Tuesday December 21, 2010

Happy Solstice and remember the days are getting longer. Ms P must know something is up because she has been very antsy. We went outside at 0415 this morning to do her bidness. It was too cloudy to see the lunar eclipse. We were suppose to get 3" of snow overnight but it had not started at 0415. I went back to bed and did not get up until 0730. I walked to the MAC this morning. On my walk I decided that I would do my normal exercises at 50% this morning.

As I was strapping into the rowing machine I noticed a very tall young lady on the next machine. She and I started at the same time. I could tell that she had rowed before. Her stroke was very smooth and powerful. I glanced over and saw that on her monitor that the was rowing 02'02" per 500 meters I was rowing 02'26". In the standard 2,000 meter race she would finish in 08'08". I would finish in 09'44". I found out she was on the UM crew team and was a freshman. She is also in the engineering school. Another Go Blu moment at the MAC.

I completed my exercises and walked over to the Starbucks at D&W and read the DFP and WSJ. I got home about 1300 and had a quick lunch. Nancy had packed Ms P's suitcase and Ms P knew that something was up.

After lunch I headed upstairs to finish packing and continue reading some magazines. Kim came about 1430 and picked up Ms P. She was excited to go. I was disappointed. Nancy said her car was dirty so I took it to the Breton Village car wash. It does look great now. Tonight we are going out to eat. The place at this time 1627 has not been determined. The winner is Great Lakes Shipping. After dinner we watched TV until 2000 and then headed to bed.

Monday December 20, 2010

It is almost getting boring but I followed my normal week day routine, except for Wednesday. it was 27⁰ when I left on my walk to the MAC. I wore a lighter coat but still worked up a sweat. I will have to take a clean undershirt in my back pack so I don't get into a wet undershirt after my shower. On my walk I passed by a young man talking on a cell phone in his driveway. I thought the voice was familiar and it was. The voice belonged to young Tom Pritz. Tom lived across the street from us during his high school days. Tom now lives in Abilene, TX and was just home visiting his father. We talked for a while and he seems in good health and spirit. He now has two kids in college. I remember Steve going over to the Pritz house after they had a big party in their huge side yard and picking up empty beer cans. Time does fly.

When I got home I walked Ms P around the block and then settled in for an afternoon of catching up on my magazine reading. I think I accomplished a lot. It is now 2034 and I just completed packing for our trip.

Tomorrow is the winter solstice and tonight is a lunar eclipse. We are also suppose to get 3 inches of snow over night. Reeds Lake is now completely iced over. I saw several fish shanties on the lake and a number of folks ice skating. Winter has settled in until St Patrick's Day. St Patrick's Day is my official end of winter.

Sunday December 19, 2010

Nancy and I headed to the MAC at 0740 this morning and it was very dark. We both swam 45 minutes. I swam 5 laps using the crawl. This is the first time in 6 months I have been able to use this stroke. After the MAC we headed to Meijer's for our weekly supplies. Actually we only need supplies for several days. I purchased gas today and it was $3.00 per gallon. We also returned $4 worth of bottles.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs this morning. The eggs were large, not jumbo, so I had three. After reading the funnies and Parade magazine I headed upstairs for my nap. After the nap I shoveled the drive and walk. The sidewalks are all iced over, except ours, so before taking my walk I put on my Yakima bear claws to help me walk on the ice. They work and I walked 3.3 miles. Today the hours of sunlight bottom out. We have 9h01' of daylight. It is the same until Christmas when the days start getting longer, 9h02'.

We had a great Trader Joe's soup tonight. I also had a couple of hot dogs. We watched 60 minutes and read the GRP. Nancy went to bed early 2010 but I stayed up and watched the first quarter of the football game.

Saturday December 18, 2010

Ms P and I are up at 0500. We do our chores go back to bed and get up with the alarm at 0630. This is the time Nancy has set so she can get to her early morning class at the MAC. I bundle up and head for Bill's for breakfast. I have pancake and eggs. I spend some time reading the DFP and WSJ. The DFP is still writing about the indictment of the ex-mayor, his father and cronies. It actually is good reporting.

On my walk home from Bill's it starts to snow and by the time I get home we have a thin dusting covering all hard surfaces. I take Ms P on a walk around the block. It is cold so she does not dilly-dally.

This is the type of day I have been dreaming about. It is dark, cold and snowing so I stay inside and catch up on my reading. Missy skyped us early today. I then got a phone call from Steve. We talked for about 35 minutes. Nancy was taking a nap when Steve called. She had some nerve pain in her foot last night so she did not sleep well. She was catching up by taking a nap. Ms P and I tried not to disturb her.

Later I called Debbie. She was working again on a Saturday. Debbie said they have had a lot of rain. I did catch up on some reading. I also read my mail and email and checked out my facebook. I do not use my facebook too much anymore. However, I did find an old high school classmate wanting to be my friend. I made him my friend and responded . The facebook format I think has changed. I clicked on a tab and I got a lot of photos of friends of friends. I only have about nine friends but must have 70 photos. It is confusing.

It was a dark gloomy day and every time I looked out the window I was glad I was inside my office. About 1500 I took a nap and after the nap I did go outside to shovel the walk. Nancy had already shoveled the top section of the drive. It only took about 20 minutes to finish the rest of the drive and walks. When I came inside Nancy was receiving a skype from the Scott Team. We had the opportunity to see Lucas and Alessandra.

For dinner tonight we went to the Brandywine. Nancy had the ham-d-scram and I had a club sandwich. We both brought some home. We watched a little TV and at 2100 headed upstairs.

Friday December 17, 2010

Ms P and I went out at 0510. It was not very cold about 27⁰. I got up for real at 0700. My walk to the MAC was uneventful. I did wish Kelley the crossing guard for IHM, Merry Christmas. Kelley is 83 years old and he is at Plymouth/Griggs every school day. After the workout I walked over to D&W's Starbucks for coffee. This morning's DFP continued articles on the ex mayors transgressions. It appears that his honor who is now in jail had a court appointed lawyer. We are providing legal help to a man who stole millions from taxpayers. His father is also being given a court appointed layer. Representative Conyers' wife was also given a court appointed attorney. Why can't the good congressman provide for his wife.

The corruption continues. The Detroit Water and Sewer System serves the greater Detroit area. The system is owned by Detroit but the majority of users live outside Detroit. Because of failure to comply with Federal Environmental regulations the System was put under Federal control many years ago. A Federal judge was suppose to manage the system. The good judge who just resigned at age 93 hired consultants to help him oversee the system. These consultants were paid handsomely. The ex-mayor and his buddies stole millions from the system. The DFP this morning asked where was the Federal oversight? Once again an example of Federal government incompetence. The suburbs are up in arms. The only solution is to create a regional authority.

On a happier note on this day, Friday, in 1962 I took the log flight from Midway Island to Pearl Harbor. After 1 year, 2 weeks, three days and 13 hours I was leaving Midway and heading to Alpena for a two week leave. Once the flight was airborne I pinched myself to determine if I was dreaming. An old Navy officer who sat across from me started to laugh and said yes it is real, we are leaving the island. I arrived in Alpena on Sunday morning. It was 70⁰ when I left Midway and below zero when I arrived in Alpena. I had two good weeks at home and then in early January I headed to San Diego for about 3 weeks of training before leaving for Vietnam.

Today, I got home about 1300 and after a quick lunch I got in the C2 and headed downtown. I had to pick up my contacts. I also stopped at the watch shop on Monroe Center to get a new battery and strap for my sports watch. When I got home I took Ms P on a walk around the block. Tonight Nancy and I are going to Olga's in Gaslight Village for dinner.

We both had Olga's peasant soup for dinner. Everyone should try the peasant soup. At home we watched a little TV and at 2100 we came upstairs.

Thursday December 16, 2010

I did not get up at 0500 as I usually do. When I did get up at 0630 Nancy had already taken Ms P out. It was 9⁰ when I left for the MAC. It was also very dark. I stopped to mail my Christmas card when I decided to check each letter to see if I forgot anything. I forgot to put a stamp on 2 cards. Another good reason to always check. After the MAC I walked over to the Starbucks at D&W and got a coffee and read the DFP and WSJ.

The DFP this morning exploded with several articles on a Federal indictment of the ex-mayor, his father and several buddies and contractors. Kilpatrick, father and son, milked the city for millions. The DFP had a field day with several articles on the grand jury deliberations and the strength of the Fed's case. It looks pretty convincing that father and son will do some hard time. They did not indict the ex-mayor's mother, Representative Kilpatrick.

The WSJ had an article on rare earth minerals. These minerals are needed for most green energy propulsion units. China has 95% of the known reserves. The USA did have a Ca mine but it was closed because of China selling the minerals at a cheap price. Now it appears that China will limit export or charge a premium. Folks are worried so they hope to get the CA mine reopened. It usually takes 7 years to go through the permitting process. All the goo-goo mush heads try and delay any mine. However, it looks that there is enough pressure that the mine will open sooner.

My walk home from D&W was very pleasant. The sun was out and temperature had risen about 15⁰. After a quick lunch I headed upstairs to my office and will remain here until Nancy and I drive to Russo's to purchase some bargain basement wine. After Russo's we will have dinner at Great Lakes Shipping.

We purchased our wine and had an enjoyable dinner at GLS. We both had the prime rib sandwich. I had a Blue Moon and Nancy had a glass of wine. We watched a little TV and headed upstairs at 2100.

Wednesday December 15, 2010

Ms P and I headed outside at 0430. On these cold mornings she continues to set speed records. The alarm went off at 0545. This is breakfast club morning. I left at 0630 and it was very cold and pitch black. This morning the speaker was the head of Calvin College's January series. The January series brings noted speakers to Calvin to talk about their area of expertise. They bring in 15 speakers. The lectures are free.

After breakfast club I head home and pick up Ms P and head for the bank, post office and Kava House for a quick coffee. I started writing Christmas cards and got two done before Nancy came home. At 1030 Nancy and I got in the Taurus and headed for Stanton, Michigan. We are attending a surprise retirement party for my friend, Tom Mayan. The party was well attended and I got to see folks from Montcalm, Gratiot and Clinton County. Tom's wife, Dorothy and two sons also attended. The lunch included: Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, rolls, and several great desserts. Tom was surprised. It was a very successful lunch.

I was yawning on my way home so Nancy suggested that I take a nap. I always follow Nancy's advice so I took a nap. After the nap I took a 30 minute walk. Walking was kinda tough because the sidewalks were all icy. The forecast said we will have below normal temps for the next week. I don't mind the temps but the slippery walks is another story.

We had a light dinner and I read the GRP. At 1930 I came upstairs and finished my Christmas cards. Yes folks Bob writes Christmas cards. It is now 2030 and I will head downstairs and take Ms P out and maybe watch some TV.

Tuesday December 14, 2010

Ms P is getting use to these cold mornings. She is in and out in 30 seconds. We should rename her speed P. This morning I walked to the MAC and when I finished I walked to Breton Village's Starbucks for coffee and to read this morning's papers. It was a beautiful winter's day. Plenty of sunshine and no wind made walking easy.

Nancy attended a lunch today with a vendor. When she got home we headed to the Apple Store in Woodland Mall. A nice young man attempted to show us how to load Nancy's address book into the itouch. When we got home we tried his method to no avail. We finally called the Apple service center and we were walked through the procedure for getting the address book on the itouch. It worked. Now Nancy can sit by the side of the pool in Hawaii and email all her friends in cold MI.

The DFP has periodically written stories about the proposed new Detroit River crossing. This bridge would be located several miles downstream from the existing Ambassador Bridge which is privately owned. The present Gov is for the new bridge but the new Gov has not really committed. An interesting lawsuit is making it through the courts regarding the newly built ramps to the Ambassador Bridge. MDOT wants the ramp torn down but the owner say forget it. Stay tuned.

I think the newspapers are taking a holiday breather. They appear very mellow. I attribute it to the season.

I keep thinking about writing Christmas cards but so far I have not written one. Maybe tomorrow! After dinner we watched the news, read the GRP and finished the evening watching NCIS. We headed upstairs at 2100.

Monday December 13, 2010

As soon as I opened the door at 0500 I knew that today is going to be the coldest day of the year. Ms P also knew because she only walked about 10 steps and then headed back to the door. Nancy and I had to shovel the drive and walk. Luckily the snow was light and fluffy. After shoveling I put on several layers and started walking to the MAC. I had the wind at my back so the wind chill did not bother me. However, I had too many layers on so I was sweating 1.5 miles into the 2.5 mile walk. I have to figure out how to dress on these cold mornings.

I rowed 5K this morning. This is the first time since June 17 that I have tried this distance. I had no pain. I think I will be back to normal by the middle of January. Instead of walking to the Kava House I had my morning coffee at Starbuck in the Breton Village D&W. After coffee I walked home. By taking coffee at the Breton Village I get home 35 minutes sooner than going to the Kava House. Walking is very time consuming.

Nancy attended a luncheon in Rockford this noon. I ate a quick lunch and then headed upstairs to the office. About 1600 I took a break and walked to the post office to mail Nancy's Christmas cards. The wind had died down so the walk was enjoyable. In fact it was a beautiful winter's day. The sun was out all day. Sunshine makes a day enjoyable.

I just talked to Debbie. She said she was swamped with work. It appears Apple makes money by overworking their employees. Debbie did say that she bought a new Apple laptop. She has not taken it out of the box.

Today is meatless Monday so I had cereal for dinner. Missy skyped us tonight. Skyping is a good way to stay in touch. We watched Hardball and House and at 2100 headed to bed. I did take Ms P out before coming upstairs. She does not dilly-dally on these cold nights.

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Sunday December 12, 2010

Ms P overslept this morning. When I got up with her I thought it was 0500. It was really 0600. Ms P did not stay out very long because it was snowing. Nancy and I went out about 0700 and shoveled the drive and walk. It was a heavy, wet snow, sometimes called a cardiac snow. We both swam 45 minutes this morning. For the first time in 6 months I was able to do the crawl. I did several laps with little pain.

We did not go to Meijer's this morning. I did let Nancy off and headed to the Kava House to get us each a coffee. I also filled the Taurus. Gas was $2.90 per gallon.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I had three eggs because they were large and not jumbo. After reading the funnies I headed upstairs to take my Sunday nap. After the nap I took Ms P on a walk around the block.

The weather is getting worse. The temperature at 0700 was 32⁰ and at 1700 it is 20⁰. It is also snowing hard. However, the weather did not stop me from taking a 3.5 mile walk.

Nancy is fixing a crab salad for dinner tonight. We will watch 60 minutes, read the GRP and probably head for bed about 2100.

I just checked the long term average mean temperature for December 12. It is 29⁰. From January 11 to January 31 the average mean temperature is flat lined at 22⁰. This is the coldest time of the year.

We have 9H04' of daylight today. The sun did not come out so it is real gloomy. That is why it is so important to get outside 30' on these gloomy days. I got my 30 in did you?

Saturday December 11, 2010

When Ms P and I went out at 0500 the temperature was above freezing. Since the temperature was above freezing I decided to ride my bike to Bill's. The economy must be improving because when I left Bill's every booth was filled. On my way home I pedaled to Gaslight Village to use the ATM at 53rd.

The birds are now starting to use our feeder so this morning I had to fill it up. We are expecting a big storm this evening. I hope to get my walk in before it starts snowing and blowing.

The big news in today's DFP was about the "Big Chill" hockey game at the "Big House". They hope to have over 100,000 at today's game despite the prediction of bad weather. Speaking of hockey it is nice to see the Original Six still having games. The Red Wings and Canadians just finished a home and home series.

The WSJ had an article about what Madoff's family and other folks involved with Bernie the Crook. I read the entire story and found it very interesting. When I got home I called up the "Daily Beast" on my computer and saw a story about Madoff's son just hanging himself. Missy also sent me some links on this story. Missy also sent us two Christmas card type photos of AJ. They were very cute.

Veronica just called and gave us an update on the Scott Team. Later Lucas called and talked with his grandparents. I finished our annual giving campaign and then walked to the post office to mail the checks.

I did watch part of the "Big Chill" game. It was fun to see over 100,000 folks watching a college hockey game. Around 1700 Nancy and I headed upstairs to get ready to go to the Namey's for dinner.

The dinner party was great. There were 8 people at the party. Mary had a pasta bar. We also had salad and a great dessert. Like most old folks parties we drank some and talked more. The party broke up at 2130. It was raining when we headed home.

Saturday, December 11, 2010

Friday December 10, 2010

About 0230 Ms P started barking and she headed downstairs. I also thought I heard a noise so I headed downstairs to check. I looked out the window and saw a snow plow working on the drive across the street. When Ms P and I went out at 0500 we had about 1 inch of snow on the ground. When I went back to bed I set the alarm for 0645. Nancy and I got up with the alarm and headed outside to shovel. The snow was light so we finished in good time.

I did not want to ride my bike in the snow so I walked to the MAC. After my MAC routine in walked to the Kava House. Today my walk/run total equaled 8 miles. I did not get home until 1315. I had a quick lunch and then headed downtown to pick up a new pair of glasses. I checked my email and found that I had a message from my friend Tom Mayan in Merrill. Tom's grandson made All State as a wide receiver for the Merrill Vandals. Tom enclosed a You Tube clip showing his grandson in action. He is a good football player.

I took a short nap and now Nancy and I must decide where we are going for dinner. I am going to vote for Olga's Kitchen. I lost we went to Panera Bread. After dinner we stopped at ABC Warehouse, PetSmart and Macy's. We got home about 1930. We watched TV until 2100 and then went to bed.

Friday, December 10, 2010

Thursday December 9, 2010

Boy it was cold when Ms P and I went out at 0500. The radio said it was 14⁰. I went back to bed to get warm and catch a few more Zs. I woke up for good at 0700. I really bundled up for my bike ride to the MAC. However, with only a mild wind, I did not get cold. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House for my morning coffee and paper. Actually my papers are on my Kindle. I think my morning ritual at the Kava House is something like the routine my grandfather Hughes followed. Every morning grandfather would go to the barber shop and get a shave.

After a quick lunch I took a nap. Nancy had a luncheon to go to today. After my nap I put some Christmas lights out and then took Ms P on a walk around the block. I dropped Ms P off and then took a two mile walk.
My sister sent her Christmas package today. Included in the package was some peanut brittle that Don Crandall had made. I had some and it was very good. Is there bad peanut brittle?

Tonight Nancy and I are going to Great Lakes Shipping for dinner. GLS was crowded tonight with a lot of Christmas Parties. After dinner we watched a little TV, read the GRP and at 2100 headed to bed.

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Wednesday December 8, 2010

Ms P and I followed our normal early morning routine and then back to bed. The next thing I remember is Nancy giving me a kiss as she was heading out the door. It was almost 0730. Today is my easy day so I got on the retro and pedaled to Bill's for breakfast. I had their "Super Special". Today was another cold day with the temperature in the 20s all day. After eating and reading the DFP and WSJ I got on the retro and pedaled to the 53rd bank in Gaslight Village. When I got home I headed upstairs so I would be out of Kim's way. Kim is cleaning the house.

Steve called this morning and we talked. He has some vacation days to use so he was home with two sick kids. I guess the kids are getting over their colds. I asked Steve if he had his tickets to the Rose Bowl. He said not yet.
I finished writing checks and then got in the C2 and headed to the MAC. I swam 30 minutes today.

This afternoon I have a 1400 GRBA meeting. On my way to the meeting I stop at the Lake Drive post office to mail our checks. Today's GRBA meeting is being held at 1120 Monroe. This building was recently rehabilitated. It was purchased by the city and now houses several community services offices on the third floor. The city has rented out the second and first floors. We got a tour of the building.

After the meeting I stopped by the office to give our contribution to the "Adopt a Family" fund. I got the opportunity to talk to the guys and gals. The crew was decorating a Christmas tree. Everyone was in good spirits. One thing I miss about retirement is the interaction with bright young folks. I am sure production rapidly improved once I left. It is great to see that everyone is busy.

Today Nancy's Book Club is having their Christmas party. Spouses are invited. We arrived at Judith's condo at 1800. There were 11 folks at the party. The food and drinks were great. Like most small parties the men and women separated into groups and discussed the issues of the day. No issues were resolved. We got home at 2130 and headed upstairs to bed. It was another nice day.

Tuesday December 7, 2010

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. I was 3 1/2 years old. This attack had a profound impact on the lives of every adult in the USA. Food, gas and other materials critical to the war effort were rationed. Nearly every male under the age of 30 was forced into the military service. The war was the major topic of adult conversation. My dad was drafted into the service as a civilian to work on the design, construction and maintenance of military bases in the Chicago area. He lived in Chicago about two years. The only reason dad was released from service was because the city manager of Alpena was drafted and dad replaced him. I think dad made about $4,000 per year.
We could not travel because gas was rationed. I remember my mother and her friends obtained some tobacco and a machine to roll cigarettes. They had a cigarette making bee. Cigarettes were rationed. Silk stockings were not available to women because silk was needed to make parachutes. Tires were made of rubber and because the Japanese had captured all the SE Asia rubber plantations, tires were not available.

Farmer's were given as much gas as they needed because we needed all the food that could be grown to feed the troops. Once we were visiting the farm and my grandfather offered my dad some gas for his car. This was illegal but we needed the gas to get back to Alpena. Doctor's were also given as much gas as needed because they made house calls (yes folks house calls). Ministers were also not subject to rationing. They had to minister to their flock.

Little Bobby Scott did not really suffer during the war. I remember I could only put 1 teaspoon of sugar on my oatmeal. I remember in school we collected paper for the war effort. If you collected a set amount of paper you were give a patch labeling you as a "Paper Trooper". Paper Troopers were cool. My friends and I played guns and the smallest kids had to be the Nazi or Jap.

Older men were members of the civil patrol. One of their duties was to stand patrol on top the city hall cupola. They were watching for German bombers. Women would have bees to make things for the troops. Every citizen was involved.

December 7, 2010: Ms P and I went out at 0450. I got up for real at 0710. I rode the retro to the MAC. After the MAC I rode to the Kava House. I got cold because the wind chill was in the teens. I am now getting warm because I have heater going full blast.

This afternoon I am writing checks. This is a job I don't mind because we are sending checks to local charities. At 1700 Nancy and I got in the Taurus and drove to Meijer's Garden to see the outside Christmas light display. It was very impressive. I think the Garden is a major community asset. After the Gardens Nancy cooked me a hamburger and some tomato soup. We read the GRP and watched NCIS. We headed to bed at 2100. I have a GRBA meeting tomorrow so I took some time to read tomorrows agenda.

Monday, December 6, 2010

Monday December 6, 2010

Last night the TV was full of Lake Effect snow warnings. The lake effect snow did not reach GR because when Ms P and I went out at 0500 the drive was bone dry. I got up for good at 0655 and dressed in layers because the temperature is going to be in the 20s all day. I got out the retro and pedaled to the MAC. I dressed properly because I did not notice the cold. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. I only read the DFP because I have several errands to run this afternoon.

I had a quick lunch and then loaded up the Christmas packages that are going to CA. I was surprised that the post office was empty. Normally you have to wait in line this time of year. After the post office I headed to the Ford dealer to get the Taurus serviced. The Ford dealer was not busy. I just got settled in to read the WSJ when they told me the car was finished. Bummer!

I stopped at the Kentwood bike shop to get some valve caps and check out speedometers. I also stopped at Gander Mountain to see if they had any warm underwear tops. They did not have anything that I would buy.

When I got home I hooked the wreath to Opa's wreath holder. It works slick. Ms P and I took a walk around the block. It is 0.4 miles around the block. I also took a 1.95 mile walk. I wore my gps and I am happy to announce that my average time was 15'53" per mile. This is a pb and I am now setting a goal of 15'.

Tonight was cereal night. After dinner we watched the news and a rerun CSI on cable. We headed to bed at 2100.

Useless weather information. Hours of daylight GR = 9h09'; Moscow, Russia = 7h14'. I got my 30 in, did you?

Sunday December 5, 2010

Sunday morning and I woke up at 0500 and Ms P and I preformed our chores and went back to bed. The alarm went off at 0645. We headed to the MAC for our swim. Nancy and I both swam 45 minutes. I am really liking the progress my shoulder has made since I started swimming. On Friday I did 15 pushups.

At Meijer's I filled the Taurus up. Gas was $3.01 per gallon. When we got home I got out the step ladder and got down a wreath holder that was made by Opa. I also took my At bike down the basement. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I read several sections of the paper and then took a nap.

After the nap I took the lights off the AT and put them on the retro. I think I will use the retro during winter months. It is smaller and easier to handle. Also the wide tires only carry 40pi which makes driving in snow easier.

I capped off the afternoon by going on a 3.25 mile walk. I wore my gps and made an effort to walk fast. My average time was 16'45" per mile. This is my fastest walking time. I have a ways to go because Debbie can walk at a less than 14' pace.

For dinner Nancy made a crab salad. It was great. We also had tomato soup. I watched 60 minutes and finished the GRP. At 2030 we headed to bed. It is now 2117 and I will take Ms P out and then head to bed.

Sunday, December 5, 2010

Saturday December 4, 2010

I got up at 0500 and performed my early morning routine. I set the alarm for 0630 because Nancy has a early morning class at the MAC. This being Saturday I headed to Bill's for breakfast. The roads are still not clear so I walked. It is about 2.3 miles to Bill's. I had their special and read both the DFP and WSJ.

After Breakfast I walked Ms P around the block. After our walk we got in the C2 and headed to Meijer's so I could pick up a prescription. The Kzoo/28st Meijer's, known as the 3rd world Meijer's, was jammed. When I got home I dropped Ms P off and then made a deposit at the bank and stopped by the Kava House to get Nancy a coffee.

I spent the afternoon in the office, reading catalogs and deciding what donations to make to various non profits this year. I tried to order some warm River Driver shirts from LL Bean but they were totally out.

I spent hours last winter putting the family tree on a piece of software called My Heritage. I found out after completing most of the work that the software company is located in London, England. I hope to spend some time this winter polishing the family tree. I want to put photographs of family members in the document. I found an email address and asked for a phone number so I can talk to a real person. Old folks need to have their computer questions answered by real people.

I really like my Apple itouch. I now have itunes on my computer and the nicest feature is the shuffle. I have 700 tunes and the shuffle really does mix up the tunes. I am now listening to a Irish folk tune. Previously I listened to Merl Haggard, Burl Ives, Glen Miller and Pete Fountain. Electronic toys are great.

It is now 1600 and I am getting restless. I will take a break and get in a 2.25 mile walk. After the walk Nancy and I headed to Russ's for dinner. The place was crowded. The median age was 76. We watched a little TV and then at 2100 headed to bed.

Friday December 3, 2010

I had too many fancy desserts last night. I did not sleep too well. I got up at 0530 to take Ms P out and found out that Nancy had already taken her out. I had my fiber drink and pill and went back to bed. I finally got up at 0718. It did not snow last night but the street were not clear so instead of riding my bike I walked to the MAC. After the MAC I walked to the Kava House. I got home about 1300.

I had an apple and then Nancy and I headed to Costco. At Costco we sampled their goodies and purchased some supplies. I bought a pair of lined pants, some contact lens supplies, Listerine and a case of Bell's Winter White Ale. I also purchased a hot dog. On our way home we stopped by the LMCU so Nancy could get some cash. Since I walked/ran 8.5 miles today I thought I deserved a nap. I took a short nap and then played on the computer until it was time to go to the OHNA TGIF.

The TGIF was well attended. I had the opportunity to talk to a lot of neighbors. Did you know that Wally Pipp lived on Giddings? Do you know who Wally Pipp was?

The gentlemen who own the home where the TGIF was held have beautiful wood floors. They said as soon as they bought the home they removed the carpeting. I asked if they sanded and finished the wood themselves. They said no, a contractor was hired. In fact the consensus of other folks who were listening was always hire a professional. I will tell Missy this advice. Missy removed her carpets and the wood floor looks great but they still need to be sanded and finished.

I think yesterday was the first time this winter season that the temperature stayed below freezing all day. I am quickly getting into my winter mode.

Thursday December 2, 2010

When Ms P and I got up at 0500 I shoveled the steep part of the hill. When I went back to bed I set the alarm for 0646 because I have a 1020 Doctor appointment. I got up with the alarm and Nancy and I finished shoveling. I drove to the MAC and did my full routine. After the MAC I drove to the Doctor's office. Today I am visiting my ear doctor. He cleaned my left ear and gave me a prescription for some drops that should prevent the skin in my ear from drying out and scaling.

I stopped by the Kava House and read the DFP and WSJ. The DFP this morning was almost giddy with optimism for the Detroit area. Employment is up and car sales are booming. However, the big question among my friends is what will the UM AD do about Rich Rod.

I had a quick lunch and then shoveled the walk and delivered a check from the OHNA to the newsletter publisher. I also took a 1.5 mile walk. Nancy was briefing the new OHNA treasurer when I got home. I took Ms P up stairs and we took a nap together. I spent several hours in my office checking my finances. It is now 1743 and in 30 minutes Nancy and I must get ready to go to a function at the Gardens.

The gala at the Gardens was great. The invitation said black tie optional but the majority of men were in suits. For food we had a choice of Asian, Greek, Mexican and traditional. Drinks were free and I drank several Bell's Winter White Ale. I really like this beer. Nancy and I walked around and looked at all Christmas displays from around the world. They Gardens had all their trees decorated with fancy lights. It was a fun evening.

Wednesday December 1, 2010

December came in with a bang. It snowed most of the night. The grass was covered with snow but at 0630 as I headed for Breakfast Club the snow was not sticking on the concrete. This morning we had a member talk about his wood working hobby. He showed some samples of his work. He uses exotic wood pieces and glues them together into interesting mosaics. He cuts, sands, glues and polishes the wood in his basement shop. The speaker was 87 years old and still travels, skis, plays in a band and of course works in his shop. At age 18 he was a Navy corpsman assigned to the Marines in the Pacific campaign. He was involved in all of the Marines operations in the south Pacific.

After breakfast I drove by the Farmer's Market to buy a Christmas wreath. The market was closed. I did stop by the Kava House so I could read the WSJ and DFP. When I got home the concrete was covered with about 2 inches of snow. I got out the shovel and performed my first snow shovel of the season.

It was too dangerous to bike to the MAC so I walked. I swam 45 minutes. I had a quick lunch and then retired to the office to check my email and go through my mail. I had the heater on and Ms P slept in front of the heater. Nancy worked at the Gardens this afternoon. When she got home I took out my two suits and asked which one she thought would be appropriate for the Gala at the Gardens tomorrow. Since we decided on my gray suit I polished my black shoes. At 1730 I took Ms P out and shoveled the drive and walk.

Nancy had to work at the Gardens tonight so I fixed a pb&j with a onion slice for dinner. Actually I fixed two. I also had a Bell's Winter Ale. I like Bell's beer.

I watched the news and read the GRP. When Nancy got home we watched Undercover at 2000 on NBC. It was bad. I can see why NBC has such low ratings. At 2040 we headed upstairs.

I remember another December 1 where the weather was very warm. In 1964 I had just gotten out of the Navy and working for Scott Engineering in Alpena. We had an emergency bridge job in Big Rapids. A milk truck had brought down the old bridge and we were hired to get the bridge open to traffic as soon as possible. The project started December 1 and it was 70⁰. Bill Cruise and I were setting out control points and I remember thinking this won't be so bad. The next day the temperature plummeted and we had a very cold winter. I never got warm all winter.

Tuesday November 30, 2010

It was warm and rainy this morning. I did not dress in layers but I did put on my rain pants for my ride to the MAC. This time of year I pedal to the MAC and take my afternoon walk in the dark. Despite the rain pants I got wet on my ride. It was still raining when I left the MAC for my ride to the Kava House. The weatherman said as the morning progressed we would encounter high winds and a major temperature drop. He was right.

After a quick lunch I got in the C2 and headed to the eye doctor. He gave me a thorough check up and changed my prescription. I complained that my 30 day contacts are great for the first 15 days and then they appear to lose some power. He said that despite my cleaning they were still getting a protein buildup. He gave me some drops to add to the cleaning solution that should solve my problem.

After the eye doctor I delivered a walker to Linda Moleski. She has a friend who needs a walker. Nancy was happy to let Linda use ours. I also stopped at Meijer's to get some beer and a bottle of the eye doctor's magic solution. I capped off the afternoon with a 2.25 mile walk. As I said earlier in the dark.

Tonight is left over night. I get to finish pizza and the beans and rice from last weekend. Nancy said that NCIS might not be on because of a Christmas special. Bummer!

You know you are getting old when you hide your financial papers before going away for a few days and then can't remember where you hide them. Another bummer! Good news after about 90 minutes of searching I found the papers. I picked a good hiding place.

Monday November 29, 2010

Monday morning and it is back to normal. Up at 0500, take Ms P out, drink my fiber and back to bed by 0515. I finally get up at 0700, get dressed and head to the MAC. It is suppose to get up to 40⁰ by 1500 today. At 0700 the temperature was below freezing. I was dressed in layers so I experienced no discomfort. The MAC was crowded this morning. Mostly folks who wanted to lose some Thanksgiving pounds.

I finally used up my $100 gift card at the Kava House. Both the DFP and WSJ had articles on major problems in the world. North Korea, wikileaks, money problems in Ireland and Spain, nuclear arms treaty and the deficit should keep the Feds busy. I think the solutions are easy. If we brought all the troops home, implemented the recommendations of the deficit committee and let the Bush tax cuts lapse. That's right no tax cuts for anyone. See how easy it is.

After lunch I changed clothes and starting doing some chores. I taped the leaking gutter, took the garbage down to the curb, got the snow shovels down and put up the rakes. I also hung up the wheel barrow. The garage is now almost clutter free. I also walked Ms P around the block and finished off the afternoon with a 2.25 mile walk.

Tonight was cereal night. I had frosted flakes but Nancy scrambled some eggs. I read the GRP and watched the news. At 2030 I headed to bed.

I got some sad news today. A high school classmate died this weekend. He was living in Bend, Oregon. This year four male classmates have passed. On a happier note we are having our 55th reunion next July.

Sunday November 28, 2010

My Thanksgiving break started Wednesday and ended today, Sunday. Nancy and I had a great time with Debbie, Missy and AJ in Lakewood, Ohio. What follows is a summary of our activities.

Wednesday November 24 and we slept in until 0700. We took our time loading the Taurus and finally got Ms P in and headed to Lakewood, Ohio. Our first stop was Panera Bread. We had a coupon and purchased coffee and selected our free sweet rolls. It was a dark gloomy day which was perfect for travel. We did not stop until the first plaza on the Ohio Turnpike. I filled the car up and we purchased more coffee. It is 298 miles to Lakewood and we arrived in the early afternoon. Debbie, Missy and AJ gave us a warm greeting. For dinner Wednesday we visited one of the many taverns along Detroit Ave. I had a hamburger and beer. Everyone turned in early.

Thursday November 25, Thanksgiving Day. For breakfast Nancy and I made a run to Dunkin Donuts for donuts and coffee. I was surprised they were open. After breakfast Missy started preparing the Thanksgiving dinner. I was going to go for a walk but it was raining. In fact it rained all day. I did not get my 30 minutes in.

I did perform my manly chore of stuffing and carving the turkey. It has been several years since I performed these chores but no one complained. My dad was always proud of his ability to carve a turkey. I must admit he was good. My carving ability leaves a lot to be desired. I always blame it on dull knifes. My Dad's answer would be you should know how to sharpen all your kitchen knives. I haven't sharpened a knife in years.

We sat down for dinner about 1400. I gave a toast and told a war story. My first Thanksgiving away from home was in 1961. I was in the Navy and on my way to Midway Island. I spent Thanksgiving Day at the Pearl Harbor Navy base and had Thanksgiving dinner in the BOQ. In 2010, however, I was having dinner with family. In my mind Thanksgiving is all about family. It was a great meal with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, apple salad and vegetables. As always I ate more that I should have. Everyone took a nap after all the food. We did have some pumpkin pie later and just before turning in we all had some ice cream.

Friday November 26, Black Friday. I got up at 0700 and walked to Caribou Coffee. I had my coffee along with an apple fritter and read the DFP and WSJ. When I got home all the girls were ready to go shopping. We got in Missy's SUV and headed to Wal-mart. After Wal-mart we stopped at Stein Mart. We had turkey sandwiches for lunch and at 1345 we all got in the car and drove Debbie to the airport. On our way home from the airport we stopped at Trader's Joes so we could purchase some supplies. We got ginger snap cookies, trail mix, peppermint tea and wine. Friday evening we stopped at another tavern along Detroit and had a hamburger and beer. It was a relaxing day.

Saturday November 27 and today is a travel day. We got up at 0700 and stopped at Dunkin Donuts for donuts and coffee. Missy and AJ like peanut donuts and chocolate donuts with sprinkles. Nancy likes glazed and I like my donuts plain.

Traffic was light on our way home. We stopped at Ikea in Canton and the discount mall west of Howell. I even purchased several items at the discount mall. We got home about 1600. After unloading the car I took a 1.5 mile walk. We had pizza for dinner. After watching some TV we headed to bed about 2100.

Sunday November 28. I took Ms P out at 0518 and then went back to bed. The alarm goes off at 0646 and we get up and head to the MAC. Nancy and I swam 45 minutes. We got back on schedule this morning and it felt good. At Meijer's I filled up the Taurus. It took 17 gallons. Gas was $2.84 per gallon. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. After my afternoon nap I helped Nancy deliver the OHNA newsletter. I then took a 3.25 mile walk. After the walk I moved my computer, printer and other stuff around on my desk top. I move things around about every six months. Moving is always good because then I have to clean the desk top.

Nancy fixed beans and rice for dinner tonight. It was very good. We had ginger snaps for dessert. I finished the GRP and watched 60 minutes. Between 2000 and 2100 I channel surfed. I even watched a portion of Sarah Palin's show on Alaska. At 2100 we headed to bed.

Tuesday November 23, 2010

I had a pretty restless night. I could not sleep so about 0230 I played games on my itouch for about 45 minutes. I took Ms P out at 0430. It was early but I thought because she did not do her bidness last night because of the heavy rain that her bladder was probably full. I returned to bed and got up at 0630. It was about 40 degrees this morning when I headed to the MAC. It was also very dark. I debated whether to wear lined pants. I chose the lined pants and it was a good decision. I think the temperature dropped 10⁰ on my way to the MAC. The wind was very brisk.

The favorite expression I heard at the MAC was "what a difference a day makes". A drop of 30⁰ has everyone talking. On my ride to the Kava House I had to ride into a heavy west wind. In fact I put the bike in low gear just to make some headway.

After the Kava House I had a quick lunch and then dropped a book off at the library for Nancy and bought a six pack at D&W. When I got home I took a nap. After the nap I packed for our trip to Lakewood. For dinner tonight Nancy and I headed to Great Lakes Shipping. On our way home Nancy could not find her purse so we headed back to GLS. The purse was safe and sound.

We read the GRP and watched NCIS before heading to bed. We hope to leave early tomorrow I order to miss some holiday traffic.

Monday November 23, 2010

1621: It is a very warm day with intermittent showers. It appeared dry when I got ready to go to the MAC. But to make sure I would not get wet I put my rain pants in the back pack. After the MAC as I was heading to the Kava House it felt like it would soon be raining so I parked the bike and put on the rain pants. It was just a light rain but when I got inside the Kava House it really started to rain. The rain came down in buckets. Today's DFP had several articles on an upcoming trial. It appears the ex mayor had many girl friends including a Federal appointed overseer of the Detroit Police Department. I don't think you could make this stuff up.

I got home at 1300 and after a quick lunch I got in the C2 and headed to the post office. I mailed a package to the grandkids in Long Beach. After the post office I stopped at Rylee's to buy some tape to stop our gutters from leaking on the stairs near the garage. The water freezes and creates a hazardous condition. It started to rain hard while I was in the store so I started to look around. I met a neighbor who lives at 1555 Alexander. He was in the seabees in Vietnam so we stopped and talked. After Rylee's I stopped by MC to see if they had any M sweatshirts. They had nothing that I liked so I came home. It is now 1632 and I am going on a 2.25 mile walk.

Nancy made oatmeal in the crock pot. It was very good. We watched a little TV, read the GRP and then headed to bed.

Sunday November 21, 2010

1727: Today was a dark gloomy day. The temperature was above normal and reached 50 in GR. Sunday is like every other day except that I set an alarm for 0646. We want to get to the MAC as soon as it opens at 0800. We had one little diversion this morning, Ms P threw up and we had to change some bed sheets. She seem to have an upset stomach about every 10 days.

Today we have a 0930 breakfast with Tom and Linda so instead of swimming 45 minutes we swam 30 minutes. We got to the Brandywine on East Beltline at 0930. The place was not too crowded but 30 minutes after we got there they had a long waiting line. Timing is everything. We had a nice breakfast and spent about 90 minutes talking and eating.

After breakfast we headed to Meijer's for our weekly supplies. I topped off the Taurus and gas was $2.89. We did not purchase much so we were able to use the express checkout lanes. When we got home I read several sections of the paper and then took my Sunday nap. Like yesterday I had a very sound sleep, 60 minutes.

Nancy purchased a book that allows her to record in her voice the story. The grandkids will get the book and when they open it up they can listen to grandma reading the book. It is a great idea. Nancy needed some quiet to record the story so I took Ms P and sat in the back room and watched the Lions. It was pathetic. Are the Lions cursed or just bad?

I finished the afternoon with a 3.2 mile walk. I over dressed so I had to take a shower. Tonight we are having soup and sandwiches for dinner. We will watch 60 minutes and hope something good is on between 2000 and 2100. Nothing good was on. I did watch nature show on leopards on PBS. At 2100 we headed to bed.

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Saturday November 20, 2010

I got up at 0500 and followed my weekday routine by returning to bed at 0515. I woke for good at 0700. This morning being Saturday I got on my bike and headed to Bill's. I had their pancake and eggs. I read both the DFP and WSJ. I like Bill's because they keep filling up my coffee without any complaints. I usually spent about an hour eating and reading.

When I got home I loaded Ms P in the C2 and we headed to Rylee's. I purchased some wood screws for the back door hinges and also a package of GR leaf bags. I replaced the screws in the back door hinges. Nancy was back from the MAC when I finished the hinges so I left Ms P off and headed to the Mall. Nancy said Macy's had a big sale. The mall lot was full but I did not see anything in Macy's that I wanted to buy. On my way home I stopped at the furniture liquidation sale to see if the swivel rocker was still available. It had been sold so I came home.

Our maple tree in the front planter had finally shed most of its leaves. I got out the rake and filled two GR leaf bags. I think I am done raking for the year. Ms P was outside with me most of the time I was raking. The neighbor kids stopped by to pet Ms P. She is very popular with the under 7 group, especially the girls. After the raking I took a nap. I slept for about 60 minutes. It was my first really sound sleep in some time. I finished the afternoon with a 3.25 mile walk. It was a great day for a walk.

Nancy and I had dinner tonight at Panera Bread. The place was crowded. I had a black bean sourdough bread bowl and Nancy had a bowl of chicken noodle soup. I did watch a part of the UM/UW game. UM does not play defense.

It is now 2056 and I will finish this blog and head downstairs to watch some TV. Tomorrow Nancy and I are meeting Tom and LInda Moleski for breakfast. We will have to swim only 30 minutes In order to get to the Brandywine by 0930. Tonight we have a big bright full moon. Is it a harvest moon? Gas is now $2.71 per gallon.

Friday Novmeber 19, 2010

Yes folks it is finally Friday. I followed my normal routine and was home from the Kava House by 1230. Ms P and I took a 1.1 mile walk today. This is the longest walk we have taken in months. She did not seem to have any problem with the walk. It was cold today so I did wear my lined pants. In fact I got on line in the afternoon and ordered another pair from Woolrich.

Nancy had a 1430 hair appoint. She continues to wear her hair short which is the way I like it.

About 1530 we got in the Taurus and headed downtown. Our first stop was the GR Symphony office to buy tickets for the New Year's Eve concert. Next we found a parking spot in the Ottawa/Ionia Ramp and walked across the street to the GR Art Museum. We bought an annual membership. We stayed and walked through the museum. We purchased a groupon ticket to J. Gardella's Tavern so we had dinner at this fine establishment. I had the perch dinner and Nancy had a chicken sandwich. I also had several Blue Moon beers. Our tab came to $3.79. After dinner we headed home and watched a little TV before heading to bed.

Thursday November 18, 2010

Last night Ms P was missing from her bed. We think she was sleeping in a bed recently used by Missy and AJ. Nancy thinks that their smell still lingers. I got up at 0500 and did my morning chores and then went back to bed until 0700. It was quite cold this morning when I left for the MAC. It was also dark and I had to use all my lights. The MAC was empty this morning so I got done earlier than normal. If I don't have anyone to talk to I get right to business.

I read the DFP and WSJ at the Kava House. I did not find any article that I thought worthy of my comment. I got home about 1230. I had a quick lunch and Ms P and I headed upstairs to my office where I am now writing this blog. I have the space heater going full blast because I got very cold riding my bike this morning. I think I will start having to wear lined pants in the future.

Nancy is attending a luncheon this afternoon. We will have an early dinner at Great Lakes Shipping because we have to attend an OHNA meeting this evening at 0700. I did squeeze in a 2.25 mile walk this afternoon.

After dinner Nancy and I attended the OHNA meeting at the new elementary school. We met in the gym which is very nice. There were about there were 35 members in attendance. I volunteered for the street light committee. We got home about 2015. At 2100 we came to bed. It is going to get down to the low 20s tonight.

Finally we had a dark, cold and gloomy November day. I enjoyed having time to spend catching up on my reading and doing inside things.

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Wednesday November 17, 2010

Breakfast Club morning and I get up at 0500 to let Ms P do her bidness and then take my fiber and pill. I am back in bed by 0515 and then get up with the alarm at 0545. It was pitch black when I left this morning. This morning a Breakfast Club member who is an avid sailor, the Rev Maurice Fetty, talked about his sailing experiences on Lake Michigan and Long Island Sound. During his talk he interspersed comments on Armistice Day and Thanksgiving. It was a great presentation.

After breakfast I came home loaded Ms P in the C2 and ran some errands. When we got home from the errands Ms P and I walked around the block. It started to rain and thunder when we were halfway around the block. Ms P and I ran home. As soon as we got home the sun came out. At 1130 I pedaled to the MAC for a 45 minute swim. I still cannot do the freestyle stroke but my breast stroke is getting quite good. After a quick lunch I took a short nap.

Nancy had to work at the Gardens this afternoon. She got home about 1645. As soon as she got home I headed out on a 3.25 mile walk. At the corner of Pontiac and Gladstone I saw a huge Hawk in an Oak Tree. I watched the bird for several minutes and then it flew off. I think it was a Cooper's Hawk. I got home at 1750 and for the last 30 minutes it was pitch black. I might need a flashlight on future last afternoon walks. The days will continue to get shorter for the next 34 days.

This afternoon I checked the Alpena News on line edition. They have a new web site and it is very good. They have archived the obituaries and anniversaries for the past two years. I check the anniversaries and saw that my old high school football coach had just celebrated his 60th. Also a high school classmate, Pete Dent, had celebrated his 50th. Pete set the MI high school record for the 100 yard and 220 yard dash in his senior year. His high school record for these distances still stands. Pete and wife celebrated their anniversary by going on a fishing trip to BC, Canada.

This evening we watched the news and read the GRP. At 2000 we watched an action show on Fox. It was not too bad. At 2100 we headed to bed.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Tuesday November 16, 2010

I am back in business. I decided that my space bar problem was caused by a default in the space bar key. I changed keyboards and everything is working fine. Ms P was extra hyper last night and it took several hours to get her settled down. As a result of her hyperactivity I slept in until almost 0720 this morning. It was cool this morning but still above 32. I wore gloves on my bike ride but if the temperature continues to drop I will change to mittens. The MAC was almost empty this morning. I got done in record time. I must announce that for the first time in almost a five months I can now do a push up. This is a major milestone on my road to recovery.

Today is free refill Tuesday at the Kava House. I read both the DFP and WSJ. I continue to enjoy the WSJ especially the articles about commodities. I have a big interest in mining and agricultural activities around the world. The WSJ does seem very nervous about the progress China is making on the economic front. They think that China will surpass us and my grandkids will not experience the prosperity that my generation enjoyed. Time will tell, but I think that when we finally get serious and forget all the silliness, we will successfully respond to this challenge. I remember Sputnik in 1957 and how we responded to the Soviet space challenge.

After lunch I got in the C2 and drove out to Alto to see Jennifer Dougherty. Jennifer looks great even after all the trials and tribulations she has experienced with Cabel. I got to see Cabel and he is a cute lad. We talked about work and the prospects for the coming years. I am always optimistic. After my trip to Alto I stopped by Meijer's to pick up a prescription. They had not filled it so I came home and took a short nap.

I really don't care about William and Kate. My folks left the UK because they wanted a meritocracy and not success determined by hereditary. Down with the royal family!

For dinner Nancy cut up some chicken left over from the Saturday night dinner, added some pasta and vegetables, mixed them all together and made a tasty dish. We watched the news, read the GRP and then watched NCIS. After NCIS we headed to bed.

Monday November 15, 2010

Nov 15 the first day od deer season. As a boy growing up in Alpena nov 15 was a big day. My dad's office was closed because all men were at camp. My dad was no exception. He usually spent the first week at camp. My mother and her friends played bridge while the mem were in camp. The women were called hunter widows.

However, today was like any other Monday in the Scott household. When I got home from the Kava House, I had a quick lunch and then started raking leaves. I filled three bags and then raked a big pile that Nancy used to put over her rose bushes.

After completing my chores I got in the C2 and headed to the chow hound to buy some food for Ms P. Today was the last day to use a $5 coupon. I finished the afternoon with a two mile walk.

I am writing this blog on my itouch. I am having a problem with my computer. I cannot make a space between words. Any suggestions? I did put new batteries in my keyboard and this did not work.

SundayNovember14,2010

Our Indian Summer is over. We woke up to low temperatures, 40s, and high winds. It was sprinkling when we left for the MAC this morning. After all her work yesterday Nancy made it an easy day today. She swam 30 minutes and I swam 45 minutes. After the MAC we headed to Meijer's for our weekly supplies. I also filled the Taurus up. Gas was $2.99 per gallon. Gas prices have bounced up and down all week. It has been as low as $2.91 and as high as $3.09.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast this morning. I read several sections of the paper and then headed upstairs to take my Sunday afternoon nap. After the nap I walked Ms P around the block. I am in need of several sweatshirts. I am trying to get a UM sweatshirt that only has a small block M. I cannot find one. I drove to Centerpointe Mall and looked in Old Navy and Dunham's but could not find what I wanted. When I got home I decided I needed to get my 30 in so I went on a 3.5 mile walk. It was cool and blustery. I did note that our maple trees is finally giving up its leaves. I will fill several bags tomorrow afternoon.

This evening we are having Trader Joe's tomato soup for dinner. We will watch the news, 60 minutes and finishing reading the GRP.

The days are getting shorter. Today we have 9h 46' of daylight. In St Petersburg, Russia they have 7h 34' of daylight. Now that is a short day.

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Saturday November 13, 2010

Saturday morning and it is going to start out as a nice day. The temperature at 0700 was 46⁰. I checked Nov 13 and the avg. high is 47⁰, avg. low 32⁰ and the mean temperature is 39⁰. According to the weather folks we are getting back to normal temperatures. Today I am going on a long bike ride because it might be my last chance this year. First I have to eat breakfast so I pedal to Bill's for their potatoes and eggs special. When I get home I let Ms P out and she immediately runs across the street and nearly gets hit. From now on I am putting a leash on her until she learns the street must be avoided.

I load the At on the C2 and head for Riverside Park. Today I pedaled to Rockford. It is 11.2 miles from Riverside Park to the trails intersection with Bridge Street in Rockford. It is a nice day for a ride. The leaves are off the trees so I can see the Rogue River from the trail. Traffic on the trail was very light.

After my ride I stopped by D&W in Gaslight Village and was surprised the parking lot was full. Then it hit me the lot was full because of all the folks attending the EGR/Zeeland football game. I bought some beer for tonight's party. Nancy, as usual, was well organized and I didn't have to do anything except take out the garbage. I took my shower and a short nap. I even listened to the UM game on the radio. They won.

The guests arrived at 1800 and we had wine and snacks before the main dinner. Everyone was in a good mood and Nancy had prepared a great meal. After the meal we retired to the living room and had coffee and talked. The last guest left at 2130. After a quick cleanup we headed upstairs. It was a long day for Nancy and she worked hard preparing the meal. As usual everything went off without a hitch. She should be proud.

Friday November 12, 2010

Today I did the up at 0500 do some chores and then back to bed until 0700. I knew it was Friday because I was a little sluggish doing my exercises. However, I did get everything done and I was at the Kava House by 1100. I continue to read about the committee studying how to lower our deficits and the more I read the more I like. I am happy to report that we had another beautiful Indian Summer day.

After lunch I loaded Ms P in the C2 and headed to Bill and Paul's to look for some lightweight summer pants. Needless to say they did not have any but I could buy some great snow pants. I wanted the lightweight pants for our trip to Hawaii this December. After Bill and Paul's I stopped by the MAC to put next week's workout clothes in my locker and bring this week's dirty clothes home. When we got home Nancy had arrived and so she laid out some chores I must do before our dinner party tomorrow night. I did call Jennifer Dougherty to get an update on how things were going since they got back from AA. She was happy to report that all aspects of her life are back to normal and going as good as could be expected.

I need some new sweatshirts so I got in the C2 and headed to the "Let's Go Blu" shop in Grandville. When I got to the store the sign said they were closed. Why didn't I call first?

Tonight Nancy and I had dinner at Olga's in Gaslight Village. The meal was good. We both had the peasant soup and I also had an Olga Original. Not much on TV tonight so I read the GRP and then took a 1.5 mile walk. It was warm and cloudy. For the first time in a week I could not see the moon.

On November 11, 1955 I played my last football game for AHS. We played Hamtramck. Hamtramck is a city completely surrounded by the City of Detroit. In 1955 it had one of the largest concentration of Polish people outside of Poland. We played Hamtramck because Alpena had a very large Polish population. It was a high scoring game but we did prevail. The one thing I do remember is that it was very cold. I think the temperature was in the 20s. The Hamtramck team kept the team bus running with the heater going full blast. Periodically team members would go into the bus to warm up. Of course us hardy northerners stayed outside and endured. Oh the things we remember.

The Daily Beast today had an article entitled "Boy's Self-Esteem Crisis". Girls are doing better in high schools than boys and thus can get into better schools. In fact there are more women in college now than boys. When I went to UM women made up about 30% of the enrollment. I think one of the problems is the difficulty in getting into schools like UM. I have been told that a 4.0 average is required. I think this is nonsense. Most boys do not place grades as a high priority in high school. I think that if a student is in the top 25% of his class that they should be allowed to go to any public college in the state. I think by college most boys have settled down and are ready to get serious.

Jennifer Dougherty pointed out an error in yesterdays blog. I said WWI ended in 1911. In fact WWI ended in 1918. The term 11/11/11 stands for the eleventh day/the eleventh month and the eleventh hour.

Thursday November 11, 2010

I followed the normal morning routine. Today being Veteran Day the Kava House offered free coffee to all veterans. I got my free coffee and then I got a phone call from Melissa wishing me a Happy Veterans Day. This is the first time that anyone called me to wish me a Happy Veterans Day.

Next year Veterans Day will be 11/11/11, exactly 100 years since the end of WWI, the war to end all wars. Did you know that nearly all WWII vets are older than 84? I was disappointed during the last election that ending our current involvement in the Middle East was not a big issue. However, I did read that the current bipartisan committee studying ways to lower our debt is recommending massive cuts in defense spending. I really like the recommendations that the committee is proposing. I hope our representatives have the guts to implement most of the recommendations. I am not optimistic.

I got home from the Kava House about 1245. I walked Ms P around the block and then ate a quick lunch. I was going to run some errands this afternoon. I started by stopping by the ATM. It was such a nice day, another one, that I said the heck with the errands I was going on a walk. I took at 2.25 mile walks. For dinner tonight Nancy and I headed to Great Lakes Shipping. I watched part of the Red Wings game and then headed upstairs at 2100.

Wednesday November 10, 2010

Wednesday and no Breakfast Club today so I will eat at Bill's. I got up at 0500 and took Ms P out and then back to bed. I finally got up at 0710. I got dressed and ready to pedal to Bill. I mentioned to Nancy that I called yesterday and got an appointment with my ear doctor. My left ear causes me problems about once a year. I cannot hear out of the left. Nancy said she could fix that so she got out the ear flushing hardware and flushed some water into my ear. After several tries we noted that nothing was coming out. However, I thought I could feel a piece of wax. I got a flashlight and Nancy inspected the ear and could see a big plug. She got out a little tool that you insert into the ear and it grabs the plug. I had never seen it before but she said she used it on the kids ears. Sure enough she reached in and pulled out a big wad of ear wax. I can now hear out of my left ear. Thanks to Nancy's home remedies.

I had the weekday special at Bill's. I also read the WSJ and DFP. On my way home I took a side trip around Reeds Lake. Kim, the cleaning lady, came today. So to get out of her way I dressed for the GRBA meeting this afternoon and then got in the C2 and headed to the MAC. I swam for 30 minutes. The GRBA meeting was a 1400. The meeting lasted about an hour. When I got home I took Ms P around the block. After Ms P's walk I took a 1.5 mile walk. On my walk I received a phone call from Jim Kloote a bridge contractor. Jim married Mike O'Donnell 's daughter. Mike is from Alpena and is two years older, The O'Donnell's lived on State Street near our home. It was a social call and we filled each other in on what was happening in our lives. Jim, just this week, was made a member of the Doctor's Club. The Doctor's Club is one of the oldest hunting clubs in NE Michigan. It was nice of Jim to call.

Nancy has book club this evening so I am having beer and pizza with Tom. Tom and I had a good time at Vitales eating pizza and drinking beer. I got home at 1945 and Nancy got home soon after. I took Ms P out before going to bed. While outside I enjoyed watching the beautiful crescent moon. At 2100 we headed upstairs.

Tuesday November 9, 2010

It is getting to be a routine. Up at 0500 take Ms P outside, drink my fiber, take my pill and back to bed until 0700. The stars were out at 0500 and the temperature was in the high 30s. I pedaled to the MAC today and about the half way point I noticed that my handle bars were loose. My rear view mirror on the handle bar kept moving. I could easily move the bar. I was worried that the handle bar might come off and then I would take a big fall. I was going to stop and walk the bike when I remembered that I had a jack knife type set of tools. I stopped got out the handy dandy tool and found an Allen wrench that fit the handle bars and tightened everything up. Another disaster diverted by my foresight.

I got to the Wealthy Steet/ Breton Road light when who should I see but Pam Schwaderer, the Doctor's wife and Carol Masten. They were walking around Reeds Lake. Dr Shwaderer had given me a gift certificate to the Kava House and I told Pam that I still was using it. It was a great gift. I got to the Kava House by 1030 and had plenty of time to read the WSJ and DFP.

After lunch today I cleaned up my office and then loaded up the AT on the C2 and headed to Kent Trails/Millennium Park bike path. It was a beautiful fall day for a bike ride. In fact it was an absolutely perfect fall day. I finished my ride about 1645 and the sun was rapidly setting.

Nancy used a new crock pot we got Sunday at Meijer's to fix dinner last night. I read the GRP and then watched NCIS. At 2100 we all headed to bed.

Monday November 8, 2010

I did another wake up at 0500 and then back to bed. I headed to the MAC at 0730 and the sun was shining brightly. During my youth we did not have DST. DST was not in effect in Michigan until 1973. I like DST because in the summer we have more after work daylight. However, DST ruined the Drive In Movie business. I have fond memories of Drive In Movies.

It was cold this morning with temperature in the low 30s. The weatherman said it would warm up rapidly so I did not have to layer up this morning. At the Kava House I read several articles in the WSJ that were of interest to me. The first was how the alternative energy industry is existing only because of taxpayer money. Why can't these industries survive without Fed support? The Feds also are trying to build transmission lines for their new installations. I think transmission lines should be paid for by the utility.

The WSJ likes to pick on CA. They continue to highlight the serious financial problems the state is facing. They do not think the new Gov can or wants to solve their problems. Public employee unions are high on the WSJ's hit list.

I had a quick lunch this noon and then started to run some errands. I took a sample of Ms P's poop to the Vets. I then bought a cheap stop watch at the mall. I also bought a short leash for Ms P. I stopped at Klingman's to look for a swivel rocker. They were too pricy for me. When I got home I walked Ms P around the block. I then strapped on my GPS and went on a 2.25 mile walk. My mile time was 18'14".

Tonight was cereal night. Nancy is tired of cereal so she had a frozen dinner. Not much on TV so we headed to bed early.

Sunday November 7, 2010

Today marks the end of DST. I reset the new alarm clock in my room before going to bed. When I got up about 3 I checked the clock and saw that it had automatically turned back a hour. So I had to move the clock ahead. Confused yet! Ms P and I got up at 0500 EST. We went outside and although it was pitch black I knew we were going to have a beautiful day. The stars were extremely bright. After our 0500 chores I headed back to bed. The alarm went off at the proper time, 0646, and Nancy and I got ready for our swim.

We both swam 45 minutes and in keeping with our Sunday schedule we stopped at Meijer's to get our weekly supplies. We needed some extra food because we are having two couples over for dinner next Saturday. I filled the Taurus up today and gas was $3.09 per gallon. That is $0.30 more than at the start of last week. I also returned 48 bottles.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I let Ms P lick some of the yolk off the plate. I read a section of the GRP and then headed upstairs to take my Sunday nap. It was such a beautiful day that I took a 3.25 mile walk after the nap. I strapped on my GPS and determined that my mile pace was 17'54". Last night Mary Namey said that her mile pace was about 14'50". That is 3 minutes faster than my pace. I think 14'50" is what Debbie can walk. I don't think that I could walk 16' miles. I will keep practicing.

We are having hamburgers for dinner tonight. The hamburgers were delicious as were the baked beans. After dinner I finished the GRP and then watched a delayed 60 minutes. At 2100 Bob and Nancy headed upstairs.

Saturday November 6, 2010

It was very cold this morning so I wore my Under Armor turtleneck and lined pants. I also put the ear muffs on the snowboard helmet I wear in cold weather. I stayed warm on my pedal to Bill's but my headlight burned out and I had to be very careful. At Bill's I had the breakfast special, eggs, potatoes, link sausage and toast I got home from Bill's about 0930 and Nancy was already home. She wanted a cup of coffee so I headed to the Kava House and got us both a coffee. After the Kava House I drove to Rylee's Hardware to get some yard bags and a special insert that keeps the bags open when I am filling them. I also drove to Woodland Mall to visit the new North Face store that had just opened. It was a disappointment. I did purchase a pair of cold weather walking boots for this winter. I got the boot's at the Track' n Trail store in the mall.

Nancy and Mary Namey are working at a sale at Meijer's Garden this afternoon. Ed Namey picked Nancy up about 1215. I spent the afternoon raking leaves. I finished about 1530. It was a beautiful fall day.

After a quick shower I got dressed and headed to Meijer's to pick up Nancy and Mary. We headed to Marco's to meet Ed Namey for dinner. We had a great dinner. After dinner we returned to our house for coffee and cookies.

Friday November 5, 2010

I am back to my early rise at 0500 and then return to bed for another hour of sleep. It was cold and black when I left for the MAC this morning. I got about halfway there when I noticed that it was snowing. This is the first snow of the 2010/2011 winter. Of course nothing is sticking but snow is snow.

In addition to the snow I was almost blown off the road by the high wind. Luckily the wind was out of the north and my ride to the Kava House is mostly east/west. I hurried through the WSJ and DFP because I had to be home by 1200. Today I am taking Ms P to the Vet for her annual physical. Ms P was shaking when we entered the Vet's office. Like a people physical the Doc looked at her mouth, ears, nose and other body parts. Her heart was checked and the Doc drew some blood and also gave her a shot. She is now up to date on her shots. I must collect a stool sample next week and we won't know the results of the blood work until next week. The preliminary verdict is that Ms P is one healthy dog. She weighs 10 pounds which is a good weight for a doodle.

When we got home we picked up Nancy and headed to Costco. Nancy got some Halloween pictures developed and filled a prescription. I bought a pair of pants. On our way home we stopped at Chase Bank so Nancy could make a OHNA deposit. When we got home I took a 1.5 mile walk.

Nancy wanted to go to Kohl's tonight so we decided to eat first at Panerra Bread and then head to Kohl's. I had the sourdough bread soup bowl (clam chowder) and Nancy had a bowl of chicken noodle soup. The place was very crowded. After soup we headed to Kohl's and then home. Not much on TV so we headed to bed early.

Thursday November 4, 2010

This morning I have an appointment to bring the C2 to Berger Chevy so they can fix a power steering problem. The C2 is under recall. I had the car into Berger at 0745. They say it would take 1.5 hours so I walk to the MAC, a distance of 1 mile. This morning I rowed 20 minutes. Before the fall I was rowing 20 minutes, actually 4K, every day. It felt good. However, my happiness was lessened when I was talking to a young doctor at the MAC. I was explaining my recovery and he checked by pushing and shoving on my shoulder. I felt some pain and he said that I probably had a rotator cuff problem that might require surgery. I explained that I was going to avoid the knife at all costs. I hope that over time the shoulder will heal.

After the MAC I walked back to Berger and picked up the C2. I stopped by the Kava House and read the DFP and WSJ. When I got home I was going to take Nancy to Costco but I saw by her calendar that she was working at the hospital. So I got Ms P and we headed to Home Depot to look at their selection of storm doors. I hope to put on a new east side storm door this winter. The existing door is in tough shape. Our next stop was Staples where I bought some supplies for my office. When I got home I played around the office and then took a 1.5 mile walk.

This evening Nancy and I had dinner at Great Lakes Shipping. I had the French dip and Nancy had the Chinese chicken salad. At home I started reading the paper and immediately fell asleep. I slept almost an hour. Not much in the paper and we came upstairs at 2100.

On this date in 1955 the Alpena High Wildcats football team traveled to Bay City to play Bay City Handy. We won handily and I got to play the whole game. We had snow that week but the field had been cleared before the game. My Uncle Harold and Aunt Helen from Alma made a special trip to Bay City to see me play. I was very excited about them attending.

It has been below freezing the past several mornings. Nancy and I are getting out the cold weather gear.

Wednesday November 3, 2010

The alarm goes off bright and early this morning. I get right up because today I have Breakfast Club. I take Ms P out and bring Nancy her morning coffee. I am on my way downtown at 0640. The turnout for today's Breakfast Club was low. Maybe too many election parties? I sit with the same folks every time we have a meeting. There are 8 people at each table. This year four of us have either fallen flat on our face or crashed their bike. Everyone had to have stitches for their injuries. I am the youngest. We must get clumsy in our old age.

After the meeting I came home and intended to catch up on my mail. However, the weather seemed nice so I took a 3 mile walk. After the walk I did read some mail (10%). Nancy got home about 1130 and she had breakfast and at 1230 I drove her to Meijer's Garden. Nancy is working this afternoon. After I dropped Nancy off I was heading to the MAC for a swim when I noticed that a warning light came on. The warning said the air in the Taurus's tires was low. At the MAC I checked the tires and they all seemed fine. I swam for 40 minutes today. After the swim I took the Taurus to Fox Ford to have them check out the warning light. They checked the tire pressure and all four tires were 5 psi low. They filled up the tires and I was on my way.

I stopped by a furniture liquidation sale. I almost bought a leather swivel rocker. However, the rocker was also a recliner. I did not want a recliner in the office.

At 1530 I drove to Meijer's to pick up Nancy. We then headed to a warehouse paper sale. The sale location was across from the Cottage Bar. The place was jammed so I let Nancy off and drove around until I found a parking spot. I think there were 400 women at the sale and only two men. Nancy said if I drove her she would buy dinner at the Cottage Bar. Nancy made her purchases in under 30 minutes. It was too early for dinner so we came home. I took a Cottage Bar rain check.

It will be interesting to hear all the commies on MSNBC explain the election results. I was happy with the results. Congress was out of control. Not much on TV so we headed upstairs at 2100. I got my 30 in today did you?

Monday, November 1, 2010

Monday November 1, 2010

Once again I woke up at 0500. I did my morning chores and then went back to bed. The alarm went off at 0600 and I got up and headed to the MAC. This was the earliest I have been to the MAC in ages. A lot of the early risers asked where I had been. I said I was enjoying my retirement by sleeping in. This morning I increased my rowing time to 18 minutes. The row was painless. On Thursday I will increase the time to 20 minutes. The shoulder is getting better.

I got home before 1000 we piled into Missy's suv and headed to Bill's. We had the breakfast special and AJ had a modified kid's breakfast. We spent about an hour eating and talking. AJ is really good sitting in a restaurant. After breakfast Missy finished packing. After Nancy got home we said our goodbyes and Missy and AJ headed to Ohio. It was enjoyable having Missy and AJ this weekend. Ms P was sad to see them leave. She has been moping around all evening.

Yesterday I raked some leaves so I took the bags down to the curb. Nancy worked in the yard this afternoon and she filled a bag. I drove to Rylee's this afternoon to purchase a stud finder and some sheet metal screws. I reattached the gutter downspout this afternoon. I also got out my electric chain saw and cut up the wood post that supported Aunt Judy's dinner bell. I am going to buy a new post. I recently had the bell welded back together and painted. I intend to hang it in the back yard.

After my yard work I took a 3 mile walk. Not much on TV tonight so I headed upstairs at 2000 to catch up on my blogs. I want to go to bed early so that I can set the alarm and get up at 0600. It was another beautiful fall day.

Sunday October 31, 2010

Nancy and I got up at 0645. At 0740 we headed to the MAC. We both swam 45 minutes. After the MAC we headed home and picked up AJ and Missy and headed to Meijer's. I filled the Taurus up. Gas was $2.81 per gallon. After Meijer's Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs on toast. AJ and I took a short nap after breakfast.

After the nap we put the car seat in the Taurus and Nancy and I took AJ to the zoo. It was a beautiful day for a walk through the zoo. AJ was very attentive and seemed to enjoy the displays that were open. Nancy fixed beans and rice for dinner. It was great. Missy got AJ dressed in her bumble bee costume. Ms P even had a costume. Missy had make a hot dog jacket for Ms P. The hot dog was complete with catsup and mustard. Ms P was the hit of the neighborhood. We walked around our block and I was surprised at how many home owners were sitting outside all dressed up and passing out candy. AJ seemed to enjoy it. We were out about 30 minutes. After we got home the cars and vans started moving in from outside our neighborhood. We had about 150 folks stop by the house. We turned off the lights at 1950. Most of the outsiders were teenagers without costumes.

I headed to bed early because I promised to take Missy and AJ out for breakfast tomorrow after the MAC. It was a beautiful fall day. I think AJ enjoyed the zoo and trick or treating. Missy brought her home last October and Nancy and I were amazed with her progress in the past 12 months.

Saturday October 30, 2010

Just like the past two days I got up at 0500, took my pill, and then went back to bed until 0650. At 0730, Nancy headed to the MAC and I got on the AC and pedaled to Bill's. I had the pancake and eggs. I read both the DFP and WSJ. The DFP had several articles on how nasty the race for MI Supreme Court justice is. Apparently in a census year the Supreme Court plays a major role in redistricting. MI will lose a US legislative seat so how the boundaries are drawn has major political implications.

After breakfast I stopped at Rylee's Hardware which is across the street from Bill's. I purchased some wall anchors so I can hang a coat rack on my office's west wall. I also bought some 10 year smoke alarm batteries. I contacted Missy about 1000 and she said that she was in MI on US23. I realized that I had time so I pedaled back to Rylee's to buy a new smoke alarm. When I got home I hung the new alarm and then checked the one I thought was bad. I was wrong so we now have three smoke alarms on the second floor.

Missy got to GR about 1400. She and AJ had a good day for a car ride. We spent some time getting reacquainted. Missy, AJ, Ms P and yours truly took a walk around the block. At 1730 we all got in Missy's SUV and headed to Russ' for dinner. The four of us lowered the average age in the restaurant by 15 years.

Tomorrow is a busy day so we all headed to bed early. Ms P elected to sleep with Missy and AJ.

Saturday, October 30, 2010

Friday October 29, 2010

I got up at 0500 and went downstairs and took my eye pill and filled Ms P's food bowls. I went back to bed and slept until 0700. It is suppose to be a nice day today so I took my sunglasses when I headed to the MAC. Of course I did not need them on my ride to the MAC because it was dark. It was Friday but I completed my routine without much effort. I shaved again today because Nancy and I are going to the symphony tonight. I can't look unkempt.

I did need my sunglasses when I left the MAC. It was going to be another beautiful fall day. Today's DFP had several articles on the trials of several friends of the ex Mayor of Detroit. I think all the crooks are finally getting put away. Detroit still has a long way to go to restore its creditability.

I did not get home until 1330. The news channels were all reporting on the alleged bombs on the cargo planes heading to Chicago. I spent some time cleaning up my bathroom so Missy and AJ can use it when they come today. We expect them about 2300. Since we are staying up late tonight Nancy and I both took a nap this afternoon. After my nap I got a call from Missy saying they will come on Saturday instead of today.

At 1730 Nancy and I headed downtown for dinner and the symphony. We had dinner at the Amway' river side restaurant. It was a good meal at a reasonable price. We attended the lecture before the concert. It explained tonight's concert. We were using the Moleski's tickets and they have great seats in the loge. It was a very enjoyable evening. We both headed to bed when we got home at 2230.

Thursday October 28, 2010

My weird sleep patterns continue. I woke about 0200 and could not go back to sleep so I played several games on the itouch. At 0500 I woke and decided to take Ms P out. I also filled her food dish and drank my fiber drink and took an eye pill. I went back to bed at 0515 and slept to 0650.

It was misting when I headed to the MAC about 0730. It was also pitch black. Sunrise is at 0810. I can't wait for DST to end. I don't like pedaling in the dark. I increased my rowing time to 16 minutes without any noticeable pain in my shoulder. I hope by the end of next week to be back to rowing about 22 minutes. This was my time just before the face plant. I shaved this morning because I was beginning to look grubby. I normally shave about every three days. When I was in the Navy I shaved every day. I also shined my shoes every day. I think it has been about 3 months since I have shined any shoes.

It was still misting when I left the MAC. At the Kava House I read both the DFP and WSJ. I like the WSJ because there slant on the news agrees with my slant. Last night was the first game of the World Series and the SFG won. I did not watch the game. I seem to have lost all interest in professional sports. The Detroit Pistons lost their first game last night. Who cares?

I will be glad when the election is over. I did mail my ballot today. We had two state wide referendums on the ballot. I voted against both. I do not like referendums. We are a representative democracy and I think it is the job of elected official to decide all issues that are on most referendums. CA voters have approved several recent referendums that I think are stupid. I also don't like term limits. With term limits you have an inexperienced legislature resulting in bureaucrats running the show.

This afternoon I am checking our finances to see how we are doing. I think on paper we have improved since January. I finished checking and yes we have improved slightly since Dec 09.

For dinner tonight Nancy and I headed to Great Lakes Shipping. I had the French dip and a Founder's beer. Not much on TV so we headed to bed after reading the GRP.

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Wednesday October 27, 2010

It is Wednesday my easy day. Last night I set the alarm on my new boom box. I was having some problems figuring out the system but the alarm did go off at the time I set it at, 0646. I have been having weird sleep patterns lately. I got up at 0500 and fed Ms P and took my pill for my eye and then went back to bed. I slept sound for the next 85 minutes and felt rested when I got up with the alarm. Maybe this is what old men do? Nancy took Ms P out at 0600 and said it was windy but clear. I decided to pedal to Bill's for breakfast. It was pitch black so I had all the light blazing. The wind was very strong but I was going downhill when I was pedaling into the wind.

I had Bill's breakfast special and took some time to read the DFP and WSJ. I got home about 0900 and immediately got in the C2 and drove to Great Lakes Chemical . They are putting a special sealant on the car so I won't have to wax it for a year. I got a package of 4 applications when I bought the car. Nancy picked me up about 1015. When we got home Kim had arrived and was busy cleaning the house.

At 1115 I got on the AT and pedaled to the MAC. Today I swam 45 minutes. I think swimming is great for the shoulder. It is the dry skin season so after my swim I applied my new super duper lotion. I got on the AT and started pedaling to Great Lakes Chemical, a distance of 6 miles. I spent most of the time pedaling into the wind so that when I got to GLC I was drenched in sweat. The car looks good. Immediately after I got home I went on a 1.5 mile walk. Since I had worked up such a sweat I had to take another shower. Of course I washed off all the lotion. After my shower I took a short nap.

Nancy worked at Meijer's Garden this afternoon. When she got home at 1700 she said that there were fire trucks in the next block. I got Ms P and walked around the block to see what the trucks were doing. The trucks were gone.

Tonight was cereal night. I also had some pineapple and grapes. We got our absentee ballots today so after dinner I voted. In MI we have to vote for University trustees. Who has a clue as to how to vote? I think the trustees should be appointed. I read the GRP and then headed to bed at 2100.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Tuesday October 26, 2010

I got up at 0630. A tornado watch was in effect throughout the area. Several schools were closed including EGR. The weatherman said that we would be having intermittent rain and high winds all day today. I drove the C2 to the MAC. It did not seem so bad, weather wise, and I was thinking I should have taken the bike. However, it was really pouring when I was ready to leave the MAC. In fact I had to wait about 20 minutes for the rain to subside. When I drive to the Kava House I can only stay 60 minutes. The parking meters only have a 60 minute limit. The City has been giving out a lot of tickets in Eastown. This must be a way to raise money.

I got home about 1145 and had a quick lunch. Nancy had just gotten home from an appointment with Dr Kutsche. Nancy was given a clean bill of health. I spent all afternoon cleaning my office. I dusted and rearranged all my storage spaces. I also threw away many useless things like old cell phones and TVs. At 1730 I took Ms P on a walk around the block. Nancy fixed spaghetti for dinner. It was great.

We watched the news and since I needed to get my 30 in I took a walk. It was very windy and dark. We watched NCIS and then at 2100 headed to bed.

Monday October 25, 2010

We had several major thunder storms pass through last night. Ms P went bonkers. She kept everyone awake all night. I got up at 0500 did some chores and then went back to bed until 0810. Nancy did not go to the MAC today. The weather today was unseasonably warm. I over dressed and by the time I got to the MAC I was drenched in sweat.

I increased my rowing time to 14 minutes and did not experience any pain. I also jogged 18 minutes for a total cardio time of 32 minutes. My goal is to row 24 minutes and jog 18 for a total time of 42 minutes. I did not get to the Kava House until 1130. I read both the DFP and WSJ.

I had a quick lunch and then ran several errands. I asked Ms P if she wanted to come but she would not leave Nancy's side. After the errands I took the three leaf bags that Nancy had filled while working in her garden this afternoon down to the curb. I then got on the AT and pedaled twice around Reeds Lake. It took about 70 minutes. Tonight was cereal night. I watched the news and then read an article in Vanity Fair about the fall of Merrill Lynch. As I have said before, I am amazed at how dumb smart people are. We are expecting two days of rain and very high winds. I don't know if I will be able to ride my bike tomorrow. Maybe I will stay inside and clean my office. However, I will get my 30 in.

Sunday October 24, 2010

Sunday morning and I get up the first time at 0500. I take Ms P out and then empty the dryer of my clothes and bring my basket upstairs. I immediately go back to bed and wake up at 0646 when the alarm goes off. Nancy is still wiped out from her fall so she is not going swimming today. I get in the C2 and head to the MAC. I swam for 45 minutes with little pain. I have been doing the breast stroke but today I tried the backstroke. I was surprised that I had little pain with the backstroke. I had not shaved since Tuesday so after my shower I shaved. I got home about 0945. We then went to Meijer's to get our weekly supplies. Ms P went along. The gas gauge said we had 57 miles until empty. I put 16.5 gallons in the Taurus. Gas was $2.75.

When we got home Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I read a few sections of the paper and then took my regular Sunday afternoon nap. After the nap Nancy and I along with Ms P drove to Kohl's. Yes that Kohl's. Nancy returned several items and we purchased a comforter for the twin bed in Debbie's room. Next we stopped at Woodland Mall so Nancy could purchase some cosmetics that were on sale.

Ms P was a model passenger during our trip. When we got home I took a 3 mile walk. The leaves are going fast but this has been one of the best years for fall colors. I continue to see some Robins. Are they confused or is it global warming?

Nancy fixed a special dinner for me tonight. I had cream chipped beef on toast. It was outstanding. I also had a baked apple for dessert. All in all a great meal.

We watched 60 minutes and read the GRP. At 0845 we all headed to bed.

Saturday October 23, 2010

I got up a little before 0700 to take Ms P out to do her bidness. It was raining so she did not want to get wet. I asked Nancy if she wanted coffee and a scone. She said yes so I drove to the Kava House and got breakfast. Nancy's head still hurt this morning. She and Ms P stayed in bed and watched some TV, ate breakfast and dozed. We purchased a electric sheet at Kohl's for a twin bed in Debbie's room. I put the sheet on and also took a short nap. I also got the boom box for my itouch to work and I listened to my tunes.

Nancy did a load of laundry earlier and I am doing one now. Today is an easy day for Bob and Nancy. Nancy right now, 1320, is reading a book and watching the MSU game. I spent most of the afternoon getting my fall clothes out and rearranging my closets. Nancy took a nap and I did several loads of laundry.

Nancy and I filled out our absentee ballot applications and so I decided to walk over to the post office and mail them. I continued my walk so that I had walked 4.5 miles by the time I got home.

Nancy had a light dinner. I got in the C2 and drove to D&W Gaslight and purchased a deli sandwich and Neptune salad. I also had a Guinness beer with my dinner. We watched a little TV and by 2100 we were all upstairs.

Friday October 22, 2010

The temperature was 33 when I got up at 0710. I layered up and headed to the MAC. I did 30 minutes of aerobics, my abs and balancing exercises but have not yet been able to do pushups or pull-ups. My goal is to be able to get back 100% on the pushups and pull-ups by Christmas. I got to the Kava House at 1055. I have to hurry today because I have to take Ms P to the beauty shop by 1230. I got Ms P on time and she did not seem nervous. I came home and took a 1.5 mile walk.

Nancy is having lunch with Linda Moleski today. She got home about 1330 in time for us to pick up Ms P. As soon as we got Ms P we headed to Costco to buy some supplies. We purchased peanut butter, dishwasher soap, vitamins, pizza and cereal. I also bought some Guinness beer.

I took a short nap and then we headed to Russ' for dinner. I had the meatloaf dinner and Nancy had the chicken dinner. With the coupon we our bill was $7.00. We were planning on stopping at Kohl's and then Woodland Mall.

At Kohl's we had picked out our purchases and were ready to check out when Nancy called my name and then she fainted. She hit her head on the concrete floor real bad. She was out about 20 seconds. I could feel the huge bump on her head. She said she was ok and she walked to the car while I checked out. When we got home I gave her some aspirins and took her blood pressure. We talked about going to Emergency and I called her sister, Peg, to get her opinion. She said go to Emergency. We drove to Blodgett's Emergency because it is so close. They booked her in quickly and then they started a series of tests. Ekg, blood, etc. All tests were okay. They think that Nancy was dehydrated and this caused the fainting. We left Blodgett a little after midnight.

The folks at Blodgett said because of the head injury I should check on Nancy every 90 minutes. I set the alarm on my phone and checked as directed. We also changed the ice pad at this time. The night went fine and we will prevail. God Bless!
