Tuesday December 21, 2010

Happy Solstice and remember the days are getting longer. Ms P must know something is up because she has been very antsy. We went outside at 0415 this morning to do her bidness. It was too cloudy to see the lunar eclipse. We were suppose to get 3" of snow overnight but it had not started at 0415. I went back to bed and did not get up until 0730. I walked to the MAC this morning. On my walk I decided that I would do my normal exercises at 50% this morning.

As I was strapping into the rowing machine I noticed a very tall young lady on the next machine. She and I started at the same time. I could tell that she had rowed before. Her stroke was very smooth and powerful. I glanced over and saw that on her monitor that the was rowing 02'02" per 500 meters I was rowing 02'26". In the standard 2,000 meter race she would finish in 08'08". I would finish in 09'44". I found out she was on the UM crew team and was a freshman. She is also in the engineering school. Another Go Blu moment at the MAC.

I completed my exercises and walked over to the Starbucks at D&W and read the DFP and WSJ. I got home about 1300 and had a quick lunch. Nancy had packed Ms P's suitcase and Ms P knew that something was up.

After lunch I headed upstairs to finish packing and continue reading some magazines. Kim came about 1430 and picked up Ms P. She was excited to go. I was disappointed. Nancy said her car was dirty so I took it to the Breton Village car wash. It does look great now. Tonight we are going out to eat. The place at this time 1627 has not been determined. The winner is Great Lakes Shipping. After dinner we watched TV until 2000 and then headed to bed.

Monday December 20, 2010

It is almost getting boring but I followed my normal week day routine, except for Wednesday. it was 27⁰ when I left on my walk to the MAC. I wore a lighter coat but still worked up a sweat. I will have to take a clean undershirt in my back pack so I don't get into a wet undershirt after my shower. On my walk I passed by a young man talking on a cell phone in his driveway. I thought the voice was familiar and it was. The voice belonged to young Tom Pritz. Tom lived across the street from us during his high school days. Tom now lives in Abilene, TX and was just home visiting his father. We talked for a while and he seems in good health and spirit. He now has two kids in college. I remember Steve going over to the Pritz house after they had a big party in their huge side yard and picking up empty beer cans. Time does fly.

When I got home I walked Ms P around the block and then settled in for an afternoon of catching up on my magazine reading. I think I accomplished a lot. It is now 2034 and I just completed packing for our trip.

Tomorrow is the winter solstice and tonight is a lunar eclipse. We are also suppose to get 3 inches of snow over night. Reeds Lake is now completely iced over. I saw several fish shanties on the lake and a number of folks ice skating. Winter has settled in until St Patrick's Day. St Patrick's Day is my official end of winter.

Sunday December 19, 2010

Nancy and I headed to the MAC at 0740 this morning and it was very dark. We both swam 45 minutes. I swam 5 laps using the crawl. This is the first time in 6 months I have been able to use this stroke. After the MAC we headed to Meijer's for our weekly supplies. Actually we only need supplies for several days. I purchased gas today and it was $3.00 per gallon. We also returned $4 worth of bottles.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs this morning. The eggs were large, not jumbo, so I had three. After reading the funnies and Parade magazine I headed upstairs for my nap. After the nap I shoveled the drive and walk. The sidewalks are all iced over, except ours, so before taking my walk I put on my Yakima bear claws to help me walk on the ice. They work and I walked 3.3 miles. Today the hours of sunlight bottom out. We have 9h01' of daylight. It is the same until Christmas when the days start getting longer, 9h02'.

We had a great Trader Joe's soup tonight. I also had a couple of hot dogs. We watched 60 minutes and read the GRP. Nancy went to bed early 2010 but I stayed up and watched the first quarter of the football game.

Saturday December 18, 2010

Ms P and I are up at 0500. We do our chores go back to bed and get up with the alarm at 0630. This is the time Nancy has set so she can get to her early morning class at the MAC. I bundle up and head for Bill's for breakfast. I have pancake and eggs. I spend some time reading the DFP and WSJ. The DFP is still writing about the indictment of the ex-mayor, his father and cronies. It actually is good reporting.

On my walk home from Bill's it starts to snow and by the time I get home we have a thin dusting covering all hard surfaces. I take Ms P on a walk around the block. It is cold so she does not dilly-dally.

This is the type of day I have been dreaming about. It is dark, cold and snowing so I stay inside and catch up on my reading. Missy skyped us early today. I then got a phone call from Steve. We talked for about 35 minutes. Nancy was taking a nap when Steve called. She had some nerve pain in her foot last night so she did not sleep well. She was catching up by taking a nap. Ms P and I tried not to disturb her.

Later I called Debbie. She was working again on a Saturday. Debbie said they have had a lot of rain. I did catch up on some reading. I also read my mail and email and checked out my facebook. I do not use my facebook too much anymore. However, I did find an old high school classmate wanting to be my friend. I made him my friend and responded . The facebook format I think has changed. I clicked on a tab and I got a lot of photos of friends of friends. I only have about nine friends but must have 70 photos. It is confusing.

It was a dark gloomy day and every time I looked out the window I was glad I was inside my office. About 1500 I took a nap and after the nap I did go outside to shovel the walk. Nancy had already shoveled the top section of the drive. It only took about 20 minutes to finish the rest of the drive and walks. When I came inside Nancy was receiving a skype from the Scott Team. We had the opportunity to see Lucas and Alessandra.

For dinner tonight we went to the Brandywine. Nancy had the ham-d-scram and I had a club sandwich. We both brought some home. We watched a little TV and at 2100 headed upstairs.

Friday December 17, 2010

Ms P and I went out at 0510. It was not very cold about 27⁰. I got up for real at 0700. My walk to the MAC was uneventful. I did wish Kelley the crossing guard for IHM, Merry Christmas. Kelley is 83 years old and he is at Plymouth/Griggs every school day. After the workout I walked over to D&W's Starbucks for coffee. This morning's DFP continued articles on the ex mayors transgressions. It appears that his honor who is now in jail had a court appointed lawyer. We are providing legal help to a man who stole millions from taxpayers. His father is also being given a court appointed layer. Representative Conyers' wife was also given a court appointed attorney. Why can't the good congressman provide for his wife.

The corruption continues. The Detroit Water and Sewer System serves the greater Detroit area. The system is owned by Detroit but the majority of users live outside Detroit. Because of failure to comply with Federal Environmental regulations the System was put under Federal control many years ago. A Federal judge was suppose to manage the system. The good judge who just resigned at age 93 hired consultants to help him oversee the system. These consultants were paid handsomely. The ex-mayor and his buddies stole millions from the system. The DFP this morning asked where was the Federal oversight? Once again an example of Federal government incompetence. The suburbs are up in arms. The only solution is to create a regional authority.

On a happier note on this day, Friday, in 1962 I took the log flight from Midway Island to Pearl Harbor. After 1 year, 2 weeks, three days and 13 hours I was leaving Midway and heading to Alpena for a two week leave. Once the flight was airborne I pinched myself to determine if I was dreaming. An old Navy officer who sat across from me started to laugh and said yes it is real, we are leaving the island. I arrived in Alpena on Sunday morning. It was 70⁰ when I left Midway and below zero when I arrived in Alpena. I had two good weeks at home and then in early January I headed to San Diego for about 3 weeks of training before leaving for Vietnam.

Today, I got home about 1300 and after a quick lunch I got in the C2 and headed downtown. I had to pick up my contacts. I also stopped at the watch shop on Monroe Center to get a new battery and strap for my sports watch. When I got home I took Ms P on a walk around the block. Tonight Nancy and I are going to Olga's in Gaslight Village for dinner.

We both had Olga's peasant soup for dinner. Everyone should try the peasant soup. At home we watched a little TV and at 2100 we came upstairs.

Thursday December 16, 2010

I did not get up at 0500 as I usually do. When I did get up at 0630 Nancy had already taken Ms P out. It was 9⁰ when I left for the MAC. It was also very dark. I stopped to mail my Christmas card when I decided to check each letter to see if I forgot anything. I forgot to put a stamp on 2 cards. Another good reason to always check. After the MAC I walked over to the Starbucks at D&W and got a coffee and read the DFP and WSJ.

The DFP this morning exploded with several articles on a Federal indictment of the ex-mayor, his father and several buddies and contractors. Kilpatrick, father and son, milked the city for millions. The DFP had a field day with several articles on the grand jury deliberations and the strength of the Fed's case. It looks pretty convincing that father and son will do some hard time. They did not indict the ex-mayor's mother, Representative Kilpatrick.

The WSJ had an article on rare earth minerals. These minerals are needed for most green energy propulsion units. China has 95% of the known reserves. The USA did have a Ca mine but it was closed because of China selling the minerals at a cheap price. Now it appears that China will limit export or charge a premium. Folks are worried so they hope to get the CA mine reopened. It usually takes 7 years to go through the permitting process. All the goo-goo mush heads try and delay any mine. However, it looks that there is enough pressure that the mine will open sooner.

My walk home from D&W was very pleasant. The sun was out and temperature had risen about 15⁰. After a quick lunch I headed upstairs to my office and will remain here until Nancy and I drive to Russo's to purchase some bargain basement wine. After Russo's we will have dinner at Great Lakes Shipping.

We purchased our wine and had an enjoyable dinner at GLS. We both had the prime rib sandwich. I had a Blue Moon and Nancy had a glass of wine. We watched a little TV and headed upstairs at 2100.

Wednesday December 15, 2010

Ms P and I headed outside at 0430. On these cold mornings she continues to set speed records. The alarm went off at 0545. This is breakfast club morning. I left at 0630 and it was very cold and pitch black. This morning the speaker was the head of Calvin College's January series. The January series brings noted speakers to Calvin to talk about their area of expertise. They bring in 15 speakers. The lectures are free.

After breakfast club I head home and pick up Ms P and head for the bank, post office and Kava House for a quick coffee. I started writing Christmas cards and got two done before Nancy came home. At 1030 Nancy and I got in the Taurus and headed for Stanton, Michigan. We are attending a surprise retirement party for my friend, Tom Mayan. The party was well attended and I got to see folks from Montcalm, Gratiot and Clinton County. Tom's wife, Dorothy and two sons also attended. The lunch included: Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, rolls, and several great desserts. Tom was surprised. It was a very successful lunch.

I was yawning on my way home so Nancy suggested that I take a nap. I always follow Nancy's advice so I took a nap. After the nap I took a 30 minute walk. Walking was kinda tough because the sidewalks were all icy. The forecast said we will have below normal temps for the next week. I don't mind the temps but the slippery walks is another story.

We had a light dinner and I read the GRP. At 1930 I came upstairs and finished my Christmas cards. Yes folks Bob writes Christmas cards. It is now 2030 and I will head downstairs and take Ms P out and maybe watch some TV.

Tuesday December 14, 2010

Ms P is getting use to these cold mornings. She is in and out in 30 seconds. We should rename her speed P. This morning I walked to the MAC and when I finished I walked to Breton Village's Starbucks for coffee and to read this morning's papers. It was a beautiful winter's day. Plenty of sunshine and no wind made walking easy.

Nancy attended a lunch today with a vendor. When she got home we headed to the Apple Store in Woodland Mall. A nice young man attempted to show us how to load Nancy's address book into the itouch. When we got home we tried his method to no avail. We finally called the Apple service center and we were walked through the procedure for getting the address book on the itouch. It worked. Now Nancy can sit by the side of the pool in Hawaii and email all her friends in cold MI.

The DFP has periodically written stories about the proposed new Detroit River crossing. This bridge would be located several miles downstream from the existing Ambassador Bridge which is privately owned. The present Gov is for the new bridge but the new Gov has not really committed. An interesting lawsuit is making it through the courts regarding the newly built ramps to the Ambassador Bridge. MDOT wants the ramp torn down but the owner say forget it. Stay tuned.

I think the newspapers are taking a holiday breather. They appear very mellow. I attribute it to the season.

I keep thinking about writing Christmas cards but so far I have not written one. Maybe tomorrow! After dinner we watched the news, read the GRP and finished the evening watching NCIS. We headed upstairs at 2100.

Monday December 13, 2010

As soon as I opened the door at 0500 I knew that today is going to be the coldest day of the year. Ms P also knew because she only walked about 10 steps and then headed back to the door. Nancy and I had to shovel the drive and walk. Luckily the snow was light and fluffy. After shoveling I put on several layers and started walking to the MAC. I had the wind at my back so the wind chill did not bother me. However, I had too many layers on so I was sweating 1.5 miles into the 2.5 mile walk. I have to figure out how to dress on these cold mornings.

I rowed 5K this morning. This is the first time since June 17 that I have tried this distance. I had no pain. I think I will be back to normal by the middle of January. Instead of walking to the Kava House I had my morning coffee at Starbuck in the Breton Village D&W. After coffee I walked home. By taking coffee at the Breton Village I get home 35 minutes sooner than going to the Kava House. Walking is very time consuming.

Nancy attended a luncheon in Rockford this noon. I ate a quick lunch and then headed upstairs to the office. About 1600 I took a break and walked to the post office to mail Nancy's Christmas cards. The wind had died down so the walk was enjoyable. In fact it was a beautiful winter's day. The sun was out all day. Sunshine makes a day enjoyable.

I just talked to Debbie. She said she was swamped with work. It appears Apple makes money by overworking their employees. Debbie did say that she bought a new Apple laptop. She has not taken it out of the box.

Today is meatless Monday so I had cereal for dinner. Missy skyped us tonight. Skyping is a good way to stay in touch. We watched Hardball and House and at 2100 headed to bed. I did take Ms P out before coming upstairs. She does not dilly-dally on these cold nights.

Sunday, December 12, 2010

Sunday December 12, 2010

Ms P overslept this morning. When I got up with her I thought it was 0500. It was really 0600. Ms P did not stay out very long because it was snowing. Nancy and I went out about 0700 and shoveled the drive and walk. It was a heavy, wet snow, sometimes called a cardiac snow. We both swam 45 minutes this morning. For the first time in 6 months I was able to do the crawl. I did several laps with little pain.

We did not go to Meijer's this morning. I did let Nancy off and headed to the Kava House to get us each a coffee. I also filled the Taurus. Gas was $2.90 per gallon.

Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I had three eggs because they were large and not jumbo. After reading the funnies I headed upstairs to take my Sunday nap. After the nap I took Ms P on a walk around the block.

The weather is getting worse. The temperature at 0700 was 32⁰ and at 1700 it is 20⁰. It is also snowing hard. However, the weather did not stop me from taking a 3.5 mile walk.

Nancy is fixing a crab salad for dinner tonight. We will watch 60 minutes, read the GRP and probably head for bed about 2100.

I just checked the long term average mean temperature for December 12. It is 29⁰. From January 11 to January 31 the average mean temperature is flat lined at 22⁰. This is the coldest time of the year.

We have 9H04' of daylight today. The sun did not come out so it is real gloomy. That is why it is so important to get outside 30' on these gloomy days. I got my 30 in did you?

Saturday December 11, 2010

When Ms P and I went out at 0500 the temperature was above freezing. Since the temperature was above freezing I decided to ride my bike to Bill's. The economy must be improving because when I left Bill's every booth was filled. On my way home I pedaled to Gaslight Village to use the ATM at 53rd.

The birds are now starting to use our feeder so this morning I had to fill it up. We are expecting a big storm this evening. I hope to get my walk in before it starts snowing and blowing.

The big news in today's DFP was about the "Big Chill" hockey game at the "Big House". They hope to have over 100,000 at today's game despite the prediction of bad weather. Speaking of hockey it is nice to see the Original Six still having games. The Red Wings and Canadians just finished a home and home series.

The WSJ had an article about what Madoff's family and other folks involved with Bernie the Crook. I read the entire story and found it very interesting. When I got home I called up the "Daily Beast" on my computer and saw a story about Madoff's son just hanging himself. Missy also sent me some links on this story. Missy also sent us two Christmas card type photos of AJ. They were very cute.

Veronica just called and gave us an update on the Scott Team. Later Lucas called and talked with his grandparents. I finished our annual giving campaign and then walked to the post office to mail the checks.

I did watch part of the "Big Chill" game. It was fun to see over 100,000 folks watching a college hockey game. Around 1700 Nancy and I headed upstairs to get ready to go to the Namey's for dinner.

The dinner party was great. There were 8 people at the party. Mary had a pasta bar. We also had salad and a great dessert. Like most old folks parties we drank some and talked more. The party broke up at 2130. It was raining when we headed home.

Saturday, December 11, 2010

Friday December 10, 2010

About 0230 Ms P started barking and she headed downstairs. I also thought I heard a noise so I headed downstairs to check. I looked out the window and saw a snow plow working on the drive across the street. When Ms P and I went out at 0500 we had about 1 inch of snow on the ground. When I went back to bed I set the alarm for 0645. Nancy and I got up with the alarm and headed outside to shovel. The snow was light so we finished in good time.

I did not want to ride my bike in the snow so I walked to the MAC. After my MAC routine in walked to the Kava House. Today my walk/run total equaled 8 miles. I did not get home until 1315. I had a quick lunch and then headed downtown to pick up a new pair of glasses. I checked my email and found that I had a message from my friend Tom Mayan in Merrill. Tom's grandson made All State as a wide receiver for the Merrill Vandals. Tom enclosed a You Tube clip showing his grandson in action. He is a good football player.

I took a short nap and now Nancy and I must decide where we are going for dinner. I am going to vote for Olga's Kitchen. I lost we went to Panera Bread. After dinner we stopped at ABC Warehouse, PetSmart and Macy's. We got home about 1930. We watched TV until 2100 and then went to bed.

Friday, December 10, 2010

Thursday December 9, 2010

Boy it was cold when Ms P and I went out at 0500. The radio said it was 14⁰. I went back to bed to get warm and catch a few more Zs. I woke up for good at 0700. I really bundled up for my bike ride to the MAC. However, with only a mild wind, I did not get cold. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House for my morning coffee and paper. Actually my papers are on my Kindle. I think my morning ritual at the Kava House is something like the routine my grandfather Hughes followed. Every morning grandfather would go to the barber shop and get a shave.

After a quick lunch I took a nap. Nancy had a luncheon to go to today. After my nap I put some Christmas lights out and then took Ms P on a walk around the block. I dropped Ms P off and then took a two mile walk.
My sister sent her Christmas package today. Included in the package was some peanut brittle that Don Crandall had made. I had some and it was very good. Is there bad peanut brittle?

Tonight Nancy and I are going to Great Lakes Shipping for dinner. GLS was crowded tonight with a lot of Christmas Parties. After dinner we watched a little TV, read the GRP and at 2100 headed to bed.

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Wednesday December 8, 2010

Ms P and I followed our normal early morning routine and then back to bed. The next thing I remember is Nancy giving me a kiss as she was heading out the door. It was almost 0730. Today is my easy day so I got on the retro and pedaled to Bill's for breakfast. I had their "Super Special". Today was another cold day with the temperature in the 20s all day. After eating and reading the DFP and WSJ I got on the retro and pedaled to the 53rd bank in Gaslight Village. When I got home I headed upstairs so I would be out of Kim's way. Kim is cleaning the house.

Steve called this morning and we talked. He has some vacation days to use so he was home with two sick kids. I guess the kids are getting over their colds. I asked Steve if he had his tickets to the Rose Bowl. He said not yet.
I finished writing checks and then got in the C2 and headed to the MAC. I swam 30 minutes today.

This afternoon I have a 1400 GRBA meeting. On my way to the meeting I stop at the Lake Drive post office to mail our checks. Today's GRBA meeting is being held at 1120 Monroe. This building was recently rehabilitated. It was purchased by the city and now houses several community services offices on the third floor. The city has rented out the second and first floors. We got a tour of the building.

After the meeting I stopped by the office to give our contribution to the "Adopt a Family" fund. I got the opportunity to talk to the guys and gals. The crew was decorating a Christmas tree. Everyone was in good spirits. One thing I miss about retirement is the interaction with bright young folks. I am sure production rapidly improved once I left. It is great to see that everyone is busy.

Today Nancy's Book Club is having their Christmas party. Spouses are invited. We arrived at Judith's condo at 1800. There were 11 folks at the party. The food and drinks were great. Like most small parties the men and women separated into groups and discussed the issues of the day. No issues were resolved. We got home at 2130 and headed upstairs to bed. It was another nice day.

Tuesday December 7, 2010

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. I was 3 1/2 years old. This attack had a profound impact on the lives of every adult in the USA. Food, gas and other materials critical to the war effort were rationed. Nearly every male under the age of 30 was forced into the military service. The war was the major topic of adult conversation. My dad was drafted into the service as a civilian to work on the design, construction and maintenance of military bases in the Chicago area. He lived in Chicago about two years. The only reason dad was released from service was because the city manager of Alpena was drafted and dad replaced him. I think dad made about $4,000 per year.
We could not travel because gas was rationed. I remember my mother and her friends obtained some tobacco and a machine to roll cigarettes. They had a cigarette making bee. Cigarettes were rationed. Silk stockings were not available to women because silk was needed to make parachutes. Tires were made of rubber and because the Japanese had captured all the SE Asia rubber plantations, tires were not available.

Farmer's were given as much gas as they needed because we needed all the food that could be grown to feed the troops. Once we were visiting the farm and my grandfather offered my dad some gas for his car. This was illegal but we needed the gas to get back to Alpena. Doctor's were also given as much gas as needed because they made house calls (yes folks house calls). Ministers were also not subject to rationing. They had to minister to their flock.

Little Bobby Scott did not really suffer during the war. I remember I could only put 1 teaspoon of sugar on my oatmeal. I remember in school we collected paper for the war effort. If you collected a set amount of paper you were give a patch labeling you as a "Paper Trooper". Paper Troopers were cool. My friends and I played guns and the smallest kids had to be the Nazi or Jap.

Older men were members of the civil patrol. One of their duties was to stand patrol on top the city hall cupola. They were watching for German bombers. Women would have bees to make things for the troops. Every citizen was involved.

December 7, 2010: Ms P and I went out at 0450. I got up for real at 0710. I rode the retro to the MAC. After the MAC I rode to the Kava House. I got cold because the wind chill was in the teens. I am now getting warm because I have heater going full blast.

This afternoon I am writing checks. This is a job I don't mind because we are sending checks to local charities. At 1700 Nancy and I got in the Taurus and drove to Meijer's Garden to see the outside Christmas light display. It was very impressive. I think the Garden is a major community asset. After the Gardens Nancy cooked me a hamburger and some tomato soup. We read the GRP and watched NCIS. We headed to bed at 2100. I have a GRBA meeting tomorrow so I took some time to read tomorrows agenda.

Monday, December 6, 2010

Monday December 6, 2010

Last night the TV was full of Lake Effect snow warnings. The lake effect snow did not reach GR because when Ms P and I went out at 0500 the drive was bone dry. I got up for good at 0655 and dressed in layers because the temperature is going to be in the 20s all day. I got out the retro and pedaled to the MAC. I dressed properly because I did not notice the cold. After the MAC I headed to the Kava House. I only read the DFP because I have several errands to run this afternoon.

I had a quick lunch and then loaded up the Christmas packages that are going to CA. I was surprised that the post office was empty. Normally you have to wait in line this time of year. After the post office I headed to the Ford dealer to get the Taurus serviced. The Ford dealer was not busy. I just got settled in to read the WSJ when they told me the car was finished. Bummer!

I stopped at the Kentwood bike shop to get some valve caps and check out speedometers. I also stopped at Gander Mountain to see if they had any warm underwear tops. They did not have anything that I would buy.

When I got home I hooked the wreath to Opa's wreath holder. It works slick. Ms P and I took a walk around the block. It is 0.4 miles around the block. I also took a 1.95 mile walk. I wore my gps and I am happy to announce that my average time was 15'53" per mile. This is a pb and I am now setting a goal of 15'.

Tonight was cereal night. After dinner we watched the news and a rerun CSI on cable. We headed to bed at 2100.

Useless weather information. Hours of daylight GR = 9h09'; Moscow, Russia = 7h14'. I got my 30 in, did you?

Sunday December 5, 2010

Sunday morning and I woke up at 0500 and Ms P and I preformed our chores and went back to bed. The alarm went off at 0645. We headed to the MAC for our swim. Nancy and I both swam 45 minutes. I am really liking the progress my shoulder has made since I started swimming. On Friday I did 15 pushups.

At Meijer's I filled the Taurus up. Gas was $3.01 per gallon. When we got home I got out the step ladder and got down a wreath holder that was made by Opa. I also took my At bike down the basement. Nancy fixed her world famous poached eggs for breakfast. I read several sections of the paper and then took a nap.

After the nap I took the lights off the AT and put them on the retro. I think I will use the retro during winter months. It is smaller and easier to handle. Also the wide tires only carry 40pi which makes driving in snow easier.

I capped off the afternoon by going on a 3.25 mile walk. I wore my gps and made an effort to walk fast. My average time was 16'45" per mile. This is my fastest walking time. I have a ways to go because Debbie can walk at a less than 14' pace.

For dinner Nancy made a crab salad. It was great. We also had tomato soup. I watched 60 minutes and finished the GRP. At 2030 we headed to bed. It is now 2117 and I will take Ms P out and then head to bed.

Sunday, December 5, 2010

Saturday December 4, 2010

I got up at 0500 and performed my early morning routine. I set the alarm for 0630 because Nancy has a early morning class at the MAC. This being Saturday I headed to Bill's for breakfast. The roads are still not clear so I walked. It is about 2.3 miles to Bill's. I had their special and read both the DFP and WSJ.

After Breakfast I walked Ms P around the block. After our walk we got in the C2 and headed to Meijer's so I could pick up a prescription. The Kzoo/28st Meijer's, known as the 3rd world Meijer's, was jammed. When I got home I dropped Ms P off and then made a deposit at the bank and stopped by the Kava House to get Nancy a coffee.

I spent the afternoon in the office, reading catalogs and deciding what donations to make to various non profits this year. I tried to order some warm River Driver shirts from LL Bean but they were totally out.

I spent hours last winter putting the family tree on a piece of software called My Heritage. I found out after completing most of the work that the software company is located in London, England. I hope to spend some time this winter polishing the family tree. I want to put photographs of family members in the document. I found an email address and asked for a phone number so I can talk to a real person. Old folks need to have their computer questions answered by real people.

I really like my Apple itouch. I now have itunes on my computer and the nicest feature is the shuffle. I have 700 tunes and the shuffle really does mix up the tunes. I am now listening to a Irish folk tune. Previously I listened to Merl Haggard, Burl Ives, Glen Miller and Pete Fountain. Electronic toys are great.

It is now 1600 and I am getting restless. I will take a break and get in a 2.25 mile walk. After the walk Nancy and I headed to Russ's for dinner. The place was crowded. The median age was 76. We watched a little TV and then at 2100 headed to bed.

Friday December 3, 2010

I had too many fancy desserts last night. I did not sleep too well. I got up at 0530 to take Ms P out and found out that Nancy had already taken her out. I had my fiber drink and pill and went back to bed. I finally got up at 0718. It did not snow last night but the street were not clear so instead of riding my bike I walked to the MAC. After the MAC I walked to the Kava House. I got home about 1300.

I had an apple and then Nancy and I headed to Costco. At Costco we sampled their goodies and purchased some supplies. I bought a pair of lined pants, some contact lens supplies, Listerine and a case of Bell's Winter White Ale. I also purchased a hot dog. On our way home we stopped by the LMCU so Nancy could get some cash. Since I walked/ran 8.5 miles today I thought I deserved a nap. I took a short nap and then played on the computer until it was time to go to the OHNA TGIF.

The TGIF was well attended. I had the opportunity to talk to a lot of neighbors. Did you know that Wally Pipp lived on Giddings? Do you know who Wally Pipp was?

The gentlemen who own the home where the TGIF was held have beautiful wood floors. They said as soon as they bought the home they removed the carpeting. I asked if they sanded and finished the wood themselves. They said no, a contractor was hired. In fact the consensus of other folks who were listening was always hire a professional. I will tell Missy this advice. Missy removed her carpets and the wood floor looks great but they still need to be sanded and finished.

I think yesterday was the first time this winter season that the temperature stayed below freezing all day. I am quickly getting into my winter mode.

Thursday December 2, 2010

When Ms P and I got up at 0500 I shoveled the steep part of the hill. When I went back to bed I set the alarm for 0646 because I have a 1020 Doctor appointment. I got up with the alarm and Nancy and I finished shoveling. I drove to the MAC and did my full routine. After the MAC I drove to the Doctor's office. Today I am visiting my ear doctor. He cleaned my left ear and gave me a prescription for some drops that should prevent the skin in my ear from drying out and scaling.

I stopped by the Kava House and read the DFP and WSJ. The DFP this morning was almost giddy with optimism for the Detroit area. Employment is up and car sales are booming. However, the big question among my friends is what will the UM AD do about Rich Rod.

I had a quick lunch and then shoveled the walk and delivered a check from the OHNA to the newsletter publisher. I also took a 1.5 mile walk. Nancy was briefing the new OHNA treasurer when I got home. I took Ms P up stairs and we took a nap together. I spent several hours in my office checking my finances. It is now 1743 and in 30 minutes Nancy and I must get ready to go to a function at the Gardens.

The gala at the Gardens was great. The invitation said black tie optional but the majority of men were in suits. For food we had a choice of Asian, Greek, Mexican and traditional. Drinks were free and I drank several Bell's Winter White Ale. I really like this beer. Nancy and I walked around and looked at all Christmas displays from around the world. They Gardens had all their trees decorated with fancy lights. It was a fun evening.

Wednesday December 1, 2010

December came in with a bang. It snowed most of the night. The grass was covered with snow but at 0630 as I headed for Breakfast Club the snow was not sticking on the concrete. This morning we had a member talk about his wood working hobby. He showed some samples of his work. He uses exotic wood pieces and glues them together into interesting mosaics. He cuts, sands, glues and polishes the wood in his basement shop. The speaker was 87 years old and still travels, skis, plays in a band and of course works in his shop. At age 18 he was a Navy corpsman assigned to the Marines in the Pacific campaign. He was involved in all of the Marines operations in the south Pacific.

After breakfast I drove by the Farmer's Market to buy a Christmas wreath. The market was closed. I did stop by the Kava House so I could read the WSJ and DFP. When I got home the concrete was covered with about 2 inches of snow. I got out the shovel and performed my first snow shovel of the season.

It was too dangerous to bike to the MAC so I walked. I swam 45 minutes. I had a quick lunch and then retired to the office to check my email and go through my mail. I had the heater on and Ms P slept in front of the heater. Nancy worked at the Gardens this afternoon. When she got home I took out my two suits and asked which one she thought would be appropriate for the Gala at the Gardens tomorrow. Since we decided on my gray suit I polished my black shoes. At 1730 I took Ms P out and shoveled the drive and walk.

Nancy had to work at the Gardens tonight so I fixed a pb&j with a onion slice for dinner. Actually I fixed two. I also had a Bell's Winter Ale. I like Bell's beer.

I watched the news and read the GRP. When Nancy got home we watched Undercover at 2000 on NBC. It was bad. I can see why NBC has such low ratings. At 2040 we headed upstairs.

I remember another December 1 where the weather was very warm. In 1964 I had just gotten out of the Navy and working for Scott Engineering in Alpena. We had an emergency bridge job in Big Rapids. A milk truck had brought down the old bridge and we were hired to get the bridge open to traffic as soon as possible. The project started December 1 and it was 70⁰. Bill Cruise and I were setting out control points and I remember thinking this won't be so bad. The next day the temperature plummeted and we had a very cold winter. I never got warm all winter.

Tuesday November 30, 2010

It was warm and rainy this morning. I did not dress in layers but I did put on my rain pants for my ride to the MAC. This time of year I pedal to the MAC and take my afternoon walk in the dark. Despite the rain pants I got wet on my ride. It was still raining when I left the MAC for my ride to the Kava House. The weatherman said as the morning progressed we would encounter high winds and a major temperature drop. He was right.

After a quick lunch I got in the C2 and headed to the eye doctor. He gave me a thorough check up and changed my prescription. I complained that my 30 day contacts are great for the first 15 days and then they appear to lose some power. He said that despite my cleaning they were still getting a protein buildup. He gave me some drops to add to the cleaning solution that should solve my problem.

After the eye doctor I delivered a walker to Linda Moleski. She has a friend who needs a walker. Nancy was happy to let Linda use ours. I also stopped at Meijer's to get some beer and a bottle of the eye doctor's magic solution. I capped off the afternoon with a 2.25 mile walk. As I said earlier in the dark.

Tonight is left over night. I get to finish pizza and the beans and rice from last weekend. Nancy said that NCIS might not be on because of a Christmas special. Bummer!

You know you are getting old when you hide your financial papers before going away for a few days and then can't remember where you hide them. Another bummer! Good news after about 90 minutes of searching I found the papers. I picked a good hiding place.
