sides. I have been trying the three stroke method with little success. Nancy takes a breath ever four strokes, same side. I have been trying the four stroke method and find that it is easier than 3 strokes. Today using the 4 stroke method I took a minute off my 1500 yard time.

Since we are leaving next week for vacation Nancy said we did not have to go shopping. Instead we went right home after the MAC. I did go to the Kava House to get us some coffee. I also filled up the Taurus. Gas was $3.14. Nancy fixed her world famous scrambled eggs with waffles. It was very good.
I took my Sunday nap and after the nap I took a 3 mile walk. It was sunny with the temperature near 40, perfect weather for a walk. We are having soup, butternut squash, and hot dogs for dinner. We will watch 60 minutes and finish the GRP.

It is now 1728 and I am spending time writing this blog. I can't believe that I am not watching the Lions game. It must be part of the aging process.

Saturday December 17, 2011

The alarm goes off at 0630. I get up and tell Nancy it is morning and then I go back to bed. I got up about 0800. It was snowing this morning and we had a dusting of snow on all surfaces. The temperature was 29⁰. I decided to go for a walk. I walked around Reeds Lake and stopped at the Kava House to read my papers and drink coffee. I also had a scone. After the Kava House I walked home. I walked a total of seven miles.

Today I am making our annual contributions to various charities. I have been keeping an excel spreadsheet from past year's contributions so I don't forget or short change anyone. I think it is great that we are fortunate enough to be able to contribute to good causes.

Nancy and I had dinner at Olga's in Gas Light Village. Olga's is never very crowded so we did not have to wait. We watched a movie on TV. It was the sequel to the DeVinci Code. I thought it was better than the first one. I did not go to bed until 2245.

Yesterday I mentioned about my finding a job on the last Friday before Christmas. I also mentioned my future boss, 5'5", 250#, cigar smoking Marv. Marv Nacheim (sp?) was a very interesting person. Marv was born in a German farming community in Oregon. He got a football scholarship to Stanford. Marv was a blocking back in the single wing formation. Marv's football was interrupted by WW II. He was a bomber pilot. Marv was shot down over Germany. He safely parachuted and because he could speak and read German he was able to walk to Holland. The Dutch resistance picked him up and a USA sub eventually picked him up off the Dutch shore. Not many WW II folks left who can tell these stories. Charles McClandess was a great place to work. In fact I modeled my own company after their business plan.

I got my 30 in today. I hope you did too.

Friday December 16, 2011

I had a problem getting up with the alarm this morning. It must be Friday. It is still above freezing so I rode my bike to the MAC. My 5 speed is still a 1 speed. I was going to take it easy this morning and row only 2K instead of 4 and run 1 mile instead of 1.5. There was a young fellow on the rowing machine next to me and he was really screaming. I tried to at least try to get near his speed (fat chance). Anyway I set a PB for the 2K. I rowed it in 8'54". This time is below the average and median times for my age group. The young man is a collegiate rower for GVSU. His time in the 2K is 6'34". After my row I ran 1 mile in 9'30" which is my best time this year. (I once ran a marathon in 2h57', 6'45"). After the MAC I headed to Breton Village to read the WSJ and DFP. I am so saturated with political stories that I usually do not read any articles about politics.

I got home about 1215 and had a quick lunch. After lunch I loaded the AT up and headed to the GR Bike Co. They are going to fix my 5 speed. When I got home I told Nancy I was going to take a nap. About 30' into the nap and I get a call from my AHS friend Tom Cassel. We talked for about 90 minutes. I always liked talking to Tom.

Tonight Nancy and I are going to Brann's for dinner. Brann's was not very crowded. We each had a big salad. Brann's has the best salad in town. When we got home I immediately fell asleep watching the news. Nancy and I were both tired and headed to bed at 2030.

Nancy and I were talking last night about our time in CA. I asked if she remembered about my job hunting in December 1965. My original CA employer, Watson Seely Clifford III, had left town in the middle of the night in late Nov. He still owed me about 4 weeks pay. I had to get a job because Nancy was pregnant and we had almost depleted our "go to hell fund". It was about the last Friday before Christmas and I had spent the day making cold calls on local engineering firms. I had no success and was very discouraged and tired. A 1600 I decided to make one last call. I arrived at Charles McClandess and Company, 1020 Corporation Way, Palo Alto and asked if they were hiring. The secretary said she did not think so but I stuck my resume in her face anyway. She took it walked into another office. To my surprise she came back and told me that Marv would see me in 10 minutes. When I finally got in to see Marv I encountered a 5'5" 250 pound cigar smoking dynamo. He looked at the resume and asked what I wanted for pay. I said $3.80 per hour. He grunted and said when could I start. I said anytime. Marv looked at me and said be here at 0800 Monday. I was elated and when I got home I asked Nancy guess what just happened. She said you got a job. I guess I had that happy look. What a Christmas present. And that is my 1965 Christmas story.

Thursday December 15, 2011

The alarm goes off at 0559 and I head downstairs to get Nancy her coffee. The thermometer says it is 57⁰. Eventually we are going to pay. I got on my AT with the new super duper snow tires. Kentwood Cycle did not put my 5 speed back together right and I had only one speed. Being Thursday I performed my tri today. I usually feel pretty good on Thursday because on Wednesday I take it easy. I read my papers at Breton Village today. The WSJ is really worried about the banks in Europe. For some reason European banks are not high on my worry list.

I got home at 1230. This afternoon we are expecting the Maytag repair man. Remember those commercials. He has my cell number and called about 1300 and said he was on his way. Nancy and I were surprised but he was able to fix our 24 year old washer. He said that our washer was very well made and if we bought a new one we would be lucky if it lasted 10 years. After the repair man left I went outside and tried to fix the 5 speed on the bike. I could not do it so I loaded it up and headed back to Kentwood Cycle. They fiddled with it for about 30 minutes and said it was fixed. It was raining to hard for me to test it so I headed home. When I got home the rain had stopped so I took a spin. Guess what! It still does not work. I am stuck in 3rd.

The temperature is suppose to drop to below freezing this evening. It might snow this weekend. Tonight Nancy and I are heading to Great Lakes Shipping for dinner. Tonight we will watch a "Person of Interest" and then head to bed. I wanted to take a nap this afternoon but got sidetracked by the washing machine and my bike.

Wednesday December 14, 2011

The alarm goes off at 0559 and I get right up because I have to make the 0700 Breakfast Club. First I have to get Nancy her morning coffee. It was raining and pitch black when I headed to BC. The food was especially good this morning. The speaker today was the publisher of the GRP. He explained why the GRP is only going to have home delivery on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The electronic age is impacting print media in a major way. The majority of folks now get their news via TV or the internet. The impact of smart phones is immense. The GRP is not going away they are offering a complete newspaper online. This includes the funnies. I was very impressed with the presentation. They seem to have a handle on how to survive in the electronic age.

The average age of the BC is probably around 80 so when they were asked how many had smart phones, electronic readers or ipads, not many hands were raised. I think most of the BC did not like the new changes. I think the GRP is getting ahead of the curve. Change is inevitable. Live with it old people.

After BC I headed to the Kava House to read the WSJ and DFP on my Kindle. I did not finish the papers because I only had an hour on the parking meter. When I got home I finished my Christmas cards. I worked on the computer until about 1330 when I headed downtown to attend the GRBA monthly meeting. The GRBA is winding down. We do not have any new projects. An announcement was made at today's meeting about the big downsizing of the city's engineering department. They are going down from 34 people to 23. It was a kind of grim.

When I got home I had a message that my bike was ready. I got in the C2 and headed to Kentwood Cycle. I had the shop put on a chain guard and studded snow tires. I am ready for winter.

Tonight we will have cereal and maybe if I am nice Nancy will let me have a Christmas cookie. We have been receiving fruit and chocolate Christmas packages from relatives and friends. Nancy said she will limit my intake. However, I did sneak an apple while she was working at the Gardens. It was very good. Tonight we will read today's GRP. After the first of the year we will not get a paper copy on Wednesdays. I will have to read the paper online. No big deal.

It has rained all day. So far I have not been able to get my 30' in. I think I will try and take a walk around1900.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Tuesday December 13, 2011

I got up with the 0600 alarm. No rain is forecast for today so I rode my retro bike to the MAC. The temperature was in the mid 30s so I had a pleasant ride. I did the T/TH tri today. I really had a slow swim phase. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. The WSJ had several stories on the European debt. Will they ever get the mess cleaned up? I think the USA's debt problem is as serious as Europe.

Nancy had a brunch this morning at the Cascade Country Club. I got home at 1230 and Nancy walked in right after me. Nancy needed to go to Costco so I gave her some money to buy me a wool long sleeve tee shirt. I already have two but they are so light and warm that I wanted another. Costco from time to time has some great clothing items at a bargain basement prices.

I spent the early part of the afternoon reading the agenda and data for tomorrow's GRBA meeting. Kentwood Cycle called this afternoon and said the chain guard I ordered had arrived. I loaded up the AT and headed to the store. I told them to install the guard and also to put two new snow tires on the bike. I am getting ready for winter.

I am now starting to write my Christmas Cards. This year I am going to type them because my handwriting has really deteriorated. We decided to bite the bullet and call the Maytag repair man to look at the washer. He is coming Thursday.

Tonight we are having turkey sandwiches and soup. We will read the GRP and watch NCIS. I have to get to bed early because I have Breakfast Club and a GRBA meeting tomorrow. Must be fresh for these meetings. I got my 30' in today did you?

Monday, December 12, 2011

Monday December 12, 2011

Monday morning and the alarm goes off at 0559. I get right up because today is a busy day. After my normal at-home routine I get in the C2 and head to the Ford dealer. Nancy is taking her car in to get some work done. The driver side seat warmer does not work, the Taurus needs its 4,000 mile oil change and we are getting the clock fixed. Not real big items but going without a seat warmer can be a hardship.

I drove Nancy to the MAC and gave her the keys to the C2. She will go to the hospital after the MAC. I will walk home. I was done with my Monday routine before 1000, a record for me. I walked over to Breton Village and bought a coffee and read the papers in the Mall. The grandparents keep bringing the grandkids to see the model train display. It took me over 1.5 hours to read the papers. Why do I read so slow? I got home at 1300.

After a quick lunch I drive Nancy back to the Ford dealer so she can pick up her car. It only cost $31 because most of the work was under warranty. I drove over to Dunham Sports because they had a picture of a UM sweat shirt in yesterday's paper. The sweat shirt only had a small M and this is what I wanted. I do not want a shirt that has MICHIGAN on it I want only a M. Dunham's did not have any. I accused them of false advertising.

After my disappointing trip to Dunham's I headed to the Comcast store on 36th Street. Our remote is not working. They took the old one and gave me a new one. My next stop was the eye doctor. I picked up a year's supply of contacts. He changed my prescription and so I needed new ones. I really like the new prescription.

My final stop was at my favorite hardware store, Rylee's. I returned a string of outdoor Christmas lights. I did not need the lights because I only had to change a fuse in the existing string to get them to work. With my refund I bought two mouse traps. Nancy wants to set one in the garage. She has not seen a mouse this year but she is sure they will invade the garage when it gets colder. When I got home I took my road bike to the basement and brought up the fat tired retro. I hung up my AT bike and will use my retro during the winter. I expect a call from the bike store telling me that the chain guard for my AT has arrived. I am getting a chain guard because I don't like wearing a sissy pant protector.

Tonight we are having cereal. We will watch some TV and read the GRP. I hope to be in bed before 2130.

Sunday December 11, 2011

Sunday morning and we kept to our normal routine by going swimming at the MAC. After the MAC we headed to Meijer's for our weekly supplies. I filled the Taurus up and gas was $3.33. Nancy fixed her world famous scrambled eggs for breakfast this morning. I had mine on a waffle. I did take my afternoon nap.

At 1530 Nancy and I headed to the Moleski's for the Book Club's Annual Christmas get together. Husbands were invited and 3 attended making a total of 8. We had plenty to drink and the main menu consisted of Nancy's Waldorf Salad, grilled potatoes and vegetables and kielbasa. For dessert we had candy cane ice cream pie and chocolate candy. It was very good. Everyone was in a festive mood and the conversation was about family and old times. No politics.

We got home at 2000 and I had time to finish the Sunday paper before going to bed. I did watch part of the football game.

Saturday December 10, 2011

Saturday morning and it was 22⁰ at 0700. This morning the roads are too icy to ride my bike so I decided to take a walk. I walked around Reeds Lake and on my way home stopped at the Kava House. I bought my coffee and then a scone. They have great scones. I read the WSJ and DFP. I get so mad at both political parties. I really think the President is very divisive. The proposed extension of the holiday on paying the SS tax is really bad. If SS is suppose to be in bad shape, why deprive it of needed funds.
There are better ways to get the economy moving. I see some Senators in both parties are beginning to say : is this smart? Speaking of money the hubris of the ex Governor of NJ who drove MF Global into the ground is deplorable. After getting worked up reading the papers I took a relaxing walk home. My walk covered 7 miles.

Our washing machine has been acting up. At first we thought that it got out of level and we have re-leveled the machine. Today I moved the machine out and spent some time getting the level just right. It worked ok for several loads but I think we must call the Maytag repair man. Nancy found the original bill for the washer. We bought the machine in 1987. I think at 24 years the machine might have reached the end of its useful life. I called the store where we bought the machine and they said that they still can get parts for the machine. Stay tuned.

I spent several hour going through some family records that I keep downstairs. I found that my great grandparents on the Hughes side were born in Wexford, Ireland. My great grandmother Scott whose maiden name was Rayborn had roots in Edinburgh, Scotland. My great grandfather McTavish was born in Campbeltown, Scotland came to Canada, Wallaceburg, Ont, in 1840. He attended the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical Institute and graduated in 1866. After graduation he moved to Alpena.

At 1730 Nancy and I got in the Taurus and headed to Marco's. We met the Namey's for dinner. The place was jammed. Even though we had reservations we had to sit in the bar area. After dinner we drove to the Namey's for dessert. We had a very enjoyable evening.

December 10, 1944, Lawson YMCA, Chicago: My Dad was drafted as a civilian to work for the Army in the Chicago area. The military needed civil engineers to maintain all the bases. My dad was too old for the military but he could work as a civilian. It was a Sunday and dad said he was sorry he did not write yesterday because before he could start a letter he fell asleep and did not wake up until 0430 Sunday. Dad was working six days a week. He got off work Saturday and walked around downtown Chicago. The stores were all closed but the window displays were all filled with Christmas stuff. Dad wanted to come home between Christmas and New Years but could only get Christmas and the week before off. He said that his boss was being difficult but he thinks it is because his son, a pilot, was shot down over Germany. They do not know if a got his chute open in time.

Apparently the phone system is very limited. Dad has his reservation in to make a call to Alpena on Wednesday evening. Dad mentioned that he will try to fix the furnace when he gets home. He thinks it is a damper problem. He signed off saying he could not wait for next Sunday when he would be home. Dad wrote every day and my mother saved all his letters.

Friday December 9, 2011

The weatherman was right we had about 1/2" of snow last night. I shoveled the drive and walk using my new super wide shovel. We got in the Taurus and headed to the MAC. I started rowing at 0800. After the MAC I walked over to Breton Village Mall, bought a coffee at the Omelet Shop and sat in the Mall and read the WSJ and DFP. I sat by the model RR display that is set up in the MALL. I was amazed at how many grandparents bring the grandkids to see the train. The place was crowded. The Mall also has a Santa. After reading the papers I walked home.

After a quick lunch Nancy and I got in the Taurus and headed to Costco. I bought some eye drops and Nancy bought lotion. Costco was crowded and they had a lot of free samples. After Costco we headed to Staples. I bought a color printer cartridge for Nancy's printer. While I was in Staples Nancy walked next door to Aldi's to buy cooking apples. Our final stop was the Ford dealership. A warning light went off telling us the tire pressure was low. We got this checked and also make an appointment for Monday morning. We have to get the car serviced and also the driver's seat warmer must be fixed.

Tonight we are going to the OHNA's monthly TGIF. The TGIF was well attended. Everyone must bring a dish. The neighbors went out of their way and prepared some very good holiday treats. When we visited Nancy's sister in the Finger Lakes area of NY we went wine shopping at the many wineries that surround the lake. We brought a bottle of Lameroux Creek wine to the party. It was very good. I wrote the name down to see if we can purchase it locally.

Thursday December 8, 2011

I got up with the alarm and did the usual at home routine. I think this might be the last day for awhile to ride my bike. The weather folks say snow is coming. The 2,000 meter row is the standard for indoor rowing. They have indoor 2,000 meter races all over the world. I checked on-line and saw the results for 121 folks in my age group (70-79). The average time was 9':18". The 50 percentile time was 8':58". Today, my time for the 2K was 9':01". I have some work to do to get to the 50 percentile time. I want to be able to do 8':30" by St Patrick's Day. We all need goals. When it came time to run I decided to time myself in the 1 mile run. My time was 9':30". I want to run 9' by St. Pat's Day. I did not check my time on my 750 yard swim this morning.

Missy and AJ plan to leave for Ohio about 1300. Nancy did not go to the MAC today so she could spend some time with the girls. Nancy did have to leave at 1200 to attend a tea. I wanted to be home by 1200 so I did not go to the Kava House. I sat in Breton Village Mall and read my papers. I got home by 1200. Missy, AJ and Ms P left for Ohio about 1345. I was sad to see them all leave.

I got my IRA check today and after the girls left I headed to the KCECU to deposit the check. I also stopped at Meijer's to buy some apples. I must have my daily apple.

For dinner Nancy and I headed to Great Lakes Shipping. After dinner we read the GRP and then watched "A Person of Interest". I headed upstairs at 2200.

Tuesday December 6, 2011

It was 32⁰ this morning but no snow so I rode my bike to the MAC. Being Tuesday I did my tri, 15' row, 1.5 mile run and 900 yard swim. I got an early start this morning and I was done and on my way to the Kava House by 0945. I started reading the WSJ when who should appear but AJ and Missy. I bought AJ a chocolate chip cookie and Missy a mocha. After we finished talking I got on the bike and pedaled home.

Nancy worked at the hospital this morning and she brought me a chocolate chip cookie. After lunch I took a short nap. I get chilled when I ride my bike on these cold days. I turn the electric blanket on full blast to warm up.

It is now 1500 and I must pause this blog so I can go to the eye doctor for my annual checkup. My eyes are ok. The doctor did change my contact prescription slightly. I will probably need cataract surgery next year.

After the eye doctor I came home and changed clothes. Tonight, 1730-1930, Nancy and I are attending a presentation on the new Japanese Gardens at Meijer's Garden. The Landscape Architect gave a preview of his design. It was very impressive. We got free food and drinks. Of course they also gave us some pledge cards. While Nancy and I were attending the presentation AJ and Missy were touring the Gardens and looking at all the Christmas decorations. The Gardens look great.

We got home about 2000. I wanted to watch NCIS but it was a rerun so I went on a 1.5 mile walk.

Monday December 5, 2011

It was in the mid 30s when I got on the bike and headed to the MAC. We have lucked out so far this year. The rest of the state has gotten snow but we have missed the bad storms. The MAC was empty when I got there at 0800 but soon filled up. I did the routine and then stopped at the bank on my way to the Kava House. Today in the WSJ I read several articles on energy and water. I got out my itouch and made some notes on some stocks I might buy. I think the company that comes up with an inexpensive desalination process will be a winner. It took awhile to read the papers so I did not get home until 1300.

After a quick lunch I headed outside to check my Christmas lights. Last night two big strings of lights went out. I thought I might have to replace them. However, I played with the connections and finally got everything working. The lights are now on a timer that goes on at 1730 and off at 2400.

I did take a short nap and then spent about 45 minutes filling out a big questionnaire from the DNA company. At 1730 Missy and AJ arrived. They are spending several days with us. Missy is also taking Ms P back with her. Nancy is fixing meatloaf for dinner tonight. It looks good. I got my 30 in today, did you?

Sunday, December 4, 2011

Sunday December 4, 2011

Ms P and I went out at 0430 and it was 52⁰. This is December? Nancy and I got up at 0700 and were in the MAC's pool at 0800. We both swam 1500 yards. After the MAC we followed Sunday tradition and headed to Meijer's. Gas today was $3.34. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast and instead of putting them on an English muffin she put them on a waffle. It was good.

I stayed up until the 3rd quarter of the UW/MSU game last night. I headed to bed when MSU went ahead by 8 points. I thought they were in control. What do I know?

It rained all last night. After my Sunday nap it was just sprinkling so I headed outside and put up some Christmas Lights. I decorated the two tall evergreens located on each side of the door. We are going to Aruba for Christmas but I thought our house looked very dark compared to our neighbors. Nancy had set up a small tree in our front window so I thought the outside lights would complement the tree. I got wet from all the moisture on the evergreens and had to change clothes.

Nancy is fixing hamburgers for dinner tonight. We will read the GRP and watch 60 minutes. I also will watch the first half of the Lions game.

Saturday December 3, 2011

Saturday morning and I slept in until 0730 (Ms P and I went out at 0430). It was raining when I walked outside so I put on my rain suit and pedaled to "Bill's". I had their "Super Breakfast". It was still raining after breakfast but I needed some exercise so I headed around Reeds Lake, with a stop at the ATM machine. When I got home I changed my wet socks.

We are having some problems with our washing machine. Nancy and I have leveled the machine several time to no avail. The machine moves during the spin cycle and then we have to re-level the machine. It is very frustrating. This morning I checked the level and make some adjustments.

Presently, 1448, I am upstairs in my office cleaning up my desk. I just bought another Heritage data base so that I can continue some family research. We have had such a nice fall that I could not bring myself to stay inside. I do expect the weather to change and actually look forward to staying inside. I have several inside projects to complete this winter.

Nancy's sister, Peg, called this afternoon and she brought me up to date on her family. Nancy was at the hospital the first time Peg called. She is now talking to Peg.

This afternoon I am making a purchase at LL Bean. I will then head to Martha' Vineyard, a local store, and buy a bottle of single malt scotch. The scotch, Springbank, is made in Campbeltown, Scotland, my great grandfather McTavish's home town.

I will end this afternoon with a 2 mile walk. We are staying home this evening and I will watch the UW/MSU game.

Friday December 2, 2011

It rained last night and the temperature this morning was at 32⁰. Before heading to the MAC I checked Mackinaw Road and found some icy spots. I decided not to take the bike and instead rode with Nancy to the MAC. I did my normal routine and when done I walked to the Breton Village Mall. I bought a coffee at the Omelet Shop and sat in the open area and read the papers. A model RR club has set up a Christmas display complete with a small village with bridges, tunnels and several beautiful trains. This is an annual event and the Mall was crowded with strollers and little kids watching the trains. It takes the RR club about a week to set up the display. I overheard one of the members saying that this is the last year they will set up. I guess all the members are over 80. The Mall also had Santa greeting all the kids. After the Mall I walked home.

Nancy had several large packages that had to be mailed so I loaded up the C2 and headed to the PO. After the PO I stopped by Scott Engineering to give some money for their "Adopt a Family" program. I talked to all the folks and was glad to hear that they have work going into the new year. I think the folks in Lansing will finally get some money for the highway agencies. I am an optimist.

For dinner we ate at Panera Bread. The place was crowded but we did not have to wait. We have enjoyed the food at Panera and it is one our favorite places when I don't require a beer. We spent the rest of the evening reading the GRP and watching some TV. At 2100 we headed upstairs.

I finally figured out how to get Word to work with the blog. It saves me time because I don't have to use my 1956 Websters.

Thursday December 1, 2011

Another day without snow which means I can take the bike. I bundled up and headed to the MAC. I did my tri today and once again I swam 900 yards. I am finding swimming easier on my old joints and think that it won't be too long before I stop running and start swimming daily. After the MAC I head to the Kava House. The sun was shining with little wind. A perfect day for a bike ride. It looks like the political powers in Detroit are finally getting serious about solving their money problems. It will take some political courage but they have little choice.

After lunch I was heading upstairs when I get a call from my old boss at Kent County, Dave Despres. Dave called to tell me that the JDRF was rated "A" as a charity. This rating means that the donations they receive is actually spent on research. We ended up talking about almost everything and I hung up after 90 minutes. There is no such thing as a short call with Dave.

I checked my email and then took a short nap. Tonight Nancy and I are attending a charity event at Meijer's Garden. It is their Christmas Gala, Black Tie optional. I wore just a plain old suit. Nancy looked great. There were 500 folks at the event. The Gardens looked spectacular with all the Christmas decorations. We got home at 2100 and were in bed by 2200.

Wednesday November 30, 2011

Breakfast club today and I get up at 0545. I was surprised but we had no snow last night. Todays speaker was from the MSU Med School. He spoke on their research efforts to understand and treat Parkinson's disease. It was very interesting. They are using adult stem cells for some treatment. It is promising. I read that they are also experimenting using stem cells to treat Type I diabetes.

After breakfast I head to the Kava House to read the papers. The WSJ wrote another article on how the USA is exporting petro products. I find this encouraging.

When I got home I walked Ms P around the block and then took a 5 mile walk. It is a beautiful day. Cool but we have sun and a blue sky. Tonight we are having cereal and then will watch a little TV and read the GRP. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day.

Tuesday November 29, 2011

We had all kinds of winter storm warnings up this morning. However, I took a chance and rode my bike to the MAC. It was cold and windy but no rain or snow. I increased my swimming distance from 750 yards to 900 yards. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House and still no rain/snow. After lunch I took a quick nap and then worked on the computer for several hours. At 1700 Nancy and I headed downtown. We are attending Les Miserables at DeVos Performance Hall. Before the play with are having dinner with the Horlings at the Bull's Head. It was good we had reservations because the place was full at 1730. We had a great meal at the reasonable price. The play started at 2130. The play was sold out and the only seats we could get were in the balcony. The play lasted 3 hour. Nancy really liked the play. We got home at 2300 and I watched the late evening news. The areas south and east of GR got 3"+ of snow. We did not get any snow.

November 29, 1961: On this day 50 years ago I wrote my first letter to my mother from Midway Island. It cost $0.04 to send a letter from Midway to Alpena. I had alway thought that I had Thanksgiving dinner, 1961, at the Officer's Club, Pearl Harbor. However, the letter indicates that I had dinner at the Officer' Club at Treasure Island. Treasure Island is located in SF Bay between SF and Oakland. I left for Hawaii on Saturday Nov 25. The plane left for Hawaii from Travis AFB. Travis is located NE of TI and is in Solano County. I arrived on Sunday. I spent 1 day at the BOQ, Pearl Harbor. I did take a bus to Waikiki Beach and walked around. On Monday I got was called a Log Flight to Midway. Log flights to Midway are on Monday and Friday. Before the flight I was paged and given a 45 pistol and a packet containing classified documents. Would you trust important documents to a greenhorn?I had to make sure these documents got to the Island safely. They made it.

I left Hawaii at 1000 and got to Midway at 1400. I told my mother that although Midway was small the streets are so crooked and winding that it appear larger. There are 3000 people on Midway. I commented on the Gooney birds. They were numerous and everywhere.

Midway is part of the Dew Line and its main mission is to support Early Warning Planes. These planes leave Midway and head to Alaska looking for the bad guys, Soviets. There are planes in the air 24/7.

I told Mom it was hot and humid but I had not been swimming. They were playing Christmas carols and I thought it was seemed out of place in a hot climate.

There are no single girls on the island but the Officer's Club has dances and the young single officers are invited to attend and watch. Big deal. Married officers and senior enlisted men can bring their wives to Midway. However, they must spend 18 months instead of 12 months.

I was asssigned to the Public Works Dept and given the job as Transportation Officier. There are 30 sailors in my Division. In addition we have 10 civilians. The civilians are assigned to Midway from Pearl Harbor on a 60 day rotation.

Every morning I am in charge of muster. The sailors line up in formation and are read the "Plan of the Day". I am also suppose to hold an inspection, weekly.

I wrote the letter in pencil. I noted several spelling errors. I also told mom I had read "A Nation of Sheep".

Monday November 28, 2011

Ms P and I went out at 0445 and it was cold. I set the alarm for 0600 and I got up with the alarm. The weather man said no rain until this evening. It was really dark when I left for the MAC at 0730. I put on an extra rear light. One can't be too careful with all the drivers talking on their cellphones. Most folks don't like Mondays but I think that I perform my best on Mondays. Two days rest is good for the body. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. I did not find anything new in the morning papers. I did talk to Jack Lensink, an old neighbor, at the Kava House. Jack brought me up to date on his recent bike trip in Holland, Belgium and France. He had a great time. After lunch I ran to the Lighting Center to get a special bulb for our kitchen light fixture. After the errand I got out the lawn mower and picked up some more leaves. The leaves really did not need to be picked up but I wanted to empty the mower's gas tank. I don't think it is a good idea to leave gas in the tank over the winter. I also put up the bird feeder. I read somewhere on how to squirrel proof your feeder using old CDs. I hope it works. We will have cereal tonight and then watch some TV. I have to be in bed before 2100 because tomorrow is a busy day. Right now it is 1700 and I just got a call from Meijer's that my eye medicine is ready. I will sign off. I did get my 30 in today, did you?

Sunday November 27, 2011

It has been a busy week and now I will play catch up. How come if the Lord rested on the seventh day, Sunday, that calenders have Sunday as the first day of the week? It should be the last day of the week, right? Thursday November 24, 2011, Thanksgiving Day, and Bob and Nancy slept in until 0700. Nancy was going to go to the MAC for a class and I decided to take a walk. I walked around Reeds Lake. I did 7 miles in two hour, a good time for me. As I was walking I thought about past Thanksgivings. In my 73 years I have spent only 3 away from family. In my youth we spent Thanksgiving at my Grandparent's farm. About 30 family members would be in attendance. We have plenty of food. These Thanksgivings were pre TV so we did not have the distraction of a football game except on the radio. After dinner my Aunt Bernice would play the piano and we would all sing. Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday. Starbucks in Gaslight was open so I stopped for a coffee. The place was very busy. When I got home I showered and then watched the Lions. This afternoon we had Thanksgiving dinner at the Moleski's. The Moleski's daughter, Gale, was home for the holiday. The Namey's and Tim were also in attendance. It was a great time. We were home by 2000. Friday November 25, 2011: Ms P and I went out at 0430. I got up for good at 0600. It was very pleasant this morning for my ride to the MAC. After the workout I pedaled to Breton Village Mall. I met Nancy at Jos Banks and picked out several Christmas presents. I bought a coffee at the Omelet Shop and read my papers in the Mall. When I got home Nancy and I got in the Taurus and headed to Costco. I was surprised that Costco was not very busy. We bought shaving supplies, vitamins, mouthwash and of course peanut butter. I had a hot dog. I did take a nap this afternoon. For dinner we took a coupon and headed to the Red Ball (?) on Plainfield for dinner. The restaurant was very small. The place was jammed. The food was very good. Saturday November 26, 2011: We got up at 0700 and got Ms P in the Taurus and headed out for Michigan City and the discount mall. We did stop at the Kava House for scones and coffee. We got to the Mall at 1000, EST. The mall was just opening. Both Nancy and I purchased a lot of clothes. I bought a pair of wool dress pants at Brooks Brothers, running shorts at Adidas, tee shirts at Eddie Bauer, and button down shirts at Polo. We got home about 1500. I took a 3 mile walk. It was raining and I had to change clothes when I got home. For dinner we finished all the left overs in the reefer. Sunday November 27, 2011: We got up with the alarm at 0700 and got ready for the MAC. Nancy and I both swam 1500 yards. I bought gas at Meijers. I paid $3.14. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I took my Sunday nap and then took a 3 mile walk. Nancy is fixing hot dogs for dinner tonight. We will watch 60 minutes and finishe the GRP before heading to bed. I bought a bottle of single malt scotch in Campbeltown, Scotland. I finished the bottle last week. I really liked taking a small sip after dinner and so I wondered if Springbank Scotch is sold in GR. It is at Martha's Vineyard on Union.

Wednesday November 23, 2011

Wednesday and today is my easy Wed. Nancy woke up still feeling under the weather. So we agreed that today was a good day to go out to breakfast. We got in the Taurus and headed to Wolfgang's. The place was jammed and we had to wait about 20 minutes. I guess a lot of folks took today off. The food was worth the wait. It was very good. After breakfast I checked my email and made a phone call to Eric. Eric had a question about a concrete arch bridge. I gave my opinion which I think reinforced Eric's opinion. Eric is an excellent engineer and like all my ex employees I wish him well. Today is a beautiful day. So I decided to take a bike ride on the White Pine Trail. I started a Riverside Park and rode to downtown Rockford. I stopped at the Hush Puppy Outlet to look around. I rode 24 miles in 2 hours. When I got home I walked Ms P around the block. I had some fruit for lunch and then headed upstairs. Nancy and I have several functions we are attending over the next two weeks. I decided to shine some shoes. I must look spiffy. Nancy worked at Meijer's Garden this afternoon. She said they had over 1,000 visitors during her 4 hour shift. Tonight we are staying home. I will finish the beans and rice. We will read the GRP, watch some TV and I hope to get to bed by 2130.

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Tuesday November 22, 2011

Ms P and I got up at 0500. After she did her bidness I headed back to bed. I got up with the alarm at 0600. It was 32 when I left for the MAC. I encountered a very strong east wind. Being Tuesday I did my row, run and swim routine. I stopped by the bank to get $50 in dollar coins. I use these coins whenever I can. I think the USA should get rid of the paper dollar bill and also the penny. I bought a coffee to go at the Omelet Shop. I sat in a comfortable chair in the Mall's open area and read the DFP and WSJ. The WSJ had a story about the women in charge of disclipine at PSU. She quit because the football coach said she had no authority over the football players. In fact she did and it looks like the football team was held to a different standard than regular students. It looks like there is something rotten in the AD. The DFP reported on Detroit's City Council voting to cut over 1,000 jobs. The Council is being more aggressive than the Mayor. They are finally biting the bullet. When I got home I had lunch. While eating I was watching MSNBC and the Mayor of NYC was on. He took our President to task and said that the President should announce that he will veto any extension to the Bush tax cuts. This simple statement would take the tax isssue off the table and the congress could tackle other debt issues. I would vote for the Mayor based on just what he said today. I had several errands to run this afternoon. First I stopped by Martha's Vineyard on Union to get some wine and champagne. I also stopped by the DeVos Center to get 4 tickets for a play next Tuesday. After I got home from these errands I sat down and spit in a tube. My spit will be used in a DNA test. I ran to the PO to mail this package. After I finish this blog I am heading to Rylee's because they are having a sale that runs from 1600 to 2000. 20% off every item in the store. Nancy I fixing beans and rice for dinner. We will watch NCIS and then head for bed. Nancy says that she is recovering from her cold. She sounded pretty bad last night.

Monday November 21, 2011

Sunday morning and I fixed the alarm so it would go off at the right time. We were at the MAC at 0800. The pool was empty this morning so we did not have to share a lane. We both swam 45 minutes. I bought gas at Meijer's and it was $3.25 per gallon. Nancy fixed poached (world famous) for breakfast. After breakfast I read several sections of the GRP and then headed upstairs for my afternoon nap. After the nap I took a 3 mile walk. Nancy fixed ham sandwiches for dinner. After dinner I read the GRP and watched 60 Minutes. 60 Minutes had two section about successful women. Taylor Swift at age 21 came across as being on top of her game. The second section was about the Frenchwoman who is head of the IMF. I was impressed. I watched part of the Sunday football game and at 2100 headed to bed. Monday November 21, 2011: Ms P had to go out at 0430. I was not happy. The alarm went off at 0555 but I did not get up until 0630. It was cold this morning but the sun was out when I headed to the MAC. I wore lined pants so I did not get cold. The MAC was very crowded this morning. I wonder do some places shut down for Thanksgiving week? I know that Apple is shut down for this week. I am really slowing down. 10 years ago I could run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes. Last year my time increased to 15 minutes. Lately I have been getting slower. This morning my time was 16'10". Ouch. I finished the morning at the Kava House drinking coffe and reading the papers. After lunch Ms P and I headed outside to pick up some leaves. I filled three GR yard bags and also swept the garage. I think my yard work is done for the year. Nancy is not feeling well today so I think we will head to bed early.

Saturday November 19, 2011

Saturday morning and it looks like another nice day. I set the alarm last night but forgot to check that it was set on DST. Because of my error Nancy missed her body pump class. Instead of going to "Bill's" today I headed to the Omelet Shop for a bowl of oatmeal. After breakfast I headed home and loaded my bike on the C2 and headed to Millennium Park. Today I was going to try a circuit where I would not have to backtrack. The circuit was 12 miles long. Last week the park completed a bridge over Maynard. I took the bridge and was able to ride on a new section of road for about 2 miles. The Park has really made some great improvements this year. You can ride for two hours without encountering any vehicles. When I got home I loaded Ms P in the C2 and ran some errands. I bought a CO monitor at Rylee's, a sweater at Jos Banks and I was going to buy some special beer at Russo's. However, the folks at Russo'o told me they sold out of the beer withing 1 hour. When I got home the UM/Neb game was still on so I watched the last 5 minutes. We stayed home last night and Nancy fixed some food left over from over dinner party last night. I watched some football and a movie on cable. I headed upstairs at 2200.

Saturday, November 19, 2011

Friday November 18, 2011

It was much warmer this morning but GR is under a high wind warning. I did not experience any wind problems on my way to the MAC. I was really tired today and I thought about going 50% instead of 100%. However, once I got started I decided to go 100%. On my ride to the Kava House I encounterd some very heavy winds. I had to gear down the bike. I read my papers and drank my coffee slowly because Kim is cleaning the house today. I find stories about energy, argiculture and mining very interesting. I am a commodities person. When I got home Kim was just finishing up. I had a quick lunch and then helped Nancy get ready for a dinner party we are having tonight. Nancy has invited 5 folks over for dinner. She has been working hard all week. After my chores I headed upstairs and continued working on the family tree stuff. I called the Alpena County Clerk's office to see if I could purchase death certificates for my Great Grandparents. I want this information because it will tell me, I hope, their place of birth. About 1600 I took a 30 minute nap. At 1700 I helped Nancy put the finishing touch on her dinner preparations. Exactly at 1800 all the guests arrived. We had drinks and some cheese and crackers, and fruit and nuts. At 1915 Nancy called everyone to the table. She fixed a great Italian dinner. The pumpkin dessert was really good. After dinner we retired to the living room for coffee and conversation. I think a good time was had by all.

Thursday November 17, 2011

It was very cold this morning. On my ride to the MAC it was spitting snow. Lately a lot of folks have been using the rowing machines. So far I have not had to wait to get on a machine. While the rowing machines were busy I was the only person in the pool. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. The WSJ had several articles on the energy boom in the US. In several years if the President doesn't interfer we even might be exporting gas. I did not finish reading the papers because I had to get home in order to be ready to pick up Ms P. She is getting a beauty treatment. I picked her up at 1400 and she looked good. Although it was cold we had little wind. Friday we are expecting winds over 20 mph. I decided I had better pick up some leaves. I got the mower out and filled up two GR leaf bags. Ms P joined me and I spent most of my time throwing to ball to her. Nancy had a luncheon today. She got home about 1500. At 1700 we headed to Great Lakes Shipping for dinner. We got home in time for the 1830 news. At 1915 Nancy and I headed to the OHNA Annual meeting. The meeting was held at the new Christian Elementry School. The meeting was lightly attended. I gave my street light report and discussion followed. Most folks were in favor of raising money so we had a fund to replace the lights when required. We got home at 2030. At 2100 we watched a "Person of Interest". It has been a busy day for both of us and we were asleep by 2200.

Wednesday November 16, 2011

This morning I had Breakfast Club. The alarm goes off at 0555 and I immediately hit the snooze. I finally got up at 0615. I had to hustle because BC starts at 0700. I walked in the Women's Civic at exactly 0700. The meeting was lightly attended. Maybe members were deer hunting. Today's speaker was the director of an organization that tries to get folks to buy locally. She was a good speaker and the program has had some success. After BC I stopped at the Kava House to read the papers. I had a small coffee and because I was parked at a hour parking meter I did not get to finish the papers. When I got home I headed upstairs and did some preparation for a meeting 1330 between the OHNA street light committee and the City of GR. I rode to the meeting with Tom Deur a neighbor. All five committee members were in attendance. It was a good meeting and tomorrow night we will present a report to the general membership at our annual meeting. Rick DeVries was just coming out of the meeting room as we were going in. Rick was the first engineer I hired in 1978. He is a great guy and very good engineer. Rick is now the Assistant City Engineer. After the meeting I checked my email and then went on a 3 mile walk. It was very windy and cold and I got chilled. When I got home I turned on my electric blanket and took a 30 minute nap. I was nice and warm when I got up. Tonight I had several bowls of a special oatmeal that Nancy made on Monday. We found this oatmeal on our Spring trip to Scotland. Two day old oatmeal is better than day old oatmeal. It is now 2050 and as soon as I finish the blog I am going downstairs to watch TV with Nancy. Tonight Missy skyped us and we talked with Missy and AJ. Missy is thinking of moving back to LA. Stay tuned. I did get my 30 minutes in today. Remember it is very important to get outside for 30 during the cold winter months. My Grandfather strongly believed in getting outside. He also believed that every day you should work up a barn yard sweat.

Tuesday November 15, 2011

November 15 is the first day of deer hunting season in Michigan. When I was in high school the guys got two days off to go deer hunting. Guys also got 2 days off for bird season. Girls got nothing. We have been having some mild weather lately. This morning it was 50 when I took Ms P out at 0550. I had to have all my bike lites on when I headed to the MAC this morning. I did the row, run, swim routine this morning. The Mayor of Detroit is very worried that the city will run out on money by April. The unions are saying this is just a scare tactic to make them make some major concessions. I tend to agree with the Mayor. The WSJ had a good article on the rising middle class in South America. The more I read the more I am becoming a free-trader. After lunch I took Ms P on a walk around the block. Her hips seemed to be bothering her today. I spent some time in my office catching up. I had to mail some packages so I walked to the PO. I took a 30 minute nap. It is now 1738 and after I finish this blog I will head downstairs. Tonight we will watch NCIS and read the GRP. I hope to be in bed early because tomorrow I have Breakfast Club. I got my 30 in today; did you?

Monday November 14, 2011

The weather has been very mild for the past two days. Ms P and I went out at 0550. I did not see the skunk. I got to the MAC by 0745 today. Mondays are my busy day but I was done and on my way to the Kava House by 1015. Some day I will understand credit default swaps or whatever they are called. On the political front I am a Huntsman supporter. I like his answers he gave during Saturday's debate. Mitt turned me off with his saber rattling. I got home at 1230. After a quick lunch I headed outside to pick up some leaves. The wind on Sunday dropped a lot of leaves. I fired up the mower and picked up the front yard. Ms P was outside with me and I had to spend a lot of time throwing the ball. After completing my yard work I got in the C2 and ran some errands. I stopped my Macatawa Bank to rent a safe deposit box. I wanted all 5 family members to have access to the box so I have to get the kids to sign several documents. I took a short nap and then sent some emails to OHNA members who will be attending the Wednesday street light meeting. Nancy had a Board Meeting this morning so she did not go to the MAC. She did, however, stop by Kohl's and bought me a new pair of bedroom slippers. Tonight we will have a light dinner and then read the GRP and watch some TV. Starting in Jan we will not have a GRP delivered on M/W/F/S. We will have to read the GRP online. Friday I was looking for some evidence that I was in the Navy and I came across some old letters that I wrote my mother. In fact I think Mom saved all the letters I wrote while in the Navy. I found a letter I wrote 50 years ago today. I was attending the Civil Engineer's Corp school in Pt. Hueneme, CA. I told Mom that on Friday, Veterans Day, I attended Disneyland with 4 classmates. Veterans in uniform got in free. On Saturday I worked at an Air Show at Pt Mugu Naval Air Station. I saw the Blue Angels. I had been assigned my first duty station, Midway Island Naval Station, and told Mom I was getting ready. I thought I would leave from San Franciso for Midway with a stop in Pearl Harbor to change planes. The estimated departure date was 22NOV61. I asked Mom if she would send me my swim suit and other warm weather gear to Midway. My Christmas list included a pair of khaki pants, size 30. Yes size 30! I asked if it had snowed in Alpena yet. I thought it would be over a year before I saw any snow. Mom loved to play bridge so I asked about her game. I also asked if Dad was ready for the start of deer season which starts tomorrow. I told her that it has not rained in CA since I have been there, Oct. I also asked what Dad wanted for Christmas. I gave Mom my new address: Ensign R. H. Scott Public Works Dept U.S. Naval Station, Midway Navy No. 3080 FPO San Francisco, CA I was excited about starting my Naval career and looked forward to actually working instead of going to school. The letter was written in pencil and I did not find any errors in grammar. But how would I know? I closed the letter Love bobby

Sunday November 13, 2011

It is 1542 on a windy gloomy Nov. day. I am listening to a CD of Scottish Folk tunes. I bought it when in Scotland and have almost worn it out. This morning Nancy and I got up at 0700 and got ready for our morning swim. We both swam 1500 yards in under 48 minutes. I think this is pretty good for old folks. Nancy is a great swimmer. After the swim we headed up to Meijer's for supplies. I filled the Taurus up and gas was $3.44 per gallon. I also returned 23 bottle for our refund. Michigan's bottle return law I think has proven very successful. Nancy fixed her world famous scrambled eggs for breakfast. I did take my Sunday afternoon nap. After I finish this blog I will walk to the post office to mail several survey forms that I recently filled out. Tonight Nancy is fixing barbecued pork sandwiches with tomato soup. We will watch 60 minutes and finish the GRP. I hope to be in bed by 2130 because Nancy and Bob have a busy week coming up.

Saturday November 12, 2011

Saturday and this morning I am heading to Bill's for breakfast. Before heading out I waited until we had some daylight. This morning Nancy took Ms P out and Ms P started to chase a skunk. Nancy stopped her. What do you do if your dog gets sprayed. When I went out I could not see the skunk. This morning I had Bill's "Super Special". It was very good. As soon as I got home I loaded the bike on the C2 and headed to Millennium Park. It was a beautiful day for a bike ride. The temperature was in the high 40s. The highlight of the ride was when a big 10 point buck ran in front of me. I biked 23 miles. I had a quick lunch and then headed outside to pick up leaves. Today I used my mower with the grass catcher attached. It really works well. I spent about 2 hours working. Actually I spent about 1 hour throwing the ball for Ms P. Nancy also worked outside trimming a lot of our bushes and several trees. When we got done we were both to tired to go out for dinner. Nancy fixed me a Costco pizza. It was great. I spent most of the evening watching football on TV. Nancy went to bed at 2100 but I stayed up until 2300.

Friday November 11, 2011

Today is 11/11/11, Veteran's Day. On Veteran's Day I usually ask all the Vets I know if they can remember their serial number. The reply is almost 100% affirmative. My number was 652654. We had snow on the ground this morning but it is suppose to warm up real fast. Of course I did the MAC/Kava House routine. I do not know why I continue to read about the problems in Europe but I do. Global warmning seems to have been pushed off the front pages. I think our President has made a bad mistake by not approving the oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf. The line would create a lot of jobs and help us towards some type of energy independence. When was the last time you heard anything about the hole in the ozone layer? After a quick lunch I got in the C2 and headed to Alto. I had a short meeting with Jennifer Dougherty to go over a set of plans she had prepared. The plans were well done. When I got home I immediately headed downstairs to see if I could find some paper that said I was a veteran. With a little digging I sound my "Certificate of Service". I will need the certificate in order to get a free meal at Pietro's. Nancy and I did have dinner at Pietro's. It was very crowded. After dinner we watched some TV before heading to bed.

Thursday November 10, 2011

It was really cold when I started out to the MAC. In fact I encountered some sleet. My Thursday routine was again the row, swim, and run bit. Can I include my 7.3 mile bike ride (home to mac, mac to Kava, Kava to home)as part of my aero for the day? While at the MAC it started snowing but when I left the snow had stopped. Instead of the Kava HOuse I bought a coffee at Breton Village and drank it and read my papers in their open area. They have some comfortable chairs. After a quick lunch I headed upstairs to continue my plan review. I even used my ACAD program to draw up some sections. I was happy that I still remember how to use the program. At 1530 I took Ms P to the Vet for a physical and her annual shots. The Vet said she was healthy. For dinner tonight we headed to Great Lakes Shipping. Lately, I have been drinking Sam Adam's Octoberfest beer. It is very tasty. We did not get a paper tonight. The delivery folks must have had a breakdown. So I watched TV. We like a Person of Interest. About 2000 Ms P started shaking. She also was very lethargic. We assumed it was a reaction to her afternoon shot. I had to carry her upstairs. It was snowing when I went to bed.

Wednesday November 9, 2011

Today is my easy day. I slept in until 0700. It was threatening rain so I put on my rain suit for my ride to Bill's. I had their "weekday special". On my way home it started to rain hard. The rain suit kept me dry except for some exposed areas. I put my wet socks and in the dryer. I spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon in my office checking some bridge plans. About 1430 our furnace maintenance man arrived to perform a maintenance check. Every thing was ok. He did mention that our furnace is about at the end of its useful life. Tonight Nancy has book club. I am not going out because Tom Moleski is on a cruise. I had a turkey sandwich,a beer and a dish of ice cream. Nancy got home about 2030. We watched some TV and then went to bed and watched "Harry's Law". I don't think the show will make it.

Tuesday November 8, 2011

When Ms P and I went out this morning the pavement was wet from an early morning shower. The weather folks said it would rain all day so I wore my rainsuit to the MAC. It did not rain. Today being Tuesday I did the row, run and swim routine. I did increase my swim to 750 yards. I read the WSJ and DFP at the Kava House. Lately both the MAC and Kava House have not been very busy. I do not know the reason. It started to rain hard as I was pulling into the driveway. After lunch Nancy and I headed to our voting station to do our civic duty. The place was empty. I voted and kept my nearly perfect voting record intact. When I got home I headed upstairs to my office. My first duty was to set up a meeting with the City regarding the OHNA's Street Lights. The meeting is set for next Wednesday. I then took a short nap. After the nap I continued reviewing a set of bridge plans. I printed the plans out 1/2 size. I think my eyes are getting worse because Nancy came upstairs and asked if I had been crying because my eyes were all red. I pointed out that the redness was caused by eye strain. Tomorrow I will get some reading glasses. Tonight we had sandwiches and soup for dinner. I also had a beer. It is now 1934 and I must get this blog done so I can watch NCIS. Despite the rain I got my 30 in today. Did you? I feel sorry for PSU's football coach but the charges against his former assistant are very serious. Children must be protected at all costs. I do not know who to believe in the Herman Cain matter. It is a "he said/she said" matter. I think the Navy had the right approach when they said "Never, Never touch a person who is subordinate to you". Good Advice.

Monday November 7, 2011

The weather folks said that we wil have no rain today. They recommended raking leaves and other yard work because the rain will start tomorrow and last several days. It is great to be back on regular time because it was light out when I started my ride to the MAC. Monday is my busy day at the MAC but I was done by 1000. I promised myself that I would not spend more that 1 hour reading the morning papers at the Kava House. I completed this mission. I think I am so tired reading about the debt crisis that I skipped over most articles. After a quick lunch I headed outside to pick up leaves using the bagger on the lawn mower. It took about 2 hours to get the yard clean. Most of this time was spent throwing the ball for Ms P. I think I will have to pick up leaves one more time this year. After I completed the leaf project I got in the C2 and ran some errands. I filled the C2 up and also got a gallon for the mower. I stopped by D&W to purchase some GR leaf bags. I then showered and took a very short nap. It is now 1735 and as I write this blog I am listening to a CD on Scottish folk tunes that I picked up last spring in the motherland. After dinner I will read the GRP and then watch some TV. Speaking of the GRP starting In 2012 the GRP will only deliver papers on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. I guess this is the sign of the times. I like to read papers on my Kindle but I miss the funny papers.

Sunday November 6, 2011

Sunday and Nancy and I are confused by the time change. We did make it to the MAC by 0800. We both swam our 45 minutes. After the MAC we headed to Meijer's for our weekly supplies. I filled the Taurus and gas was $3.25. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. After breakfast I read several sections of the GRP and then headed upstairs for my Sunday nap. I spent the rest of the afternoon working in my office. At 1700 I walked Ms P around the block and then went on a 1.5 mile walk. It was very windy today and the leaves are really falling. The temperature got to 60 today. It is now 1740 and it is dark outside. We are having soup for dinner tonight. We will read the GRP and watch 60 minutes and then head to bed. Fifty years ago on a early November Sunday Ensign Scott and several of his fellow Ensigns put on our uniforms and headed to LA. We attended a LA Rams/Detroit Lions football game. Military folks in uniform got in at 1/2 price. I think one of my fellow classmates had a car and drove us from Port Hueneme to LA. As I remember the Lions won and we had good seats. Karl Sweetan was QB for the Lions. Missy and I checked the pay for an Ensign today. They make about $2800 per month. I was making $222.30 per month. Times have changed.

Saturday November 5, 2011

Saturday and the weatherman said it was going to be a beautiful fall day. Boy! was he ever right. It was a spectacular fall day. I started off by pedaling to Bill's for their pancake breakfast. After breakfast I loaded the bike on the C2 and headed to Millennium Park. I did a little exploring today. I found one new paved branch of Kent Trails that extends from the trail to under I 196. This trail was built when they were doing the Jennison/Baldwin Road Interchange. Another new paved trail extends around the north lake in Millennium Park. After doing the Kent Trail/Millennium Park routes I headed east on Wealthy until I tied into the Oxford Street Trail. I rode across the Grand River and Market Avenue using this trail. The City of GR used existing RR bridges to construct this trail. A branch of this trail located on the north side of the GR River heads west, parallel to the river, and goes through the old Butterworth Landfill. I pedaled the perimeter of the landfill ending back on Kent Trail near I 196 and the Coke Plant. I put 22 miles on my bike in 2 hours. I was a great ride and we have to thank the planners for building these trails. It is great to have these nice wild trails within the metro area. I did see several deer on my ride. I had a quick shower and then lunch before heading up to the office. This afternoon Nancy and Mary Namey are working at a sale at the Gardens. Ed Namey took the girls at noon. I picked them up at 1715. We then headed to the Twisted Rooster for dinner. Ed Namey got to the restaurant before we did and he already had a table. We were lucky that Ed got there early because when we arrived they had folks waiting outside. We had a good meal. I watched some football when we got home. Nancy went to bed at 2100 but I stayed up until 2300 (actually 2200 because we go off DST). It was a great fall day. I noted a lot of spelling errors om this blog. Will someone tell me how to use word with spellcheck to write this blog. Since I installed the new explorer I cannot cut and paste. I need my spell check.

Friday November 4, 2011

Friday and today I have nothing planned. I do my MAC and Kava House routine. I do spend some extra time reading at the Kava House because Kim is cleaning the house today and I do not want to get in her way. I get home about 1300 and Kim is still cleaning. Nancy mentioned she wants to go to Costco so we get in the Taurus and head out. Costco was very busy today. They also had a lot of free samples. I quess the free samples means the Holidays are coming. After shopping I have a hot dog. Costco does have good hot dogs. I spent the rest of the afternoon working in my office. We stayed home Friday night. Nancy fixed ham sandwiches for dinner. We also had mashed potatoes and peas. We did watch some TV. We watched the Gifted Man. I kind of like this show. We headed upstairs about 2130.

Thursday, November 3, 2011

Thursday November 3, 2011

We all slept in today until 0630. I did take Ms P out at 0510 to do her bidness. Today was swimming day at the MAC. I increased my distance to 750 yards. It was raining when I left home so I had to wear my rain suit. However, it had stopped when I left the MAC. I read several articles on the Greek debt and I still think the PM made a smart move. I also found out that the PM is a graduate of Missy's college, Amherst. Today's DFP had an article on the problems the City of Detroit is having. Mayor Bing is saying that the City might require a State appointed fiscal manager. A fiscal manager is the last step before bankruptcy. After a quick lunch I headed upstairs to read my mail. At 1430 I got in the C2 and headed to Great Lakes Chemical. I have a contract for them to put a paint sealer on the C2. The C2 now looks nice and shiny. I finished a Spenser book while waiting for my car and started reading Lord Jim. Tonight Nancy and I are eating at Great Lakes Shipping. I think "Person of Interest" is on tonight. I like this show. If it is not on I will be in bed by 2100. I got my 30 in today.

Wednesday November 2, 2011

I had to get up at 0555 because today is Breakfast Club. The speaker today was from the Sylvan Learing Center. She gave a very good explanation of what Sylvan does locally. After Breakfast Club I stopped by "Martha's Vineyard" on Union Avenue. Martha's is a wine store that also sells bakery goods, all kinds of cheese and other speciality items. I bought two bottle of wine. Nancy has to work at the Gardens this afternoon. I spent several hours in my office. Late in the afternoon I walked Ms P around the block and then went on a 4 mile walk. We had a light dinner and then watched some TV. I was very tired so I was in bed by 2100. I did not even read the WSJ or DFP today.

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

Tuesday November 1, 2011

Missy said she was leaving at 0600 so I set my alarm for 0555. Missy and AJ left for Ohio shortly after 0600. Today I did my tri. I am really reaping some benefits from my swim so I think I will increase my time to 30 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday's WSJ had several articles on Greece's PM calling for a referendum on his austerity measures. I think it is a smart move politically but he sure got the EU in an uproar. HIs actions probably caused the dip in the stock market. After a quick lunch I headed upstairs to work on the computer. Late in the afternoon I walked Ms P around the block and then took a 1.5 mile walk. Around 1700 our power went out. It was still light enough for Nancy to make ham sandwiches but she could not heat up yesterday's soup. I checked with several neighbors and they also were without power. We got out our flashlight and spent several hours reading. At 1945 the power came back on. We were able to watch NCIS and read the GRP. At 2130 we headed to bed. Ms P is slowly making adjustments to her new lodgings.

Monday October 31, 2011

I can't believe that it is the end of October already. Where has the year gone? The day started dark and cold. The MAC was not very crowded and I finished in record time. I did my ususal coffee and paper at the Kava House. When I got home Missy and AJ were gone. They were visiting a family that had adopted a child from Kazakstan. I had a quick lunch and then headed upstairs to my office. At 0245 Missy and I got in the Taurus and headed to Hudsonville to meet with Doug Brackmann. Doug is an attorney who has provided me and SCECO with good legal advice. Missy is thinking of trying to market some USA products in Central Asia. It was a good meeting. Nancy fixed a pot of chicken noddle soup for dinner. It was very good. At 1800 Missy, AJ and I headed out Trick-or treating. AJ was dressed as a tiger. Ms P wore her hot dog costume. Ms P was the hit of the neighborhood. We spent about an hour walking around the neighborhood. It was a very pleasant evening. The street were very crowded with a lot of kids from outside the area. In fact we had a traffic jam of visiting cars. Nancy ran out of candy in an hour. She had over 200 kids and adults visit our house. We watched a little TV and by 2100 we were all in bed.

Sunday, October 30, 2011

Sunday October 30, 2011

The alarm goes off at 0655. Nancy and I get up and head to the MAC. We both swam for 45 minutes. We stopped back home to pick up Missy and AJ and head to Meijer's. I filled the Taurus up and gas was $3.44 per gallon. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. In keeping with a Scott family tradition I took my Sunday afternoon nap. After the nap I took a 2.25 mile walk. Nancy is fixing ham and potatoes for dinner. Tonight we will walk over to the corner of Cambridge and Pontiac to show AJ a great Halloween display. I got my 30 in today did you?

Saturday October 29, 2011

Nancy and I get up about 0630. Nancy said she was really tired and would not be going to the MAC. Missy and AJ were just getting up when I was getting ready to ride my bike to "Bill's". I decided to wait so we could all go out for breakfast. I stopped by the Kava House for some coffee and to read the papers. Nancy called as I was finishing my coffee so I headed home. We all piled into the Taurus and headed to Bill's. Bill's was not very crowded so we did not have to wait. In fact I have never waited at Bill's. After breakfast Nancy and I took AJ to Meijer Gardens. The Gardens had a lot of pumpkins on display. It was turning into a bright sunny day. When we got home it was still to wet to cut the grass so I took a short nap. At 1530 I started cutting the grass and was done by 1730. I do not think I will have to cut the grass again this year. Nancy fixed sloppy joes for dinner. We all enjoyed the meal. After dinner AJ and I carved a pumpkin. I think this is the first time I have carved a pumpkin since the 80s. It actually turned out ok. It is on display on our front porch. I watched for the fifth time the Bourne Identity on TV. I really like this movie. I headed upstairs about 2300.

Friday October 28, 2011

Friday and my big question today is "will the rain hold off so I can cut the grass". Today Missy and AJ are coming for Halloween. We do not know exactly what time they will leave Ohio so the dinner plans are on hold. It was really dark when I headed to the MAC. I am always worried when I pedal in the dark, especially in the morning when folks are in a hurry getting to work. I performed my morning routine at the MAC without a hitch. It was just starting to rain when I got to the Kava House. I read the WSJ and DFP and I found nothing really important to report. After a quick lunch I headed upstairs to work on a project. Missy called and said that they would not be leaving Ohio until about 1700. That means that Nancy and I will go out for dinner. About 1700 we get in the Taurus and head to Panera Bread on 28th Street. After dinner we head to Kohl's. Nancy gets 30% off today. Missy and AJ arrived about 2300. Nancy and I managed to stay awake until their arrival. AJ headed right to bed and Missy and I stayed up and watched the 2300 news and the first part of Jay Leno. I thought Jay Leno was funny.

Thursday Ocotber 27, 2011

Today is suppose to be another dark gloomy day. At the MAC I did my row, run, swim routine. The WSJ was loaded with articles on the EU's debt deal. I checked on my itouch about 1200 and the stock market was going up. In todays mail I received a flyer from the owners of the Ambassador Bridge. This bridge is privately owned and goes from Detroit to Windsor, Ontario. The bridge spans the Detroit River. Canada wants a new bridge located down stream from the Ambassador Bridge. NAFTA has created a lot of truck traffic between Canada and the US. In fact I think Detroit is the busiest border crossing. The new bridge would be wider and have better connections to existing freeways. One of the raps on the Ambassador Bridge is that it dumps a lot ot trucks on Windsor's surface street creating big traffic jams. The new bridge would be a toll bridge like the Mackinaw and Blue Water Bridges. Canada would put up most of the money. The new bridge is supported by the MI Chamber of Commerce the Unions and most major newspapers. I think the new bridge is a great idea. The flyer said I should call my State Senator and tell him the new bridge is a waste of money. I don't agree so I emailed my Senator and told him to support the new bridge. Enough already on the bridge, Bob! After lunch I headed upstairs to my office to continue checking a set of bridge plans. I also caught up on my emails and banking business. My SS check came in on Wednesday. I want all you young folks to keep working and paying into SS so I can keep spending. At 1730 Nancy and I headed to Great Lakes Shipping for dinner. After dinner we headed to the GR Art Museum to listen to a lecture and look at a display by an artist who also taught at UW, Madison. It was a very good lecture (and short). But what was so amazing about the speaker was that he was 90 years old. The museum served snacks and Nancy and I spent about 2 hours there. I then watched some TV while I read the GRP. I like the new TV show "Person of Interest". I did watch some of the World Series but went to bed before the sixth inning. I guess I missed a great game.

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Wednesday October 26, 2011

Today is easy Wednesday. I start by pedaling to Bill's for their pancake breakfast. It was pitch black when I left at 0715. I can't wait for DST to end. I don't like to pedal in the dark. After breakfast it was still dark and gloomy but I decided to go on a bike ride. I headed east towards Reeds Lake. I rode around the lake and my speedometer said I had pedaled 11 miles. I had to mail some packages so I walked to the PO. I had a quick lunch and then did some reading while I waited for the sprinkler man to come and drain our system. He arrived at 1330 and it took about 20 minutes to complete the draining. I spent the rest of the afternoon in my office working on an excel template. This evening Nancy and I are meeting the Horlings, Hal and Karen at Red's in Rockford for dinner. Everyone was on time and we spent the next 2.5 hours eating, drinking and talking. It was great. We got home at 2100 and I quickly read the GRP before going to bed.

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Tuesday October 25, 2011

The weather man last night it would not rain until late this afternoon. Liar, Liar! I walked outside at 0700 and it was raining. I put on my rainpants for my ride to the MAC. Today I did the row, run, swim routine. It really started to rain when I got about 1/2 way to the Kava House. It was free refill day at the Kava House so i got a small coffee and had it refilled several times. The WSJ had several articles on the EU problems. I wish Greece would just sink into the Mediterranean. Why do all the GOP candidates keep shooting themselves in the foot? Despite my low opinion of the President I do think his decision to bring the troops home from Iraq was the right one. Now I hope he brings them home from Afghanistan. After lunch I headed upstairs to my office. I spent the entire afternoon working on my computer. I spent some time working on an Excel worksheet. It has been awhile since I used Excel so I had to spend some time refreshing my skills. Tonight we will watch NCIS and read the GRP. I hope to read an article in Vanity Fair on the problems in CA. I guess Arnie did not solve many problems. Tomorrow I will check on getting my DNA run.

Monday October 24, 2011

We had a heavy rain last night. In fact we had a lot of thunder. I was glad Ms P was not here. I was up at 0610. I followed my normal Monday routine. You can tell the political season is upon us because there is a lot of strong talk in the MAC's locker room. I pedaled to the MAC in the dark but when I left for the Kava House the sun was out and we had blue sky. I read both the WSJ and DFP. It is hard to find a consensus on what the economy will do in the next 6 months. I am an optimist. I would like to see interest rates go up. My CD's are only getting 0.5%. After lunch I checked my email and then took a 3 mile walk. It was a great day for a walk. Last nights rain seemed to bring out the reds on the maple trees. After the walk I wrote a note to Lucas on the toy Trabant I bought for him. I also wrote an article for the OHNA newsletter on our street lights. Tonight we will watch some TV, read the papers and I hope I am in bed by 2130. I hope everyone got their 30 in today.

Sunday, October 23, 2011

Sunday October 23, 2011

The alarm goes off at 0655 and Bob and Nancy get ready for our swim. We both swam 1250 yards. After the swim we headed to Meijer's for our weekly food supplies. I filled the Taurus up and gas was $3.39 a gallon. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for beakfast. After breakfast I read some of the GRP and then headed upstairs for a nap. After the nap I took a 3 mile walk. Nancy is fixing some salmon for dinner tonight. We will watch 60 minutes and then head to bed. It was a back to normal Sunday. In yesterday's blog I mentioned attending the CEC school in CA. I did not tell how I got to CA. I picked up a small Renault car from an OCS classmate in Detroit and drove it to Alpena. After a very pleasant two week in Alpena I loaded the Renault up and headed to Minneapolis, MN. I drove north from Alpena, crossed the bridge and then headed west on US2. I spent the night in Rhinelander, WI and then noon next day I pick up two fellow Ensigns In Minneapolis. We each had a sea bag with all our gear. I had purchased a roof rack and we got all the bags on the roof. We then left MN and headed to San Diego. The other two sailors were assigned to Destroyers out of San Diego. We shared driving and planned on driving straight through. The Renault was not a big car and it was grossly underpowered. Max speed was 60 mph. We did not stop except for gas. When we got to Yuma, AZ we decided that we were going to reach CA on time so we stopped for a hot meal and beer. After dinner we got in the Renault and drove the rest of the way to CA. When you are 23 everything is possible.

Saturday October 22, 2011

Saturday morning and of course it is breakfast at Bill's. It was in the 30s when I left for Bill's. It was also pitch black. I had their pancake special. After breakfast I put the bike rack on the C2 and headed to Millennium Park. The sun was out and it was a perfect day. I had two deer run across my path and also saw several muskrats. The Park has just finished paving several new paths and I had fun exploring them. The Park is also building a new bridge across Maynard and it looks line it should be completed by next spring. When the bridge is complete we will be able to pedal for miles without crossing a road. I rode for 24 miles. When I got home I had a quick lunch and then a shower. I took a short nap. At 1730 Nancy and I headed to the Longhorn for dinner. We met the Namy's. We had a great dinner and since the Namy's had just come back from a trip to Italy we had a good time taling about our vacations. After dinner we came back to our house for dessert. Nancy fixed cookies and an apple crunch. It was great. I finished the evening watching some football on TV. I watched part of the MSU/UW game but did not see the last play.

The weather people said the rain has stopped but it was misting on my ride to and from the MAC. Today completes my first full week since our high calorie Eastern Europe trip. Push ups and chin ups are harder when one is carrying 10 extra pounds. Hoever, I did survive the week. I did end up at the Kava House and read both the WSJ and DFP. I try to read as fast as I can but it still takes about 60 minutes to read the WSJ. I think I understand the money problems in Europe and I do not see an easy solution. I see that our leaders are giving us folks on SS a raise. Do we really need one? After a quick lunch I started running some errands. My first stop of Costco where I bought two wool/polyester blend long sleeve tee shirts. They might keep me warm on my cold weather bike rides. Costco every once in a while has great bargains on men's clothing. My next stop was Gander Mountain to get some wool ragg socks. They did not have any. I guess my only supply is LL Bean. Finally, I stopped at Master Cleaners to pick up all my winter wool coats and jackets. I think I am now set for cold weather. We attended the OHNA's monthly TGIF. I always enjoy attending these functions to find out what the neighbors are doing. 50 years ago October I was attending the Navy's Civil Engineering Corps Officer's school. In Port Hueneme, CA. This school was not too hard. In fact it was kind of fun after OCS. We got out of class about 1500 and then we spent the rest of the day enjoying the many great athletic facilities the Base had. We went swimming, played racketball, and even had a touch football team. It was great to be an Ensign in the CEC of the Navy.

Thursday October 20, 2011

I still am suffering from jet lag because I was wide awake at 0600. It was pouring pain when I was ready to leave for the MAC so I put on my rain suit. It was also pitch black but in addition to my bike lights I bought a light that fstraps on top of my helmut. It also has a rear view light. Motorists should be able to see me. I did the tri this morning. On the swim portion the stroke I used was the breast stroke. It is easier on my shoulder. It was raining hard when I was ready to leave so instead of going to the Kava House I stayed at the MAC and read my newspapers. After lunch I cleaned out my sweater drawer. I was surprised how many nice sweaters I had on the bottom of the pile. I paid some bills and walked to the Post Office and mailed them. I am getting my 30 minutes in are you? Nancy had a wine and cheese party this afternoon. She got home about 1800. Instead of going to Great Lakes Shipping we headed to Costco to get some supplies like peanut butter, vitamin D pills, etc. I had a slice of pizza for dinner. We watched a little TV and then at 2100 headed to bed.

The Danube River Cruise continues: Sunday October 8, We arrived in Belgrade, Serbia while we were eating breakfast. At 0900 we got in our bus and headed on a tour of the city. Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and has a population of 1,275,000. We toured the Tito Museum, St. Sava Church and then walked through the old part of the City. Belgrade is just recovering from all the troubles they had in the 90s and although there are some really nice sectons it looked depressed. Serbia's main religion is Russian Orthodox. At 1800 the boat left Belgrade and headed to Croatia. Just a comment on the Ottomans (Turks). The Ottoman Empire either controlled or marched through all the countries we visited. Their influence in Eastern European history is immense.. This winter I plan on reading more on the Ottoman Empire. I am using Goggle's new format and I cannot find a spell check. I am using my 1956 Webster's Dictionary but I cannot catch everything. Please overlook the misspelling. Monday October 10, 2011: We are docked at Vukovar, Croatia. Vukora was nearly destroyed by the Serbians in the early 1990s. Today we departed at 0900 for a tour of Osijek, Croatia. We visited an elementary school that is supported by Grand Circle. The children in the school put on a program for us. It was really very good. The one thing I noticed was the dress of the kids. They were wearing the universal kid's clothing of jeans, Tee shirts and Nikes. The same outfit worn by the grandchildren of the tour group. Nancy and I and three other couples had lunch with a local family. We had the local fare and got to talk to the family. The folks in this town had to leave because of the 1990 war. They were gone for about 8 years and when they came back their home was destroyed. The home we visited had been rebuilt. They had state of the art windows and all the appliances were new. I was surprised that they burned wood. Their property was long and narrow. 50' x 400'. They had a great garden with fruit trees. They also had chickens and rabbits. It was interesting. As we moved up the Danube each new country seemed more prosperous than the last. Croatia was no exception. The main religion in Croatia is Roman Catholic. Tuesday October 11, 2011: The boat sailed overnight and we reached Kalocsa, Hungary in the morning. It was an easy day for Bob and Nancy. We spent the morning in the boat's lounge reading our books. In the afternoon we walked around the town of Kalocsa. Kalocsa is a town of about 18,000. We liked our walk around town. Cobblestone streets and very old scenic buildings made the walk very pleasurable. Wednesday October 12, 2011: We arrived in Budapest at 0630. After breakfast we went on a tour of Budapest. Budapest was the highlight of our trip. The city has a population of 1,700,000 and is loaded with old historic buildings and churches. The architecture was spectular. Pesta is located on one side of the Danube and Buda is on the other. Today we were berthed on the Buda side. The tour last until 1300. After lunch Nancy and I walked along a 1 mile pedestrian mall. We especially liked their covered marketplace. It is kinda like Clevelands "Westside Market". After another great evening meal we listened to a lecture on Hungarian traditions. Thursday October13, 2011: Nothing was planned for today but Nancy and I had a very special day. Melissa's college roomate, Adri, lives in a suburb of Budapest. Adri picked us up at 0930 and took us on a walking tour of Budapest. Adri is very knowledgeable about the architecture of Budapest. We walked into buildings like the Four Seasons Hotel and Adri would point out their unique features. We enjoyed walking through the old Jewish secition of the city. Adri showed us several old buildings that were being restored. We stopped at the National Museum and walked through their section on the History of Hungry. We had lunch at the oldest cafe in the city. We had a typical Hungarian business man's lunch, complete with a glass of Hungarian beer. It was a very pleasant lunch. We got back ot the boat about 1330. After spending several hours relaxing, Zolton, Adri's husband picked us up and drove use to a small suburb of Budapest for dinner. We were met by Adri and their two children. The restaurant, I think, was a typical small town eatery. It had about 10 tables. We had what I would consider a typical dinner that a Hungarian family would have on a night out. Zoltons and Adri's live style is not that much different than a professional couple in the USA. The kids were typical youngsters with interests similar to our grandkids. Eddie the son recommended that I get my grandson, Lucas, a toy Tarbant car. The Tarbant was manufactured in East Germany during the Soviet era. It had cardboard components and was the laughing stock of the auto industry. However, the model car is a must have for six year old boys. Nancy and I enjoyed our time spent with Adri and her family. The are a lovely family. Friday October 14, 2011: Today is our last full day on the tour. At 0900 we got in our bus and took a tour of Szentendre. Szentendre is a thousand year old town famous for its 18th century architecture. We ended the day with the Captain's Farewell Dinner. The cook's pulled out all the stops. It was great. We said our goodbyes to our boatmates. Saturday October 15, 2011: Travel day. We got up at 0230 and headed to the airport. Our flight left at 0615. We stopped in Amsterdam and got into Chicago about 1400. We got the C2 and headed for home. We arrived in GR about 1800. Saturday October 16, 2011: We had jet lag so getting up at 0700 was easy. We swam for 30 minutes and then headed to Meijer's for groceries. I took my afternoon nap and even went on a 3 mile walk. I fell asleep before 60 Minutes and woke up about 1.5 hours later. We were in bed early. Monday October 17, 2011: Back to normal. I did every thing at 50%. In the afternoon I mowed the grass. I hope it is the last time this year. After dinner I fell asleep watching TV. Another early night. Tuesday October 18, 2011: I did my row, run, swim routine. I spent a lot of time at the Kava House reading my papers. In the afternoon I got my winter wardrobe out. I took my wool pants, sweaters and coats to the dry cleaners. Nancy attended a OHNA meeting in the evening. Wednesday October 19, 2011: Today I attended Breakfast Clubl. The speaker was GR's Police Chief and he gave a presentation on the terrible shooting in July. Seven folks were shot and killed and the Chief played the 911 calls and showed the videos that were captured by the cameras mounted on the police cars. They had a wild car chase through GR. It was very interesting. After the meeting I got the C2 serviced. This afternoon Nancy is working at the Gardens and this evening she is working at a Volunteer Dinner. I will not see her until about 2100.
