Blog time 1125 at Panera

Slept with the windows open last night.  The temperatures were in low 70s but humidity was 90%.  The humidity made sleeping unpleasant.

Slept in until 0645.  Nancy had been up for some time.  She had already taken Ms P out and fed her.

Nancy headed to her Tuesday swim at MVP. This evening Nancy and I are working the concert at Meijer’s Garden.  We have to be there at 1630.

After breakfast I headed out on my 7 mile ride to Y.  Today I did not see any critters.

Exercised at the Y before headed to Panera.

End of July memories:

In HS I worked June and several weeks into July on my Grandfather’s farm.  In mid July I started working for Dad.  I worked on a survey crew.  I really enjoyed working outside.  We would have many road projects in the surrounding counties.  On some jobs we would stay overnight.  I liked eating out and listening to all the dirty stories the older guys told.  I soaked it all up.

I always talk about my stay on Midway Island when in the Navy.  I tell everyone I spent 1 year, two weeks, three days, and 13 hours on the Island.  That is not really true because on the last Monday in July 1962 I boarded the log flight to Hawaii.  The US military had a vacation retreat at Fort DeRussy on Waikiki Beach.  For $5 a night I got a small room with a cot.  The bathroom was down the hall.  I thought I was in heaven.  Rented a car and drove around the island.  Spent time on Waikiki Beach.  A Navy pilot who was on a 90 day rotation on Midway even fixed me up with a Navy nurse.  We had dinner at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.  I insisted on going to the Royal Hawaiian because I remember as a boy listening to a Saturday night radio show call Hawaii Calls.  It was broadcast from the Royal Hawaiian.  On a cold February night I would be under a ton of covers and dreamed of being at the RH.  Headed back to Midway on Friday.  Five days in Paradise. This break saved my sanity.

Shower, lunch and a nap before fixing apple snack.  At 1600 Nancy and I headed to Meijer Gardens.  Nancy is selling tickets and I am taking tickets.

Tuesday night concert are free to members.  Today a very popular local band is playing.  The band called the 6 Pack is made up of six women who graduated from GR’s West Catholic in the late 60s.  They play music of the 60s.

Last night set a Tuesday night attendance record.  Over 2,000 folks attended.  The concert runs from 7 to 9.  6 Pack came on at 2000 and played for a solid hour.  No stopping or talking, just high energy music.  The crowd went wild.

Absolutely perfect Summer’s night for a concert.  I even saw several folks that I knew.  Everyone left in a great mood.

At home I watched some of the Democrat debate and read the GRP.  No AC tonight.  Tomorrow will be another nice sunny day.

Blog time 1110 at Panera

Nancy took Ms P out at 0600.  I slept in until 0645.  Checked my weather app and no rain until this afternoon.

Nancy headed to MVP for her “healthy lifestyle” class.  After breakfast I biked to the Y.  Today I took a new route which has fewer hills but is exactly the same distance as my normal route, 7 miles.

This morning traffic on local roads seemed lighter than normal.  Same can be said of attendance at Y.  Folks must be on vacation.

Calisthenics and 0.6 mile walk before heading to Panera.  Panera still has not solved their AC problem.  I now carry an extra shirt in my backpack.

This and that:

The baby robins are getting bigger.  How long before they leave the nest?

The shooting at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, Ca is today’s big news story.   Does anyone have an answer on how to stop these shooting?

Nancy and I, when driving from San Jose to LA, always drive by Gilroy, the Garlic Capital.  The smell of garlic is overpowering.

Representative Cummings and President Trump continue bad mouthing each other.  What happened to civility among our elected leaders?  Good grief it is embarrassing.

Puerto Rico’s Justice Secretary, who is next in line to be Governor, doesn’t want the job.  What now?

Nice to see the pols in DC are going to take August off.  It might be better for the USA.

Started to sprinkle at 1130 so I left Panera early.  After lunch I headed downstairs.

This afternoon;

I finished putting together the invocation I will give at Wednesday’ Breakfast Club.

Paid several bills and finished checking end of month finances.

Fixed our apple snack.

Walked to mail box to post several letters.  Halfway into the walk it started to rain hard.  Changed clothes as soon as got home.

This evening we had our standard Monday light dinner.  Watched the news on ABC.  Direct TV and NBC are still fighting so no NBC.

After dinner fixed Nancy’s cheese/pill snack.  Tonight we watched an episode of London Kills on Acorn.  Nancy headed to bed and I watched an new show, Undercover, on Netflix filmed in Holland with subtitles.

The temperature was in mid 70s at bedtime.  Turned off the AC.  Rest of week should be nice with no rain.

Week end Update for WE Sunday Jul 28

Blog time 1630 Sunday sitting in living room.

Saturday July 27

Up at 0630.  Another warm sunny day ahead for us.

Nancy and I walked to Panera.  It was freezing inside so we sat outside.  Very pleasant.  I had my standard oatmeal breakfast and Nancy drank a coffee.

At home Nancy started the laundry.  I took a 14 mile bike ride.  Took an easy route, the trail was full of walkers and bikers.

After a shave and shower I had lunch.  Spent several hours downstairs reading and finishing blog.

I did take a nap this afternoon.  No apple snack today.

At 1530 we left home and picked up Sonya Everson-Ford our former next door neighbor.  We are having dinner tonight at the newly relocated Euro-Bistro.  It is located in the former Panera about 0.3 mile from the condo.

I had their perch dinner and Nancy had the French onion soup with a salad.  The place is a little pricey.  That said, we gave the food an A.  The place was crowded.
Debbie FaceTimed us this evening.  We highlighted last week’s activities.

Grandson Lucas is in a baseball tournament in San Diego and Veronica has been keeping us informed.  The team made it to the finals but ran into a super hot team.

Missy has been sending us photos of AJ enjoying swimming at the Yacht Club.  Looks like every one is enjoying their summer.

We watched an episode of Keeping Faith before heading to bed.  We slept with the AC on.

Sunday July 28

I got up at 0550 and took Ms P out.  It looked like another nice day.  Went back to bed anticipating that I would get up at 0630 so Nancy and I could take our Sunday walk.  Surprise! I got up at 0745.  I asked Nancy why she did not get me up.  Her reply was “you were sleeping so sound I did not want to wake you”.  Ok

Bought a quick cup of coffee at Panera before heading to Trinity Lutheran.  As expected church was not crowded.

Stopped at Meijer’s for supplies.  Gas today was $2.89.

After unloading the car I drove to the new REI store.  Bought a pair of ZOIC biking shorts.
At the same time Nancy drove to Talbots’s at Tanger’s and bought a dress for her upcoming 60th HS reunion.  Nancy seldom wears a dress so I was glad when she purchased one.  She looks good in a dress.  In fact I think all women look best in a dress.

Took a nap this afternoon.  We also had our apple snack.

At 1700 we headed out to Bud and Stanley’s Restaurant in Plainfield Twp.  We met the Moleski’s.  Tonight we all had their liver and onions special.  We sat outside.  It was very pleasant.

At home we watched the final episode of Keeping Faith.  Disappointing ending!  I am now looking for a cop show that I can watch after Nancy has gone to bed.  Any suggestions.

Very humid tonight so I left the AC on.  Rain expected tomorrow.

Blog time 1200 at Panera

Nancy took Ms P out at 0530.  Back to bed and then we both got up at 0700.  The arthritis in my hips bothered me last night.  Might have to take more Motrin?  Or maybe lessen my bike miles and start swimming.

Kim comes to clean this morning.  Nancy and I are going to Tanger’s Discount Mall this afternoon.

The Y was not crowded this morning.  The pool and classes were empty.  However, the summer camps for kids were going full blast.  Calisthenics and walk before heading to Panera.

Finished blog and read some news, such as it is.  Headed home at noon.  Kim was still cleaning so after a quick shower, Nancy and I headed to the Tanger’s Outlet Mall.  Spent an hour looking around.  Nancy bought one item at Talbots and I bought a high visibility rain proof bike jacket at Mountain Warehouse.  Also bought open toed sandals at Cole Haan.  We like this Mall.

Nap and then fixed our apple snack.  For dinner Nancy fixed me a Chicken Balti Pie with potato.  After dinner fixed Nancy her cheese/cracker pill snack.

I took a short walk before settling down.  Tonight we watched the last episode of Scott & Bailey.  Good ending.  I stayed up and watched the last episode of the Belgium Cop show.  Very Bad ending.

Blog time 1230 at Panera

Nancy took Ms P out at 0500.  Back to bed and we both got up at 0630.

Nancy headed to her swim class.  I have to take Ms P to her 0900 appointment at the Groomer so I did all the calisthenics at home.

Breakfast and then grabbed Ms P and headed out.  The place was jammed.  I am going to encourage the Grandkids to become Vets or anything associated with pets.

Drove home and then got on bike and took a 10 mile ride.  After the ride showered/shaved and picked up Ms P.  She looks good.  They gave her a short cut.  Perfect for the hot weather predicted for the next two weeks.

Nancy is having lunch with her friend Karen Horlings.  Lunch is at Timbers about 45 minutes from the condo.

Drove to Panera.  Finished blog and made quick read of news.

This and that;

In Puerto Rico the Governor has resigned.  Is Puerto Rico as corrupt as the demonstrators claim?

The Fed are reintroducing the death penalty?  The executions probably will take place at the Federal prison in Terre Haute, In.

Speaking of Terre Haute, Nancy and I will be going to her 60th High School class reunion in a couple of weeks.

Critter report, we had a doe and her two fawns stopping traffic on Tahoe Drive in front of the condo.  Fortunately all traffic stopped.

After a quick shower and lunch I headed to Woodland Mall.  Stopped at Apple Store to look at new lap tops.  They look good.  Maybe in a couple of months?  Also looked at several of the neat accessories, like bike helmet and lenses for iPhone cameras.

I also stopped at the new REI sporting goods store near the mall.  They had some neat items including bike clothing from ZOIC.  My favorite knickers are from ZOIC.  I thought they were only mail order.  REI will be on my shopping list.

This afternoon; Took a nap, Fixed apple snack.

For dinner we headed to Brann’s.  Nancy had a margarita and I had a beer before ordering soup and a sandwich.  Brann’s was not crowded.

At home fixed evening snack before a walk.  Nancy and I watched an episode of Keeping Faith and I watched the Belgium cop show before turning in.

Turned on AC this afternoon.  Turned it off at 0200 and opened the bedroom slider.  If forgot the alarm was set so I had to hustle to turn alarm off.  Needless to say Nancy did not like the high pitched alarm interrupting her sleep.

Blog time 1000 at Panera

Nancy took Ms P out at 0500.  We both finally got up at 0645.  It was sunny and cool.  Temperature was 57 at 0800.

Nancy headed out at 0800 to her class at MVP.  This afternoon she works at the Gardens.

Today is my easy day.  I biked to Panera for an oatmeal breakfast.  Read the papers and finished yesterday’s blog.

After Panera I took a 7 mile ride. At home showered and then drove to Costco to make an exchange.  It was easy.

After lunch I did a load of laundry and gathered up all our recyclables and trash before taking nap.

Ms P is in need of a hair cut and wash.  Called the Vet but got no response.  I drove to the Vet and made an appointment for 0900 tomorrow.

This and that;

Watched some of the Mueller hearing.  Boring!  All the legislators were grandstanding.  Mueller looked confused by the confusing questions.  The big loser today was congress.
The anti-meat crowd is trying to get consumers to buy products like Beyond Beef.  I am a carnivore and proud of it.  I don’t like the food police telling me what to eat.

All the Democrats running for Congress want to put more regulations on Facebook, Google and other tech companies.  Just as soon as the regulations go into effect another innovation will emerge that will replace  Facebook and make the regs useless..

Read a bio on the new leader of the EU.  She is the former Defense Minister of Germany and a medical doctor with seven kids.  Wow busy woman.  I’m impressed.

The UK has a new PM who folks say is the UK’s answer to President Trump.  I sure hope not.

Light dinner followed by cheese/pill and cookie snacks.  I took a short walk.  Tonight we watched Father Brown.  Nancy headed to bed and I watched another episode of the Belgium cop show.

Tuesday July 23, 2019

Tuesday July 23, 2019

Nancy took Ms P out at 0500.  We sure wish Ms P would sleep later.

Nice and cool this morning, 57.  Nancy headed out for her Tuesday swim.  After the swim she is meeting with her blood doctor.  This is a final check to make sure her infection has healed.

After breakfast I biked to the Y.  Took the seven mile route.  I like this route because it is relatively flat.

I did see one very big turkey in the middle of the bike path.  By the time I got out my camera he had walked away.  Bummer!

Noted several utility crews working restoring cable and electric lines.  I can not get over the size of trees that were blown over by the recent storm.  Some had trunk diameters over 24”.

This and that:

Finally the UK has a new PM Boris Johnson.

The protests continue in Puerto Rico.  Is the government as incompetent as the protesters claim?

Hong Kong protests also continue.  I agree with the protesters.  Mainland China’s dictator wants to take control of everything.  Freedom is a lost privilege in China.

POTUS and Legislators have reached a debt ceiling agreement, but at what price?  We are spending our way into the poor house.  This was my Grandmother Hughes’ favorite saying.  She was very conservative.  Slightly to the right of Attila the Hun.

At home showered and then lunch.  Nancy said the blood Doctor gave her a clean bill of health.

This afternoon:

Got car washed at Breton Village.

Bought a chambray shirt at Orvis.  Same as chambray shirts we were issued at Navy OCS in 1961.

At Costco bought two 1.5 liter bottles of red wine.  Cheaper than Two Buck Chuck.

Took a nap.

Fixed apple snack.

For dinner we had the last of the pot roast.  It was as good as first time.

Fixed cookie, cheese/pill snack.  Walked to mail box.

After Jeopardy we watched switched to Apple TV.  Watched Wycliffe.  Nancy headed to bed and I stayed up and watched the Belgium Cop show.  Weird but good.

Monday July 22, 2019

Great night for sleeping.  Temp was 68 when first went out.  Nancy slept in this morning.

Today I have to stay home because the Security Company is coming to put in a new CO monitor.  Nancy headed out at 0800 for her class at MVP.

The service man is scheduled sometime between 0900 and noon.  I had time for a quick cup of coffee so got on my bike and headed to Panera.  Filled up my travel mug and headed home.

The service man arrived at 0930.  It took about an hour to change monitors.  The new monitor is guaranteed for ten years.  I probably won’t be around for the new monitor.  I will be 91.

This morning I took a 14 mile ride.  It was nice and cool.  Perfect weather for a ride.

Showered and shaved before lunch.  After lunch I dropped off my shirts at the laundry and filled up the Taurus.  At home switched cars and headed to Bill and Paul’s a local outdoor sporting goods store.  Almost bought a kayak but chickened out.

Fixed our apple snack before taking a nap.

We have a Robin’s nest is our security light.  For several weeks have watched the nest without seeing any chicks.  Yesterday we finally saw two chicks in the nest.  It is a little late in the nesting season and I sure hope the chicks can survive.

We had a light dinner followed by a walk.  Fixed our cookies and cheese/pill snack.  Watched the news before switching to Acorn.  Watched another episode of Keeping Faith.  Nancy headed to bed and I watched the Belgium Cop show on Netflix.

The temperature had dropped to the 60s at bedtime.  No AC tonight, which is great.

Weekend Update for WE 21Jul19

Blog started at 1430 on 20Jul sitting in living room.

Saturday July 20;  we had a big electrical storm blow through last night.  Nancy who slept downstairs did not hear the storm or the mice in the walls.

I took Ms P out at 0500.  The temperature had dropped to 74.  Nancy slept in until 0730.  She said it was her best sleep in ages.

This morning we walked to Panera.  We noted some of the storm damage.  A tree had blown across the path and many branches littered the path and road.

I had my usual oatmeal with banana, bagel with PB and coffee this morning.  Nancy had just a coffee.

The sun was beginning to warm things up when we left Panera.  Temp will reach 90 early today until a late afternoon rain will cool things off.

As soon as we got home Nancy headed to Sam’s Club to get some soft cheese.  No luck Sam’s Club was closed, no electricity, because of last night’s storm.

Nancy started the laundry and I changed into my bike riding clothes and headed out.  Want to finish the ride before the heat gets too bad.  Today I took an easy 10 miles ride.  Along the bike route I noted the damage from last night’s storm.  Three traffic signals were out.  Four large trees fell across the path and noted several electrical wires down.

This and that:

Both our CO alarm and WiFi modem need replacement.  The Security firm is coming Monday and the modem will be replaced soon by our Computer Guru.

The Iranian Navy seized a UK tanker in the Persian Gulf.  The Iranian move was in retaliation for the UK seizing a Iran ship near Gibraltar.

Took a short nap but forgot to prepare apple snack.  That has been happening a lot lately.

For dinner we headed to JT’s Pizza.  We split a medium pineapple ham pizza.  I also had a beer.  It hit the spot.

My stomach must have shrunk because 10 years ago I would never share a medium pizza.  Today Nancy and I shared and we took two pieces home.

I did read Peggy Noonan’s Op-ed in the WSJ.  She hit the spot.  I usually agree with everything she writes.

Watched some shows on Apple TV before turning in.  The heat wave is over but I still kept the AC on.
Sunday June 21

Nancy slept downstairs last night.  No critter noice so we assume the noice our house sitter heard was outside, not inside.

We started on our Sunday walk when it started to rain.  Walk cancelled.

At 0840 we headed to Trinity Lutheran.  First time for Nancy in over a month.  As you might expect not a big crowd at Church.  July is a big family vacation month.

One item of interest was that during the standard weekly prayer another Lutheran Church in our area is mentioned.

This week it was Settlement Lutheran in Gowan, Mi.  Gowan in Montcalm County is about 45 miles from GR.  My second cousin Mary Hughes started as the Vicar of Settlement Lutheran today.  We were proud.

Made a short stop at Meijer’s.  Gas today was $2.75.

Home and then we headed to Trader Joe’s for baguette, wine, dog food and frozen dinners.  Also stopped at Sam’s Club for soft cheese.  The power at Sam’s Club had just come on and the extended outage had ruined the cheese.  We left empty handed.

Debbie FaceTimed this afternoon.  First time we had talked in ages.  We got caught up.  Always like FaceTime with kids.

Took a short walk before lunch.  Lunch, nap and apple snack this afternoon.

For dinner Nancy fixed her world famous scrambled eggs with bacon.  Also had a piece of last night’s pizza.

Tonight we watched an episode of Midsomer Murder followed by Keeping Faith on Acorn.  Turned off AC before bed.  Heat wave is over!

Blog time 1130 at Panera

I started the night sleeping in the downstairs bedroom.  Wanted to know if I could hear the critters in the wall.  No luck so at 0300 I returned upstairs to my comfy bed.

Nancy and Ms P were up before 0600.  Nancy said it was hot and humid.  I checked and the temp was 80.  Warmest morning temperature this year.

Got up at 0700.  Nancy headed out to her class at MVP.  I left home at 0800 and biked 7 miles to the Y.

Calisthenics and walk at Y before heading to Panera.  Panera as usual was cold but I brought an extra long sleeve shirt.

Finished yesterday’s blog and started reading the news.  We seem to be in a summer news doldrum because I found nothing I want to comment on.

Shower and then lunch.  After lunch Nancy and I headed to Costco for supplies.  Bought eye drops, sandwich thins and Cheerios.  We also shared a frozen yogurt.  Costco was crowded but they had a lot of lanes open so not much of a wait to check out.

It was 90 degrees this afternoon.  The local news outlets spend their entire broadcast on dealing with the heat.  It is almost too much info.  Luckily the heat wave will end late tomorrow.

As I mentioned in an earlier blog we cannot get NBC on our Direct TV.  So now our only local station is ABC.  Direct TV did send us a cheap indoor antenna. I checked the instruction and don’t think it will work.

For dinner Nancy cooked a pot roast in the crock pot.  It was very good.  The meat was especially nice and tender.

We watched the news and Jeopardy before switching to Apple TV.  Watched an episode of Midsomer Murders.

Tonight Nancy will sleep downstairs to see if she can hear the critters in the wall.  The mouse trap has not been sprung.

Blog time 1115 at Panera

Another hot humid day ahead.  Nancy took Ms P out at 0600.  I did not get up until 0630.

Nancy left early this morning for her swim at MVP.  After breakfast I biked to the Y via my 7 mile route.  No critters noted this morning on the ride.

This is son, Stephen’s Birthday,  HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE.  Like all our kid’s I remember vividly Steve’s birth.  It started about 0600 on a hot humid July day, not unlike today.  Nancy’s water broke and she calmly waited for me to come home from a run.  Showered and headed to Blodgett Hospital.  Steve was born in the early afternoon.

Debbie and Missy were going to fly with their Grandmother to Boston on the 19th to visited their Aunt Judy, Nancy’s sister.  Of course the trip was cancelled because of Steve’s birth.  To this day Debbie reminds Steve that their trip to Boston was postponed because of his birth.  In jest of course!

I was working at the time for the Kent County Department of Public Works.  My job included running the County’s landfills.  I purchased a box of cigars and told the attendant to give each trash driver a cigar.  I was popular that afternoon with the local solid waste drivers.
Also passed out a box at the next Board of Public Works meeting.  Good memories!

Do Fathers still pass out cigars after the birth of a child. If not, what?

Calisthenics and walk at the Y before heading to Panera.  I am now back 100% to my summer routine.

Read some of the news, most of it is very toxic.  Discouraging to say the least.  Most folks over 60 feel the same, why can’t we get along.  The Administration has done a lot of things that I endorse but I cannot support all the personal attack and bullying our President has done.  It reflex’s poorly on the Country.  He will not get my vote.

After a shower and lunch I headed out on some errands.

Stopped at Ace Hardware and bought a mouse trap.  Our house sitter said she heard critters in the walls near her down stairs bed.

At Meijer’s I bought some sugar free oatmeal cookies and hand cream that is suppose to heal dry, cracked hands.  I sure hope so.

I did take a nap this afternoon.  No apple snack today, just forgot.

At 1700 we headed to Shepard’s Grill.  The place was jammed.  Most of the customers were seniors.

I had a fried Lake Perch sandwich and Nancy had a bowl of soup.  I gave the Perch sandwich an A.  Love this place, Nancy is lukewarm.

Tonight we watched a new show on Netflix whose name I cannot remember.  Nancy headed to bed and I watched another episode of my favorite Belgium cop show.

We phoned Steve at 2100 and wished him a Happy Birthday.  Everything is going well.

It was still hot and humid when took Ms P out at 2200.  Tonight I slept downstairs to see if I can hear the mice in the walls.  I did not hear a thing.  At 0300 I headed back upstairs to my comfy bed.  The heat and humidity continues through the weekend.

Blog time 1145 at Panera

Nancy took Ms P out before 0500.  I did not hear her.  The alarm goes off at 0515.  Today I have Breakfast Club.

It was very humid this morning.  I closed all the windows and turned on the AC.  Left home at 0615.

Headed downtown to the University Club.  We had about 25 members in attendance.  Good program this morning.  It was about a volunteer program, Sight Seers, that provides audio services to the blind.  The service was started in GR decades ago and used FM radio signals.  Sight Seers provided users with a radio.  Our speaker’s volunteer job was reading the local news.  Very interesting.

Headed straight home.  Changed into bike clothes and took a six mile route to Panera.

Nancy is working at the Gardens this afternoon.  I bet they will be busy.  It is now, noon, 81, but the humidity has dropped to 72.

Finished blog and read some news at Panera before heading home at 1230.  Turkey, the Squad, Immigration, the weather and POTUS’s stupid tweets dominated the news.  It is the middle of summer so who cares.

Showered before a quick lunch.  Back to normal Wednesday;  took out trash, did a load of laundry and took a nap.

I spent some time in the office doing some personal business.

I sent Trinity Lutheran a check so they can buy bus tickets for folks without a car.  I think public transportation is very important.  Several of the nice young folks working at Panera do not have a car so they rely of public transportation.

Sent annual contribution to the Grandkid’s college fund.

Mary Hughes, my 2nd cousin, just became Vicar of a small Lutheran church in Gowen, MI.  Congratulations Mary.  Mary received a partial scholarship for her Divinity studies from Trinity Lutheran.  I made a contribution to their scholarship fund.

We had a light dinner, followed by our evening snacks.  Watched the news and Jeopardy before switching to Apple TV.  We watched an episode of Scott & Bailey.  The show is becoming very grim.

Nancy headed to bed and I watched my favorite Belgium cop show on Netflix.
Took Ms P out at 2200.  It was still hot and humid so I left the AC on.
